Hi all.

I have been wondering something for some time now. What is the best (?) oil
to use in my Discovery? The local dealer only uses Mobil 1 synthetic which
would seem to be a bit on the poor side - it doesn't meet (on the packs I
have seen) the cg-4 rating.

What is a good alternative ?

I didn't realise your Land Rover is an 88. Yes, the lightweight's an 88,
but I don't know if the canopy is the same as a standard 88, and there are
no 88 softtops round here I can compare it with (and I think no
lightweights in RSA you could compare with, or at least they're a rarity).
Should be the same, but... (O ye of little faith!) Paul, I'll send this
reply to the lro list rather than za-lro in the hopes of finding an answer.
I'd also like to know if anyone has plans for a bikini top (just for the
cab).

No, the LightWeight and civilian 88 ragtops are different size. The
civilian rear tub is wider.

Tom is right, its only a little difference (1 inch or so) but it is
significant.
I have learned it the hard way, my civilian soft top cannot fitted tight
enough because it is to big

Hope this helps

Subject: 88 Diesel front pipe question

I have a IIa diesel that has the downspout type exit on the exhaust
manifold. I've only ever worked on ones that had the side outlet, so I've a
question about this one. Is the front pipe for this the same as the IIa/III
88 petrol front pipe? It *does* take a front pipe with the bell shaped
joint, but I can't quite tell if it's the same otherwise. I had the
Clifford Research headers on the petrol I took out, so I can't match it to
anything to see if they're the same.
Thanks.

The series 2A clutch mechanism is generally superior to the series 3, the
release mechanism has an oil lubricated bearing which is much more
substantial to the ser 3 plastic housing "thing"
For a short time in the early seventies Rover fitted synchro boxes to the
last of the series 2A's with the 2A clutch mechanism
The only advantage of the series 3 is it is easier to seal the clutch
housing for deep water running.

Subject: Pedal height

I should have noticed this in the shop manual before and saved myself a lot
of frustration.

Over the past several months I've been perplexed why a near complete
replacement of the braking system hadn't made any difference in pedal
effectiveness. My foot would go halfway to the floor before there seemed to
be any braking activity. This despite new drums, linings, etc etc and
despite over agressive brake adjustment in a last futile and possibly
damaging attempt to improve the pedal.

Well today on re-reading the relevant sections of the Shop Manual I
discovered what I should have seen before, that there is a pedal-stop
adjustment on the front of the m/c case and a recommendation to adjust the
unpressed pedal height to 6 and a quarter inches. Mine seemed to be about
that height but I gave the adjusting screw two complete turns anyhow and
while the measurement barely changed I suddenly found myself with decent
pedal travel. There's a further adjustment inside the m/c box I have to
double check now to make sure that it's within specs but for the first time
I feel like I'm sitting behind properly set up brakes.

It's a nice feeling.

I've been away for a while and I just caught the tail end of the recent leaf
spring thread. Well, needless to say this got my bone-dry gears a-turnin.
Since this year's archives aren't up and running, I'll risk being
redundant... I wanted to see if anyone out "there" is running parabolic
springs (or know stories about folks who are)? Mine are in need of
retirement and I want to check out all the options.

Hiya

Well, my LRs finally going. Today i did the electrics and all the extras,
like bolting it back together. I spent a fun hour choosing different wires
in combinations to get the lights to do what the switches said they should.
The colour coding was dull and faded, so preety useless. Once all that was
sorted I also had to sort out the little problem of the Carb. I used to
have a Zenith, but changed to a Solex as it was attatched to the manifold
on the new engine. But there was a problem, as when we started it, the
engine went to full revs!

We quickly discovered the controls were reversed and found a link arm to
correct it. However, after all this we found we would have to put the
Zenith Carb back as the air filters' hose wasnt big enough and we didnt
have anthing to help it!

Anyway. Managed to get home ok. Its nice to have the green lump on the
drive again. Ive just got to clear all the "junk" out the back and sort it
out. SOON I will have it going properly.... I need another spring for the
accelerator, so it would goto idle when you take your foot off the pedal...

Also. I managed to fix the handbrake. I turned the knob at the end of the
stick and lo and behold, it now works! Thanks for all the help. Just gotta
get it ship shape now!!!

Dear Tom -

I am not sure, but I think that the petrol differs from the diesel in
some way - just be sure to specify the model/motor type when you order -
like "for a LR 88" SIII 1976 diesel with downwards facinmg manifold
outlet"

I will check on a petrol LR and compare it with my SIII's

Thanks Tom, that saves some trouble, and makes sense: I think they designed
the lightweights to fit two abreast into a C130. Mine used to have a top,
but the previous owner "didn't like it" so he chucked it in his garden
under a tree, which ate it. The rainy season's just starting... I know
where I can get a used one, but the guy wants US$700 for it. I'd rather get
wet (very wet, probably).

Has anyone tried this product called Broquet fuel catalyst? Supposed to
enhance petrol and diesels by adding a few Hp and torque, as well as
reducing emissions. Even claims to be a fuel stabiliser (engine starts up
immediately even when using old fuel) and is a replacement for
lead/hardened seats.

Claims like this seem too good to be true... especially with the recent
thread on unleaded heads, but the sceptic in me tells me otherwise. Anyone
with experience? Pray tell.

Peter:

You might want to try pulling out the middle seat and plate exposing
the OD/tranny and take a drive. My '72 88" does something similar
and it seems to be the rear drive shaft slapping back and forth as if
the driving force from the rollong rear wheels is momentarily
restricted by the tranny brake or something up front and once this
resistance is overcome it 'whips' around until the next restriction.
This appears to take place within the slop along the rear drive train
aft of the tranny brake. I haven't checked the U-joints and will not
be able to for some time but I suspect that may be a major player.

Let me Know what you find.
