Hello everyone. I sent in my $20 for membership to said organisation well
over a month ago and as yet have not received anything to confirm that I am
a member in good standing. Anyone know how long it takes LROA, NA to
process membership dues, etc. Is this normal or did something get lost in
the mail (from either my end or theirs)? Or have the dues increased or has
the address changed since I acquired my flyer a couple of years ago? I'm
not upset with them, just curious. Thanks. Brian

The 1997 Darwin Award competition.

These awards are given each year to bestow upon (the remains of) that
individual, who through single-minded self-sacrifice, has done the most to
remove undesirable elements from the human gene pool. Note there was great
improvement in the areas of teamwork and cooperation among the candidates in
1997-- it's no longer an individual sport. Here are (drum roll) the 1997
runners-up and winners:

5th runner-up:

A San Anselmo, California man died when he hit a lift tower at the Mammoth
Mountain ski area while riding down the slope on a foam pad.

22-year old David Hubal was pronounced dead at Centinela Mammoth Hospital.
The accident occurred about 3 a.m., The Mono County Sheriff's Department said.
Hubal and his friends apparently had hiked up a ski run called Stump Alley
and undid some yellow foam protectors from lift towers, said Lt. Mike Donnelly
of the Mammoth Lakes Police Department.

The pads are used to protect skiers who might hit towers. The group
apparently used the pads to slide down the ski slope and Hubal crashed into a
tower. It
has since been investigated and determined the tower he hit was the one with
its pad removed.

4th Runner-up:
Robert Puelo, 32, was apparently being disorderly in a St. Louis market.
When the clerk threatened to call the police. Puelo grabbed a hot dog, shoved
it
into his mouth and walked out without paying. Police found him unconscious
in front of the store-paramedics removed the six-inch wiener from his throat
where it had choked him to death.

3rd Runner-up:
To poacher Marino Malerba of Spain, who shot a stag standing above him on an
overhanging rock and was killed instantly when it fell on him.

2nd Runner-up:
Man loses face at party. A man at a West Virginia party (probably related to
the man in Arkansas who used the 22 bullet to replace the fuse in his
pick-up truck) popped a blasting cap into his mouth and bit down, triggering
an
explosion that blew off his lips, teeth, and tongue. Jerry Stromyer, 24, of
Kincaid, bit the blasting cap as a prank during the party late Tuesday
night, said Cpl. M.D. Payne. "Another man had it in an aquarium hooked to a
battery
and was trying to explode it", said Payne. "It wouldn't go off and this guy
said I'll show you how to set it off". "He put it into his mouth and bit
down. It blew all his teeth out and his lips and tongue off", Payne said.
Stromyer
was listed in guarded condition Wednesday with extensive facial injuries,
according to a spokesperson at Charleston Area Medical
Division. "I just can't imagine anyone doing something like that", Payne
said.

1st Runner-up:
Doctors at Portland University Hospital said an Oregon man shot through
the skull by a hunting arrow is lucky to be alive and will be released soon
from the hospital. Tony Roberts, 25, lost his right eye last weekend during
an initiation into a man's rafting club, Mountain Men Anonymous (probably
known
now as Stupid Mountain Men Anonymous) in Grants Pass, Oregon.

A friend tried to shoot a beer can off his head, but the arrow entered
Robert's right eye. Doctors said had the arrow gone 1 millimeter to the left,
a major
blood vessel would have been cut and Roberts would have died instantly.
Neurosurgeon Doctor Johnny Delashaw at the University Hospital in Portland
said the arrow went through 8 to 10 inches of brain
with the tip protruding at the rear of his skull, yet somehow managed to
miss all major blood vessels. Delashaw also said had Roberts tried to pull the
arrow out on his own he surely would have killed himself. Roberts admitted
afterwards he and his friends had been drinking that afternoon.

Said Roberts, "I feel so dumb about this". No charges have been filed, but
the Josephine County district attorney's office said the initiation stunt is
under investigation.

Last year's winner, you will remember, was the fellow who was killed when he
attached a JATO (Jet Assisted Take Off) unit to his Chevy Impala and shot
himself and his car into a desert cliff at 300 M.P.H.

Now this year's winners:
(The late) John Pernicky and his friend, (the late) Sal Hawkins, of the
great state of Washington, decided to attend a local Metallica concert at the
Gorge, Washington amphitheater. Having no tickets (but having had 18 beers
between
them), they thought it would be easy to "hop" over the nine-foot fence and
sneak into the show.

They pulled their pick-up truck over to the fence and the plan was for (the
late) Mr. Pernicky (who was 100-pounds heavier than Mr. Hawkins) to hop the
fence and then assist his friend over. Unfortunately for (the late) Mr.
Pernicky, there was a 30-foot drop on the other side of the fence. Having
heaved himself over, he found himself crashing through a tree. His fall was
abruptly halted (and broken, along with his arm, as it were) by a large
branch that snagged him by his shorts. Dangling from the tree with a broken
arm, he
looked down and saw some bushes below him.

(Possibly) figuring the bushes would break his fall, he removed his
pocketknife and proceeded to cut away his shorts to free himself from the
tree. Finally
free, (did I mention he is THE LATE) Mr. Pernicky crashed into Holly bushes.
The sharp leaves scratched his ENTIRE body and now without the protection of
his shorts, a Holly branch penetrated his rectal cavity. To make matters
worse (?!), on landing, his pocketknife penetrated his thigh 3-inches.

(The late) Mr. Hawkins, on seeing his friend in considerable pain and agony,
decided to throw him a rope and pull him to safety (now he thinks of the "S"
word) by tying the rope to the pick-up truck and slowly driving away.
However, in his drunken haste/state, he put the truck into reverse and crashed
through the fence landing on his friend and killing him. Police arrived to
find the
crashed pick-up with its driver thrown 100-feet from the truck and dead at
the scene from massive internal injuries. Upon moving the truck, they found
John
under it, half-naked with scratches on his body, a holly stick in his
rectum, a knife in his thigh, and his shorts dangling from a tree branch
25-feet in
the air.

Congratulations gentlemen, you win... Remember, safety first... Remember THE
safety question: "WHAT'S THE WORST THAT CAN HAPPEN IF I DO THIS?"

Well, as I see it, the DorkTari is a year long trek towards a

Hi Dave,
I think that Clinton issued a prisidential order to that effect so that
no stuff could be brought in back after the federal building bombing. I
heard that part of the order ment ammo boxes were to be crushed no
resold. I think the government thinks all of the EX-MOD marerials could
be use by the civilians to over through the government.. Some
underground group have been formed using some of this stuff in any
event. The government stopped china from importing automatic assult
rifles in CA. for sale to street gangs for example.
Personally I only want a stage one 109 regular for my own use. any
suggestions?

The last Aluminium Workhorse, to my knowledge, was produced
May/June 1997. Though it is supposed to be a quarterly publication, there
seems to be some gaps in its production schedule. My records show the
following - 3 issues in 1992, 4 issues in 1993, 4 in 1994, 2 in 1995, 2
issue in 1996, 1 issue in 1997.
It depends what you expect out of an organisation. If it is a
regular newsletter you would like to receive, there are some clubs that
have an excellent record in producing newsletters on time (ie Bay State
(missed two bimonthly issues since establishement in 1990), Ottawa Valley
(never missed a monthly issue since establishemnt in 1984), Rover Owners
of Virginia (To my knowledge not only never missed a quarterly issue, but
has produced extra issues during the year since 1974 (Way to go Sandy!)),
R.O.V.E.R.S (never missed any bimonthly issues since it was established in
1995. There are newer clubs that have not missed anything yet, & don't
know of some of the other long term clubs)
If you are looking for events, well that is a whole different
subject...

If I remember my list history correctly, your declared challenger
is an ex-Taxachussets type too. In fact from the Boston area. Now,
whether or not he is bitter at being exiled from your lovely climate to

PS. If colour mattered, Jim Pappas would have won for having a pink Land

you can get by using it.

Subject: Re: Transmission Problems

Hi all - there might be more going on here!

This is getting worse, I think. I was backing down a hill in reverse,
it popped out of gear, but when I looked at the lever, it was in
reverse all the way. I put it into neutral (I think I had trouble the first
try like I've described previously) and then went forward a bit, and then
tried to go in reverse again. No Reverse! I went through some other gears and
tried again, it was back, and I could back up again.

When I lost reverse, there weren't any nasty sounds - maybe some minor
grinding - but it wasn't like trying to downshift into second and missing the
rpms.

Is this just another of the minor annoyances that come w/ a rover, or is my
gearbox on it's way out?

Often I read about how much of a pain a gearbox rebuild is - why is that so?
Does it entail a lot of micrometer work? Are the shafts and gears hard to
remove? Do you need a hydrolic press?

So - Is there anybody in the US/Canada who has purchased a new/rebuilt Series
IIA gearbox from England, and had it shipped here? I'd like to know the
details of having such a large item shipped - if anybody knows.

What company in England has a good reputation for this sort of thing?

Subject: Unusual timing question

Hi all,

I was going to replace points condensor and rotor today (it's been 2 years)
and thought I'd check the timing too. I have a timing mark on the front cover
but when I started to examine the crank pulley, I found out it has no marks on
it. As I have mentioned before, even though the Brick is a 67 IIa, the
engine/transmission is SII.

It does have the flywheel housing cover plate, but I have a few practical
questions before I get started.

Are the timing marks on the flywheel generally viewed through the large
plugged hole in the cowling cover? (Right side)

I am afraid the flywheel may have been replaced and might not have timing
marks on it. Is there another way to set the timing then?

If I don't move the distributor housing, can I just change the points,
condensor and rotor without adjusting the timing?

Thanks

Nate

Subject: Removing Tape and Moisture Control

I removed the grey carpeting in the back of my truck (on the wheelboxes, etc.)
and it was held down with long strips of double sided sticky tape, which I'm
now trying to get off. So far, I've tried a bottle called "GooGone" or
"GoopGone" and Bug'N'Tar Remover, both of which turn the lines into a jelly
which then smears everywhere... This stuff is hard to get off.

Any ideas on lifting this tape goop?

So anyway, the reason I took up the carpeting to begin with was that it held
in moisture every time it rained (you know, the water that leaks in...) and
the rover would have fogged windows and be all musty the next day. I decided
to switch from the carpet-type of floor mats etc., to the rubber ones which I
can clean and dry quickly.

I know there are rubber mats (from RN, etc.) for the front and middle of the
110, but I haven't yet seen one for the rear area. The other item I'd like to
change from carpeting to rubber or something impervious to water would be the
trans tunnel cover at the gearshift. ROW D90s that aren't SW/County trim have
them, I think. Or just go without, it isn't a big deal to me.

Since it is impossible to keep the water out, I may as well let it leave
easily, right?

Pat: Sounds like mine on a rainy day, very foggy. (Does that mean on a
cold day it snows inside?) Just get yourself one of those official LR

Most adhesives can be dissolved by solvents ranging from propylene,
ethyl alcohol, to petrol (gas) - my favourite is Xylene paint thinners -
even diesel works on some things.

Usual disclaimers - protect yourself when using this stuff!

Years ago, when I worked in a theatre in England, the cleaning staff had
some sort of freezing-spray in a can, which they used to freeze chewing
gum on the carpets and seat fabrics, when frozen, it could be bashed
with a hammer, and then removed with a vaccuum cleaner.

I have since tried similar operations with the freezer spray which we
use for cooling electronic components - works just as well.

I think this is a good solution if you can get the stuff - good luck!

Hi Dave,
I think that Clinton issued a prisidential order to that effect so that
no stuff could be brought in back after the federal building bombing. I
heard that part of the order ment ammo boxes were to be crushed no
resold. I think the government thinks all of the EX-MOD marerials could
be use by the civilians to over through the government.. Some
underground group have been formed using some of this stuff in any
event. The government stopped china from importing automatic assult
rifles in CA. for sale to street gangs for example.
Personally I only want a stage one 109 regular for my own use. any

These sprays generally contain freon (ozone eating) or a related compound.
As such they are becoming very (as in expensive and hard to find) rare.

Yes, your are missing something, the two special bolts!

I'm going from memory here, but I believe the two special bolts only pertain
to the imperial dimensioned Rover ring and pinion gears. From what I
recall, the way to identify the two special bolts is they are longer by
about 1/8" to 3/16". But more importantly, they also are a slightly larger
diameter at the shoulder (.390" vs. .375"). It is designed this way to
closely align the ring gear as it is initially tightened, before you fully
tighten the other bolts. You will notice that most Rover ring gears are not
a tight fit on the diff carrier, unlike other differentials.

Something that can't be overstressed is that if you are installing a ring
gear, is to make certian than you apply the correct liquid threadlocker to
all of the bolts, and evenly tighten to specs, also noting that the special
bolts are tightened to a different torque than the normal ones. I have seen
several Rover diffs ruined because the ring gear came loose, even with lock
plates installed.

I'll go out in the shop and scrounge up some Rover diff bolts, both imperial
and metric when I get a good chance.

It sounds to me like you need to do some preliminary investigation before you
declare you gearbox dead. It could be that all that is wrong is the ball on the
end of the main shift lever, or maybe you have a loos shift fork, or a broken
detent spring. All easy to fix without removing the gearbox.

Rebiulding the series Rover gearbox is very easy, as far as gearbox rebiulds go.
There is not a "lot" of micrometer work, but to get it right it does take some
accurate measurements, a good understanding of what you are doing and a LOT of
patience. Really, understanding exactly what you are doing and having patience
is most important with any Rover repair work. The transmission can be
diss-assembled without a press if you have a good assortment of hammers, drifts,
punches and circlip pliers. The case design is such that all of the gut's will
come right out without a press. This is because the original Land Rover
engineers had the forthought to design the gearbox casing such that the input end
of the casing unbolts with the bell housing.

Unless you just want to learn, or save money, or your Rover's health is not
essential to your life style. I would reccomend obtianing a quality rebiult unit
from a reputable Land Rover parts distributer. In my experience, the first time
a novice rebiulds the gearbox, there are a few minor problems. But hey, it's the
best way to learn.

Yes, it is a Land Rover built motor. It is the latest iteration (is
that a word?) of Land Rover's legendary 4 cylinder petrol and diesel
motors, which was an overhead valve design originally introduced with
the series II Rover in 1958 (I think). The TDi block is still very
similar to the original design. The big differences are in the cylinder
head of the TDi. An aluminum casting, with Bosch direct diesel
injection, designed with help from AVL in Graz, Austria. Also, all of
the later Land Rover diesels (turbos, and TDi) have the distributer pump
driven from a toothed belt direct from the crankshaft, unlike the
originals which were driven off the cam. And of course, the TDi' fuel
intake is supercharged, with a Garrett Air Research exhaust gas driven
turbine compressor (turbo).

In Australia only, a 3.9 litre indirect injection 4 cylinder Isuzu motor
was available from the factory in late series III, and later Land
Rovers. It is still the choice of Jaguar Rover Australia's (JRA)
military Land Rover, the Perentie. But my understanding is that it is
no longer available in civilian Land Rovers after the introduction of
the TDi.
