AlanR,
The Triumph Spitfire (at least in the US) has a lighter in the later
1500 model. (starting about '77, my guess). Why not just run a wire
direct from the fuse panel (port bulkhead)? It is good to see this
car mentioned. Seems like I never see them in the US anymore,
gone to dust everyone. BTW, which of the two vehicles, Series LR or
Spitfire, is the more cantankerous, unreliable, curse rendering?

Alex, what you need to cure these cmall, but annoying, problems is to
drive a series rover where you cant hear anything (including yourself

Attachments are considered rude behavior for lists as such. I don't
means to dampen your Holiday Spirit. But there are now about 1800
versions of your last two postings of binaries. ( also X.exe is for a
PC, many here are using Macs, I use a Sun Ultra II a Unix machine )

I don't mean so sound like a Grinch, however sometimes people who
continue to post binaries end up being subscribed to my favorite 400

throttle pedal without taking the foot all the way off the brake--thus the

Hi Granny,

I always thought of this as a technique in racing (shift without clutch, rev
high before leaving the start) or at least that's how we did it in high
school. Also useful on steep hills. It worked great with a GM setup where the
pivot point for the throttle was low and the throttle depressed in a
counterclockwise fashion. Heel on brake, toe on the top of the throttle
(longest possible arm from the fulcrum).

I tried it on the rover but with the pivot point is high and the throttle
rotates clockwise and I had to get out a yoga book to figure a way to
consistently depress the throttle. Do you have your accelerator pedal rotated
high (say even with the brake pedal)? I set mine on so that it only has about
1" left to the floor before I've opened the carb wide open.

Thanks
Nate

Dear Daniel & Julia,

Thanks very much for the Seasons Greetings. However well
intentioned, your triple dose of large, repeat files on the LRO and RRO
lists tied my computer up for an hour. Part of my work involves looking
though a variety of lists so I'm FORCED to endure the wait so I can get the
other mail mixed in with all your repeats.
I understand that accidents can happen (I'm probably more clueless
than most when dealing with 'puters) and I probably would have let it go
without saying anything (being on the list teaches patience and
forgiveness) but chuckling about Daniels "mistake" in a later note was a
handfull of salt in my wound. I winced. I suspect you will endure a bit of
a toasting from the flamemeisters on several front, so I won't add
anything. Please try to be more careful and consider that sending large
scanned images on the list, unbidden, is looked upon by a some listers as
an annoyance. Nuff said.

I haven't done anything special to the pedals. I have big feet (size 14)
and just rock my foot to the side and angled slightly (using ball of foot
mostly on both pedals). I don't recall noticing any problems, really.

The series IIa has a sort of spacer ring on the springs for the release
bearing to push on but the bearing pushes directly on the spring with
the series III. If you use a Series III type in a IIa the clutch will
not release and if you use a Series IIa type in the series III the
bearing will be in contact all the time resulting in premature failure
of the bearing and possibly clutch slip.

Martin; When you find a Defender for $2,000 you must do two things.

      1) Do not drive it, instead, call me right away, and tell no-one.

      2) Tell no-one, call me right away, don't drive it.

I'm just looking after your interests, and will come and take away the

The problem is that you think it is a fictional comedy -- it's
not, it's a documentary! That stuff is just too funny to be
made up. 'Course, I live in Colorado and have been through
the real South Park a few times, so I know of which I speak.

No LR content in the show, though there was a HUMMER in episode
number two, but it got blown up.

The trick is to fit the springs first, then get the tops into position against
the cylinder plungers. When you've done that, lever the bottoms into position
against the stops. The first one is usually fairly easy but getting the second
one located is a b*****d. I use a 12" pinch bar lubricated with a strong dose
of good anglo-saxon expletives.

My (genuine) S/III repair and ops manual says that the springs *must* be
installed on the inside but does not say why. I suspect though that putting the
springs on the outside could potentially pull the pad locating lugs out leading
to a complete loss of breaking, so I would not risk it.

Cheers,

Rick

Subject: Pink Panther paint

Millbrook Paints will make up any UK military paint colour on request - I've
gotten a couple off odd colours from them in the past for my vehicles. They're
located in the Millbrook area of Southampton, in the UK. Unfortunately I am on
the US west coast at the moment so don't have the exact address or phone
number handy - if you have trouble finding it let me know and I'll post it to
the list (please send e-mail to ricky@drift.demon.co.uk rather than to this
address). I bought paint from them about a year ago and if I remember correctly
the price was something like 12 pounds base charge plus 6 pounds per litre of
paint.

I did send this to the list a couple of days ago but I never saw the append in
the digest, so here goes again. Apologies if you get it for a second time, and
apologies for all the disclaimers this will get wrapped in....

Cheers,

Subject: RE: sliding door windows

Interestingly, my 1992 (ex-military) 130 still has the sliding windows and
series style doors. Obviously the parts were still being produced then and were
being fitted to military vehicles, even though the civilian ones had changed.
My 130 has a standard truck cab (not a crew cab) so these doors should fit a
110.

Howdy,

I need one rear orange lens for the back of Stubby, a 1960 series 2 88.
The lens is about 3 inches in diameter and mounts with 2 horizontally

Oh, I dunno... I've got a sister who probably wouldn't mind playing second
fiddle to a Land Rover -- so long as the guy didn't mind doing the same to a
horse(s).

Then, there are those who are lucky enough to find a mate who is equally

I stand corrected. (Except that the original poster was in the UK?)

So to let folks know, this is a very derogatory term for a homosexual in the
US; since this is an international list, we should avoid using it in any
potentially ambiguous context if we want to avoid losing the input of a lot
of list members.

I use water to clean brakes up and the same could be used for a clutch
system. Brake fluid washes away very well (as does all the junk behind a
brake drum). When you've finished, flush the clutch system with methylated
spirits (alcohol) to absorb the water. If you really wanted to, you could
flush then with brake fluid.

I don't think this will work with silicone fluids.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that his IIa is fitted with a soft top.
Actually, I don't think the articulation improvement is all that big.
The physical layout of the leaf sprung system sort of limits the
articulation.

I believe that the biggest improvement is in ride quality (soaks up
the small bumps in the road a bit better) and the fact that they seem
to be of better quality than the junk British Springs turns out these
days.

He's using Rancho shocks, if I remember correctly.
