Dave: Please fax me the oil pump info and a phone numb. for Kenne Bell.
I just started driving the rebuilt engine yesterday. I still have a problem,
so I am going to post this. At hot idle the oil pressure is still low (about
10 psi) and there is an light rapping from the the upper end, right side.
This occurred even when first started this morning but went away once oil
pressure was above 30 psi. It comes back when hot. I am not sure if one of
the lifters is not up to snuff, or there is some other problem. The cam and
lifters are new (both Crane), as are the pistons, all bearings, the oil pump
gears, timing chain and sprockets. The block was bored and boiled clean, as
were the heads. The heads have new guides and a valve job so all of the valve
stems are within a few thou. of each other. We checked and set the lifter
preload. Not new: push rods, rocker arms, rocker shafts. These looked good,
but were not stripped down. If anyone has a suggestion on how to isolate this
noise please let me know! Cheers. Andy Blackley

IS it about 3/8" away from going home? If it is then its the splines, if its
further then its something else. If ti is the splines then just turn the engine
with the crank or the fan and it should go right home.

I gave up trying to jiggle the overdrive into place around noon on Sunday
and removed the OD drive gear off the main output shaft. When I went to
put it away back into the OD, I played with it awhile. The teeth were not
hitting where I was stuck. So I took the OD and tried to install it
without a gear in place. It got stuck in the same place. It seems that
the hole in the transfer case is a tight fit. I started a nut on the top
stud and the OD just slid in as I tightened the top nut.

I put the gear back on and put the OD in by tightning the nuts. In
retrospect, I should have sanded the hole to make it slightly larger for an
easier slide fit. The OD is going to be a bear to remove.

Ned's got some aftermarket seat backs for his IIA.....
I ordered a set of backs and bottoms a couple of years ago. I remember the
seat back pivot bolt holes were there, under the vinyl, as Chris suggested.
However, they were tapped for a 1/4" course threaded bolt, rather than the
fine thread of the originals - meaning an extra trip to the hardware store.
The seat bottoms have a harder foam and are not as comfortable as the
originals. I've saved the originals - one day I'll have them recovered, or
stuff their foam in the new seats!

I'd love to fax you the info, but need your fax no. :-)

You have new oil pump gears, right? Did you use gasket cement on the
bottom oil pump cover? If so, there may be too much gap, and oil is
escaping below the gears lowering pressure. Did you examine the bottom
plate for wear? If there was scoring from the gears that'll reduce oil
pressure. Also, while not real likely, it's possible that one or both of
your "new" oil pump gears is shorter than the old, or shorter than
specifications require? (A long shot) A few thousands of an inch can
make a difference!

What is the maximum oil pressure you get? If it's low, you can replace
the oil pressure bypass spring. It's SUPER easy to do. Still, this
probably won't help if you have another problem with pressure.

Kenne Bell's technical support number: 909.941.0985

If you're able to get a measurement of the height of their gears, please
let me know!!! Thanks! They're 1/4 inch longer than the stock Buick, but
somehow, I get the idea that Rover gears are longer than Buick to begin
with.

Give me your fax #.

Same here. Forgot to mention that. I manhandled the first one and got

Does anyone know anything about half shaft quality of various venders in
the UK? There seems to be quite a variety in price between Dingocroft,
AEW Paddock, LR Supermarket, Famous 4, and Cradock.

Is there a definite difference between Genuine and "replacement" for
half shafts? I am wondering why AEW Paddock and LR Supermarket are
around a quarter of the price of the others. Even what AEW Paddock and
LR Supermarket are calling "genuine" is around half price of the others.

Anyone care to comment with personal experiences? Please???

A few pounds more or less adds up fast when you need 4 half shafts!

Thanks, Dave...

If you would like a more detailed response, please e-mail directly.
As we say "secondly" about this MG temp. stuff, can the sender be used as

I need to replace my temp. gauge sending unit etc. and the MG stuff is much
closer and maybe cheaper. O'course I have a 109 sIIa sw with the 2.25 petrol.

Well, there are two...one is the throttle stop screw, the other is the idle
*OR* slow running jet. Absolutely no, REPEAT *NO* "mixture" screw on a
Zenith 36IV. The one and *only* way to control mixture is to replace the
main jet with a larger or smaller orifice.

On the Zenith 36IVE ("E" for emissions) carb, the one with the little
economy valve poppet thingie, the idle screw was a solenoid that would cut
off fuel flow at shut down. This was replaced with the adjustment screw
with the 36IV model. When the solenoid fell out one time, I replaced it
with the Permatexed, broken off stub of a pencil. Worked fine for 10,000
miles. Cheers

Subject: Clutch pedal travel

I am curious if there is a difference in clutch pedal travel between the
clutch installed in a 93 NAS 110 and a 95 D90 TDi? The 110 has the gearbox
with "R" left and up (next to 1st) and the 90's "R" right and down (below
5th).

Maybe I'm just used to my 110's longer pedal travel and have to get used to
the TDi, but it just seems to need more. When I push down on the pedal, it
goes about 1 1/2" before encountering resistance, then goes another 3-3 1/2"
inches before touching the floor board or bulkhead.

Anyone driving something similar or have driven both gearboxes to know the
difference?

My understanding is that Minervas are regular 4x4, see

There were a few 4x2 Land Rovers tried (I had no idea Minervas),

The logical thing would be to delete the transfer case
and connect the gearbox to the rear diff with a prop'shaft,
in which case a rear diff in the centre, or even on the *left*

Subject: tranny/tansfer case gears

Hi,

just got off the phone with Greg durango, mill valley. He has a stock 2a
and want to get a lower first gear for rock crawling. He has already
changed the transfer case low range from 2.35 to 2.88. What else could he
do? He has the stock 2.25, tranny, transfer case, mcnamara diffs. He
mentioned different ratio for the diffs but does use the vehicle daily and
does not want to change the diffs.

he's heard of the marks adapter 5 speed 6.?? first gear but marks phone
number seems to be out recently (according to greg)

surely there must be rover solutions to rock crawling.

any helpful hints can be posted or forwarded directly to me and I'll call
him up and let him know.

thanks,

Subject: Looking for someone for SCANDINAVIA-holiday (VERY SOON)

Hi all!

It's a little late to ask but we are looking for someone who wants to go to
Scandinavia for a holiday. We are three people, a girl (Christa) and two
boys (Marc & Jeroen).

We were with four souls first, but one girl couldn't make it. So glad she
told us 1,5 week before we want to leave.

We plan to start on 12 july and we will be back three weeks later.

And of course we drive Land Rovers, two 110 300 TDi's. Oh, and we are going
to sleep in tents and eat nasty food.

Eh, we all live in the north of Holland, Jeroen in Emmen and Marc & Chris
in Westeremden (above Groningen).

If you would like to go, give us a ring at 0596 - 551334 (Marc & Chris) or
mail me at mr@grant.media-gn.nl

Oh and Chris hopes you are a girl. (I can understand that, last year we
were with a bigger group 5 boys and a girl and three cars, but that was to
much. The three cars and of course was one girl a bit alone with 5 boys).

I look forward for mail and phone-calls (It's a stupid answering machine)

Subject: discovery bike rack

Hello,

I just bought a (landrover) bike rack for my discovery. Before
I start fitting it has anybody fitted one? - any tips? The
instructions say to remove the whole rear bumper to drill in
holes for the vertical supports but it doesn't really
seem necessary.....

Cheers,

Tom
