I just started driving the rebuilt engine yesterday. I still have a problem, so I am going to post this. At hot idle the oil pressure is still low (about 10 psi) and there is an light rapping from the the upper end, right side. This occurred even when first started this morning but went away once oil pressure was above 30 psi. It comes back when hot. I am not sure if one of the lifters is not up to snuff, or there is some other problem. The cam and lifters are new (both Crane), as are the pistons, all bearings, the oil pump gears, timing chain and sprockets. The block was bored and boiled clean, as were the heads. The heads have new guides and a valve job so all of the valve stems are within a few thou. of each other. We checked and set the lifter preload. Not new: push rods, rocker arms, rocker shafts. When I went to put it away back into the OD, I played with it awhile. The teeth were not hitting where I was stuck. So I took the OD and tried to install it without a gear in place. It got stuck in the same place. It seems that the hole in the transfer case is a tight fit. I started a nut on the top stud and the OD just slid in as I tightened the top nut. I put the gear back on and put the OD in by tightning the nuts. In retrospect, I should have sanded the hole to make it slightly larger for an easier slide fit. Did you use gasket cement on the bottom oil pump cover? If so, there may be too much gap, and oil is escaping below the gears lowering pressure. Did you examine the bottom plate for wear? If there was scoring from the gears that'll reduce oil pressure. Also, while not real likely, it's possible that one or both of your "new" oil pump gears is shorter than the old, or shorter than specifications require? (A long shot) A few thousands of an inch can make a difference! What is the maximum oil pressure you get? If it's low, you can replace the oil pressure bypass spring. It's SUPER easy to do. Still, this probably won't help if you have another problem with pressure. Kenne Bell's technical support number: 909.941.0985 If you're able to get a measurement of the height of their gears, please let me know!!! Thanks! The one and *only* way to control mixture is to replace the main jet with a larger or smaller orifice. On the Zenith 36IVE ("E" for emissions) carb, the one with the little economy valve poppet thingie, the idle screw was a solenoid that would cut off fuel flow at shut down. This was replaced with the adjustment screw with the 36IV model. When the solenoid fell out one time, I replaced it with the Permatexed, broken off stub of a pencil. Worked fine for 10,000 miles. Before I start fitting it has anybody fitted one? - any tips? The instructions say to remove the whole rear bumper to drill in holes for the vertical supports but it doesn't really seem necessary..... Took me about 1 hour to figure that one out, otherwise, installing the overdrive in my diesel, was a 1/2 hour job.
