Re: the recent thread on substituting PAM for Waxoyl (for those who aren't
blessed with PAM in their country, it is a spray-on pan grease thing)...

Wouldn't the PAM that's on the frame near where the exhaust pipes run start
to sizzle after a while? Then drip down? Just curious... but would waxoyl do
that too?

I have heard of 2 methods:

1. Lots of penetrating oil and then liberal application of the air
chisel/hammer

2. Torch the bushing until all the rubber is burnt out then hacksaw through

I haven't had the pleasure yet but when I do, I think I'll try #1 first...I

Let's take a minute to remember them - the ones that came back and the ones

An let those of us in Europe who were born in the years after their
great endeavour contemplate the world into which we may have been born,
had they not paid the price for our freedom. Without the resources and
will of the American people, Europe would (for the second time this
century) not be a place to live and bring children into the world. Our
cousins from "The New Colony in the West" recognized, long before we
did, that the "Old World" of feiffdoms, kingdoms and in-bred monarchies
was unprepared and inadequate for the consequences of the industrial and
social revolution which we started.

June 6th 1944 was more than a landing on a beach, it marked the time
when all of Europe had to recognise that, if and when the war against
the Nazi's was won, Europe would not, and could not, ever be the same
again.

Ordinary farmers sons from idaho and virginia, whio hardly knew Europe,
let alone bore any responsibiolity for the mess which governed her,
brought a hopeful future to our shores. Let's us not screw it up again -
eh?

Thank-you America! (And thank-you Jim for reminding us)

Yours roverly (still the best car from the Old World)

Six divisions landed on the first day; three U.S., two British and
one Canadian. Two more British and one U.S. division were to follow up
after the assault division had cleared the way through the beach defenses.

UTAH BEACH was the landing area of the VII (U.S.) Corps
OMAHA BEACH linked the U.S. and British beaches (US 1st Division)
GOLD BEACH was the landing area of the 50th (Northumbrian) British 2d Army.
JUNO BEACH was the landing area for 3d Canadian Division.
SWORD BEACH was the objective of 3d (British) Infantry Division.

Most of the planning broke down, but despite this most achieved their
objectives.

Does anyone have tips on how to replace suspension bushings when fitting
new springs?

Get Polybushes, my friend. Mine were $24 a spring (3 bushes) from Britpac,
and I used the palm of my hand to press them in. The tougher ones required
a block of wood between my hand and the bush.

The extra cost is worth the trouble, and they are considered more durable
and supposedly offer a better ride.

And if they do go south I can pop em out in a jif...

Wow! That's nice stuff. I actually got a bit choked up. I thank you
on behalf of my (now deceased) grandfather who managed to live through
that day--a feat for which I am particularly grateful.

Oddly, I heard no mention of it on National Public Radio this morning
(although I was sheperding kids and making lunches, etc.), although
they've been talking all week about the 50th aniversary of the Marshall
Plan. Today, one commentator was lamenting that we (the USA) piss and
moan about spending about one tenth the relative amount on foreign aid
now that we spent on the Marshall Plan. Seems to me that the Marshall
Plan was just a plain old good investment--in addition to being the
right thing to do.

Sadly, I think we (again the USA) were probably more noble back then
than we are now.

If the truth must be known, he was being taken to a car wash to wash
his underbelly (ONLY), so that a fresh coat of waxoyl could be applied
sans dirt and salt and such. After literally pumping $15 in quarters
and getting myself and he soaked through, I pulled out and the guy
at the car wash asked "aren't ya gonna wash the outside?"

"What for?" was my response....only reason I can think of is to
remove what's left of his paint....

Subject: Hot start problems

Jeremy: I had this problem too, but I found that by adjusting the float level
and using a new O ring effected a cure. It was most embarassing to sit
cranking on the starter ( or using the hand crank after the weak battery gave
out) whilst passers by would comment on the unreliable LR, especially since
everything was redone and it was really very reliable. Grrr!
This issue was bandied about recently, as I recall, and the best explanation
was that heat soak would cause the fuel to "expand" ( I think that it would
start vaporizing and pressurize the float bowl) and if the O ring and the
sealing of the top of the carb was not good then fuel would trickle down into
the throat of the carb and flood it. If allowed to sit and cool off it then
starts fine (i.e. classic flooded carb) then this is almost certainly the
problem.
Cheers. Andy Blackley

Subject: LR Page & Engine Building

Jim: I enjoyed the web page. Keep up the great work! Why not add the
information about V8 engine building which appeared in FW last fall?
On that subject, I recent bought a Crane H 202/260-2s-12 cam. They now use a
new part number with a 90- prefix. I found that if a tried the old #890531
they would show that that cam is out of stock, when in fact they had three
(now 2 :>) ) in stock. Lists at $125.
Edlebrock also makes a roller timing gear set, #7828, which Summit Racing
will order for you but dont stock. At $48 I think it is a great deal for a
street application.
Finally, which is the best valve guide seal for the V8 - O ring or umbrella?
and do you have a part number ( is it a standard 11/32 seal?).
Thanks. Andy Blackley

Without intending to detract from the real significance of D-Day (which
others have pointed out), but to make it more relevant to our normal
content: without D-Day there would be no Land Rovers. Land Rover can be
said to have emanated from several interrelated factors, not the least of
which included: (1) the redirection of resources to overthrow fascism in
Europe created temporary civil shortages which in turn created the
distinctive primitive features of the Land Rover (aluminum body, etc.),
(2) the massing of American troops in England for the overthrow of
Fortress Europe (and the whole old order it respresented) brought with it
one particular little, redirected resource which directly inspired the
Land Rover, namely the Jeep.

Yes, same here. My grandfather was wounded at 11am on D-Day and became a
prisoner of war, spending many years in the UK. That's why he survived the
war and I was able to meet my grandfather when I grew up.

Yup. Unlike some of the very recent engagements.

Perhaps. But just try to catch international news in this country. What
else than, NPR, ITN on PBS or CNN World Report is there? Zilch.

That was the most shocking thing to me when I came to this country. And any
judgement about the motivation of the population in this country with regards
to foreign policy has to be viewed in that context.

Anyhow. Thanks for putting up with the non-LR content. ;-)

Chris

As important D-day in Europe was, please don't forget it wasn't just in
Europe. People were fighting and dying all around the world.

On June 6th, my father was a marine on a transport arriving for a June 15th
D-day for the invasion of Saipan, where he was wonded for a second time.

Let us all hope that nothing like this ever happens again.

Built and used by Guerba Expeditions for Overland Safaris, this truck has
crossed Africa seven times -- that's starting in England, crossing to
France, down through Spain, Crossing to North Africa, across the rock
plateaux and soft sands of the Sahara, through the rain forests and
quagmired tracks of Central Africa, to the open plains and game reserves of
Kenya and Tanzania and on down the continent to Cape Town.

Usually a five month journey for eighteen hardy (and paying) souls
including a driver and mechanic.

Oh, price. I'd like $4500. Located in SF Bay Area, California

This is a great truck with a noble history and I'd hate to have to sell to
someone who'll strip it down and use it to haul manure on the farm.

Please e-mail me direct with anything that pertains to this rather than
clogging the list with non-LR stuff.

Hi, Folks,
The PO of my '65 Ser IIa 109" SW did a shoody job of door weather

as original with the metal insert to be riveted. Where can I get this
stripping from in bulk?
I have the ankle-burned heater and I am going to install a Ser III
heater in the SW. Will I be draining too much hot water from the
engine? I'm in Alaska and will have a 120v AC canister heater
installed. Can too many heaters rob the engine of too much hot water?
What if I later wanted to install a rear heater? Can I prevent cutting
