I'm back! I'm back! Somewhere along the line I lost all my mail, got
kicked off the list, and started withdrawl pains. Thanks ALL for the
private e-mail, got back on the list and found you again! Thanks for the
info on the valve guide problem, got that sorted out now. Still can't
understand why the BL parts catalogue doesn't match up with the BL parts
I have and the Rovers North cat does! I lost the threads on the cyl
head, but I'll ask again. I think a trip to the archives is in order!

Thanks to all!

You shouldn't have any problem returning the grips if the jaw broke.
They'll even take them back if the jaws are twisted. I have returned
grips when the finish corroded off them. I had used them with around
Muriatic Acid and it really did a job on them. Sales clerk said, "Gee,
they look terible, must have been a bad batch they ran off" Got a new
pair. I used to sell these things through my tool truck and did warranty
for all kinds of reasons. I just happen to be a Vise-Grip fan, ask anyone
who's seen my tool box. I got standard, metric, left hand ,right hand,
and the new no hand. ;-)

     All,

I think someone was keeping a list, so...

A 1972ish movie called something like "It Came From Beyond Space,"
which *appeared* to be nothing more than an unsuccessful pilot for
Brit TV bought by someone in the US who added titles at front and back
and called it a movie. Anyway, real B-grade camp with an almost
continuous presence of a green Series I. This amusing movie looks a
lot like "The Avengers" without Steed and Mrs. Peel. Of course, that
show had its own episode featuring a Series "military truck." Well,
of course, space is infinite, and nothing comes from *beyond* it, and
the first 5 seconds (!) of the movie contains the first instance of
the usual generic "outer space noise." Anyway, Sci-Fi Channel last
     weekend.

Dear Sir,
The main difference is ride , the heavy duty springs have an additional 1 to 2
leaves, depemdong on manufacture. This will give a slight amount of ride hight
increase for a short time untill they relax. For the long hall they will be a
slightly stiffer ride...No Land Rover spring is indellible...regardless of
what the rest of the vehicle can do...

Does anyone have a right side door top for a SIII that they'd like to sell?
It doesn't need to have glass, but I would like for it to not have a

interior trim yesterday.

Also, can someone post the telephone number of the place in Vermont (not RN)

Subject: US registration with UK plates

I recently went through the ordeal of registering my 1969 SIIa in Virginia, and
I thought some of what happened might be helpful to others on the list. The
truck was brought in from the UK with all of the paperwork - including a
current MoT. The plates on the truck were original(1969), as shown on the MoT.
When I asked at the DMV about using the UK plates I was told Virginia has a
vintage plate rule. Basically, this allows anyone with an old (subjective) car
to use an original plate as long as it is from the vehicle manufacture year
i.e. a 1969 car must have a 1969 license plate. The plate does not have to be
original to that car. I was told that quite a few people go to junk yards and
buy the year plate they need. You then take this plate with you when
registering your car. The DMV does a check to make sure the number is not in
use, and assuming it is free the number is assigned to your car. It registers
as a daily driver, not an antique with use restrictions.

Good luck in using those old UK plates.

Subject: What cooked my starter?

Baby just had a starter transplant. The old starter quit, and when we
opened it, the brushes had been reduced to powder. The electrical shop said
the problem was overheating. What would make a starter overheat so
radically? In the course of the starter transplant, we replaced the
flimsy-looking power lead with a very fat "six volt" one-gauge cable. We
replaced the cable after we found that it was receiving twelve volts and
delivering nine. Would the undersize wire possibly have caused the
overheating? If so, there are lots of Land Rovers out there with
potentially damaging power cables to their starters.

Subject: Famous Four & UK Parts Buying

Listers: I would also like to reinforce recent endorsements of Famous Four.
Not only do they have great prices and service they also stand behind the
stuff they sell. Recently I was sent a new AC Thermostat switch, a Gen-u-ine
part, from them which was not correct (LRs fault - correct catalog number,
wrong part) and Martin Stebbing has been relentless in contacting LR for me
to straighten things out. The correct part will be on its way as I write
this. They have an email address (Fam4x4@Aol.com) and will respond relatively
quickly (in a day or two). I have a feeling that the volume of business they
get is growing and may be slowing them down a tad.
Anyway, they can rush stuff to you UPS regular or overnight. Regular UPS
takes about a week to Cleveland, Ohio. UPS then sends you a customs invoice
(about 8 to 10 percent). The upshot is that they are much cheaper on most
items with about 3 to 4 days delay compared to the domestics. Forget dealers
unless you need warranty work.
Cheers. Andy Blackley
PS Almost forgot: Kudos to Bill Caloccia for the great update of the LRO and
RRO indexs, especially the /today/html for impatient Digesters. Check it

as well as the list???? Thanks!!!)

Hi there all,

I've had my Landie about a week now, so I've got a few things you might
be able to help with???? What a bunch of great guys!!!! :-)

I have 6.00 x 16 Avon Traction Mileage tyres, on SWB rims. What pressure
should they be at?????

If I wanted to change to radials with a road bias, would I be better
getting LWB rims, or just road tyres to fit these rims??? (All the tyres
are good, and I canna afford to change them now!)

I have indicator bulbs in the dash, however when I start to indicate, a
yellow lights glows momentarily, then goes out. It's in the small centre
console type bit! Any ideas why????

Also in the centre console bit, there is a blue rectangular light. There
is a sticker above it which is only partially legible, something like
"....rake". I presume brake, but it never lights. Any ideas?????

I took it off-road tonight for the first time!!! :-)))) On a slight
hill, muddy path, 1st low, it jumped out of gear a couple of times. I
put it into 2nd low and it was fine. I tried to get it to jump out of
1st low a bit further along the track, but it held fine!! ???????

Sorry about all these questions, but it's my first Landie!!

TIA....

Subject: Advice sought on refurb LR purchase

Hello all:

I am a potential Rover owner who just stumbled on this mailing list
today... what a gold mine of knowledge and experience! I'd love to join
the proverbial club... for their utility, personality, and nostalgia (I
lived in England for a year).

I'd like to ask a question. Ideally, I'd love to get a brand new D110.
Obviously that is not going to happen here in the US. Next option:
1993 D110 NAS, for $45-$50K. Right. Next option: Some sort of 109,
which is where I am stuck today.

Whatever I get, be it a Rover or not, has to serve as a daily driver.
I've heard it said that "these vehicles were never designed to be every
day transport or to be used on motorways, and must be treated as you
would any 25 year old classic car" (from "The Land Rover Centre" of
Huddersfield, an importer). Does this group agree with that sentiment?

I've been in touch with Renewed Traditions of Atlanta, GA concerning the
purchase of a refurbished 109. (Gotta be a 109... an 88 won't cut it
for our needs... skiing, hockey, mountain climbing, a Great Pyrenees...)
I searched through the archives at this site and uncovered some fairly
virulent comments about Sean Sinkule and his company. I don't mean to
open up any old wounds here, but does anyone have anything recent to say
about him/them? I have had a decent experience so far with him...

The particular type of package I'm interested in would be a Series III
109 with their "Defender" front end and interior, with a "new" (rebuilt)
2.5L diesel and 5-spd transmission and full-time 4wd. His price for
this vehicle would be ~$17K. I know that's expensive, but I need a
vehicle that I can trust to be in sound mechanical condition. If I
can't find a LWB Rover in this price range that is, I'll be forced to
get some sort of TroopRunnerFinder!

Any helpful thoughts? I've been looking into this for three months now
and am beginning to despair that I will ever find a comfortable,
drivable, restored 109 from a trusted soul. I can't afford to get
burned on a $15K car...

Subject: Just Plain Crazy

G’day all

Well I did something totally bizarre today. I don’t know why, but I
found myself in a preventative maintenance sort of mood and changed both
rear half shafts. Not sure what came over me but I guess after changing
three broken half shafts in the last 13 years, I may have finally wised
up a bit.

Gee…, maybe tomorrow I’ll do the yearly changing of the motor oil or
topping up of the gearbox, or something equally crazy.

Rover and out

Last week must have been a bad week for starters. I went on business in =
the lower valley, when I got there I went to see my little brothers now =
living in my old fraternity. When I got back in and turned the key, the =
starter motor spun but did not engage. At some point I will have to =
take it apart and fix what is most likely the cyliniod but for now, =
thank god for the crank start.

On another note. The route I take to work includes a stretch of road =
through a wetland refuge. With all the rain we have had this winter it =
has been flooded quite a bit. Last week I was pleased to see it flooded =
so I could drive across the temporary lake. When I got there I found a =
small car off the road in a ditch above its windshield in water. I got =
a chance to chain up to him a drag him back to the safety of dry land. =
I think it made his day as much as mine.

The starter died. The relay would click, but the starter was dead as a
Dalek. We discovered that the aftermarket positive line from the relay =
to
the starter was delivering only nine volts. Bingo, sez me! Replaced the
skinny little aftermarket cable with a one-gauge ("six-volt") line, and
twelve volts came from the relay. After much cussing, got the starter =
again
wired up, and still nothing happened.

Removed the starter and opened up the back end. It was packed with a
granular grey dust that might have been the brushes. The starter was
opened and cleaned last year, when the post at the back came loose. The
local electrical shop reset the terminal post and must have cleaned it =
up.
The brushes appear to be much older than a year old. So what happened? =
Why
would the brushes disintegrate so quickly? Should I just replace the
brushes and continue as if nothing had happened?

Jim,
I don't know about the Denver area, but you might try the First
National Garage in Boulder. I don't know the phone or address, but they
used to be on Pearl street in the late seventies, which is when and where I
bought my first Series. I know they are still in business because the
latest LRO had a bit about them.
