If anyone knows something I'd appreciate an email please! Help! Is anyone familiar with this engine ( Mpi) for the Disco? I've been having some oil leaks. First the front crankshaft oil seal and the rear cam shaft oil seal. Got that fixed. Now the front camshaft oilseal is leaking. Some one suggested checking if the eng breather tube is blocked. Does the Mpi have one? I can't find it! And the workshop manual doesn't show one! Any suggestions? Someone asked earlier about a screen dumper for the CT-screen saver. Get Paint Shop Pro. When installed, select Capture -> Setup and setup a hotkey that is not used by the Windows environnement (try F12). Select Capture -> Start... Fire up the saver. When you want one of the pictures, press the hotkey. The image is now ready to be edited in PSP (or another program of your choice). Subject: Re: Screensavers/computers Date: Sat, 18 Jan 97 17:16:41 -0000 From: Simon Ward-Hastelow <simon.110.v8@dial.pipex.com> Just a personal question - do we all use PCs or are there also Mac owners in the Landrover Comunity. A theory in a recent discussion was that if a person chose to own and use a vehicle as unique and individual as a Landrover then it would not be surprising if that attitude influenced their choice of computer. But then again most people with a mind for automotive engineering would probably choose a functional, efficient if slightly boring PC as a tool, rather than an 'arty type' who might chose a Mac as an extension of their creativity. Personally I use Macs, always have, always will and would not use a PC for anything other than a doorstop - but thats only my highly biased opinion. __________________________________ Simon Ward-Hastelow, Orpington, Kent, UK "DOROTHY" - 1985, 110, V8, CSW (24mpg) __________________________________ ------------------------------[ <- Message 6 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 970119 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

I was with a friend today who has complained a couple off years about his heater and after several conversions he had found the absolute solution : First you take the thermostat housing from a recent 2.5 and replace the old one, now you have two pipes from the front to feed your heatermatrix. Then you put blanking plugs in the old holes. After that you replace the heating tap with a bigger one. The next step is to put a second heatermatrix in front of the old one and use the biggest hoses that you can fit. When you have done all this you will not believe how hot it can get in a Series. I went with my friend for a short journey and I was really impressed. I couldn't stand the heat and I drove never in a car that heated up so fast. O... i must mention that his '88 has a 2.5 petrol that is converted to LPG. I can recommend this for everybody who has it cold and it is also a very cheap conversion. Give it a try and you will never again complain about cold. regards, -- ____________ // | | Luc Rokegem ____//___| |# http://www.belgonet.be/~bn000165/index.html | _ | | _ |# defender@belgonet.be |_/ \|____|___/ \__| ex-army 110 \_/ \_/ my next one = Lightweight with 2.5 Td/5-speed ------------------------------[ <- Message 10 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 970119 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Date: Sat, 18 Jan 1997 21:44:52 -0500 (EST) From: Hank Rutherford <ruthrfrd@borg.com> Subject: RE:need mechanic help In my experience, the easiest way to check for spark/ignition is to attach a timing light to the coil wire and use the light as a visual indication of spark reaching the distributor from the coil. You get 4/6/8 times as many sparks per 2 revs as you would normally but don't shine the light at the engine, aim it so you can see it. If you see light, then the low tension side is ok and so is the high side up to the rotor. Now move the timing lite pickup to a plug wire. You should get one spark per 2 revs of the crank. If no spark, indeed you have an ignition problem. This method works a lot better than holding a plug wire combination exactly 2.3mm from a good ground and you may be able to do it alone. One or two jolts from the ht side of a high energy ignition system would probably mean your helper left anyway. Any other ideas out there? I have done some research on the importation situation: before 1995 importing a 101 was definitly possible. now the door has slammed shut on this loop-hole. it is no longer possible to circumvent the law, the 101 will never pass the DOT safety tests. it could pass the EPA crap with the use of Range Rover donated smog stuff. you may consider a 101 with a cage. there are ways of getting anything into the country, legally I mean. you don't want to get caught doing the bad stuff, the penalties have gone WAY up. Date: Sun, 19 Jan 1997 09:48:06 -0500 From: Iwan Vosloo <ivosloo@cs.up.ac.za> Subject: Brake fluids Hi all, I have scanned through the messages about brake fluid, but still found a few (2) lose ends I'd like to clarify. Everybody seemed to say to use Castrol Dot 4 fluid, but no-one really said much about other makes of Dot 4 fluids. The only info I could find came from Eric Zipken (Mon, 4 Nov 1996). He said: "....it seems that the older rubber that may be found on some vehicles or with older NOS rebuild kits is suceptible to non Castrol fluids. If your system is relatively new, however, I'm pretty sure that any type of brake fluid can be used... I say this although I've only used on Castrol on my Rover (it isn't any more expensive than other types) but I have on my Spitfire, with no apparent problems yet....." 1) Can anyone offer more info? and... does anyone have any experience regarding the Dot4 fluid made by Shell? The other loose end was raised by Jim Wolf (Fri, 13 Sep 1996). He inquired about the use of Silicon Brake fluids (Dot 5). He wanted to know if anyone has tried it and/or whether it is compatible with the rubber used on the seals of LR's (either EPDM or SBR?). 2) So: did anybody? I also have a third (and hopeless) question for owners of Left hand drive vehicles: Is there any easy way (read: trick) to get access to the clutch master cylinder? Last time I had to remove first the brake and then the clutch pedals completely and then worked on it 'on the bench' as they say... - Iwan Vosloo ( 1975 SIII 88" Diesel SW ) ------------------------------[ <- Message 17 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 970119 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Recently this has begun to get 'stiff' when engaging and dis-engaging. Anybody come across this before and know what the likely cause(s) are? I wondered if maybe it's not something as simple as requiring an oil change - if so, can anybody tell me where the drain/filler plugs are? I looked at the unit and there is no obvious place to do either. I always thought that the o/d was fed oil from the main gearbox, whose oil is changed regularly. Is this correct?? The vehicle came with the unit fitted, so I have no documentation or manual for the o/d. Happy Rovering!
