Subject: Re: Anti-Theft Precautions

Some time ago there were some tongue-in-cheek suggestions for 4 unlocked FWHs
as an anti-theft precaution. Inadvertantly I have just discovered a simple
means of foiling the majority of thieves seeking to drive off in a series
diesel.
The return spring on the fuel shut-off valve to the fuel distributor pump
broke. Being familiar with my vehicle, the feel of the pull-out on the
steering column immediately gave the game away, but my wife who tried to start
the vehicle first, was completely unable to do so.
Until I replace the spring, it is a simple matter to insert the key, push in
the slide, open the bonnet (hood) and open the valve manually. The gloves I
keep in the front even stop my hands getting oily.
Whist removing the spring won't stop the expert thief; even in the UK where
Land Rovers are common, the average "joy rider" is probably not familiar
enough with Landies to figure it out. In the US this might work even better.
Those of you with petrol motors will just have to keep taking out the rotor
arm.
Finally, as I don't post that often, this is probably my only opportunity to
wish everyone who celebrates such things a happy Christmas and to wish
everyone a good years Rovering.

Nice call on the Diesel return spring - I like it!

On Series Petrol engines, a switch in the coil lead from the distributor
works just as well...and if one owns a Smiths inductive tachometer, it can
be put right in line with it.

Your average joyrider jumping into a series Landie will be so bamboozled by
the three gear levers they'll be stuffed anyway, add to that the pushbutton
starter and the fuel cut off lever and the you'll be able to catch the
average joyrider the following morning still trying to work out how to make
it go :-)

Merry Christmas and an even Merrier New Year to all on the list; and if
you're in Glencoe over New Year I'll see you in the Clachaig!

I hate to tell you, but this would be a heavy duplication of effort. I
have already created exactly such a page at
http://www.learnlink.emory.edu/solaros with online adding of data. If
you're interested in helping out with what we've got already, I can
always use someone to add more data.

If anyone is interested in joining me, I'm goin' to Baja next month for a
photo safari. It will be an eight day-900 mile journey on the peninsula
starting from San Diego on 1-19-97 early AM. I'll be driving down from
Washington on the 17th. The trip is planned to go down the sea of Cortez
side as far as Bahia de Los Angeles then go west to the Pacific to continue
north to San Diego. I plan on spending 6 days camping and 2 days in hotels
(Probably in San Felipe-East coast and San Quentin-West coast). The journey
as planned will be approximately 1/3 off-road and 2/3 on road (if you can
call them roads). I plan on getting lost a couple of times in hopes of
finding Eden but will not have a problem getting back to the world as I
have on board GPS. This trip is for sure with set departure dates. I'll go
alone but it would be nice to have along a fellow Rover owner. If it sound
interesting to you E-mail me for more details.

The idea of using these exhaust wraps has been thoroughly discussed on a
few other lists I'm on and the general consensus is to not use them.
Moisture well work it's way underneath the wraps and rust out your piping
very fast. The other problem that some people found is that wraps keep the
heat in and found that it both lowered their performance and damaged the
exhaust system since it was now running at a much higher temperature than
it was designed for.
Hope this info helps a little.

Subject: Exhaust shielding (was Re: Gearbox pic)

As part of a thread I missed the beginning of Jim comments:
> I have also been looking at the exhaust wrap to help keep the heat away
> from the interior of the vehicle. Anyone tried that or a similar
product? You might try a simple metal heat shield, a simple piece of steel
(galvanized to prevent rust) between the exhaust and floor. Either clamp it
to the pipe, or mount on simple standoffs from the body. LR did this on SI,
SII, SIIA/III 6 cylinders, and some of the pieces are still available. Its
also standard practice by most auto manufactuers these days, particularly
around catalytic converters. Wrapping the exhaust is just going to transfer
the heat downstream, and probably not help exhaust system life.

David Cockey

Regarding various recent threads in which I have not been
able to participate due to a completely befuddled
          staff of 'puter techs...

I was in Jeff Bergs 88" with Bill C. at the wheel
when the front wheels left the ground. Before
entering the off-road course I couldn't get the
seat belt on due to the side angle we were on...I
guess it was good foresight to make Bill drive up

you are going to rebush, i would get polybushes...

As for Eric's driving, i guess Sandy'll have
to make the course a little more "damaging"
next year...Maybe the folks at EC rover could

Subject: Had It With The Zenith!

Chris:
I'm catching up so this may not be timely. Also. it's my first
post so I may inadvetantly
make some mistakes.
I'm stationed in the United Kingdom and own a 1960 IIa, formerly of
British Telecom.
I recently replaced my Solex carb with a Weber. Everything went smooth
until it came time
to hook up the throttle linkage, which was reversed. It turns out that the
Weber carb you
reference was intended to replace your Zenith- literally drop right in.
The Solex had a
reverse working butterfly and required some shade tree mechanic-ing to hook
up. (The
company is so used to Yorkshiremen using the same carb and making their own
adaptations that they no longer stock two replacement carbs.)
All in all installation was straight forward. Adjustment was the
same as on the
Solex, and I;m told it will be the same for the Zenith. My performance has
increased-
smoother operation, easier starts, better idle- but my gas mileage has not
improved,
which surprised me. I'm looking at an intense 'tune-up to see what the
problem
might be.
Overall, if it's time to replace the Zenith, I'd say go with the
Weber.

                Cheers from sunny Yorkshire,
                Bruce Eike

If you're interested in helping out, I'd be more than happy for the
help. I'm considering adding a Java applet to save the data and sort
it properly, since it's getting rather bulky. However, I really need
people in other areas to gather info from vehicles they see and enter
them. This is especially true for meets, clubs, and gatherings.

I just read an article in the NY Times that Nissan Corp. is buying up
1970's 240 Z sport cars and restoring them to be sold through select
dealers
....snip....
.Can you imagine what would happen to the old
Series vehicles if Land-Rover decided to take this marketing tact.
          ...snip....

There is somewhere already where they do
that, SA perhaps? I remember seeing it in one of
          my LROI's or LRWhatevers...
Mostly SIII's. They'd have a tough time doing it
with the IIa's though, unless they stuck a bunch
of SIII parts on. Besides, if they did, it would
probably only work in NA, where we are forced into
owning either a brand new one or a 25 year old
Series. Bet it would be a limited edition
too...wonder if they'd do it anyway, for fear of
cutting into their own sales of the more pricey
          vehicles...
What kind of warranty would they give??
I can picture it now, typical warranty
          claim might go like this:

" Hello, LRNA headquarters, this is Wanda."

"Yes, hi, I'd like to register a complaint about
my limited edition Heritage Model Defender (gack)
          Series III"

          "What's the problem?"

"Well, it's loud, cold, and slow, and the
transmission, engine, diffs, and axles are all
          leaking"

          "So what's the problem?"

"Its ruining the terra cotta pavers on my
          new driveway"

"Have you been to a dealer for your 500 mile
          service?"

"Ummm, I think I missed it, the speedometer cable
          broke"

"Does your dealer know about the problem?"

"Yes, they've replaced all of the drivetrain six
          times"

          "And it's STILL leaking?"

"The dealer says its okay, that it's just
'wicking', but those terra cotta pavers are damned
expensive, besides the neighbors are complaining
that its an eyesore, and the maid won't come to
work anymore because she says in her country the
          secret police drove one"

"Well, sir, I'm sure there's something we can do,
how about if we put you on the waiting list for
our next limited edition model, the Series One
Heritage Defender 80 inch Centre-Steer Model"

"80 inch? Center Steer? What's that?"

"Its the very first Land Rover ever made, only two
of em. One's gone missing, the other one is being
          sold as a limited edition."

          "Just one?"

"Well, there's about 7500 people on the waiting
list so far, but I'm sure we can arrange to have
you bumped up to, say, 1500 or so."

          "Will it pass California SMOG?"

"Of course, sir. It's also equipeed with a drivers

Hello,

I don't know if you got the message I sent previously, have had reports back
of inability to deliver. The following are pertinent assumiong we are still
needed:

3) Telephone numbers: we will be off the net from Friday evening on. What are
your phone numbers? Our numbers are:
810-651-2744 Michigan, home
810-986-8372 Michigan, work
410-321-6284 Maryland, house we will be at from Saturday 12/20 till Monday
12/30
410-692-5851 Maryland, brother's house where messages can be left if problems
arise.

3) David, can you deliver the parts to Maryland? I don't know what our
schedule will be, and it may be doubtful that we could make a run to northern
Virginia.

Our location in Maryland is a mile or so north of the Baltimore Beltway. Exit
26 North, York Rd. MD 45. Go north through several traffic lights, past
intersection with Amoco, Exxon and Texaco Gas stations (Seminary Ave.) Turn
right on Croftley Road, second street after Texaco station. Second house on
left, grey shingle & brick ranch. Address is 8 Croftley Road.

It shouldn't be a problem carrying the parts; it looks like we'll be driving
a large van.

We will be off line from Friday afternoon until returning to Michigan on 1/5.

Regards,
David Cockey

Question is, what is the recommended tyre pressures for this, using

Next thing you'll be wanting is break-away *trees*. ;-) Nope, next year
it'll be steel re-rod. We got a buncha that.

For those who haven't seen it..."sphincter hill" (aptly named) is especially
scary for the "navigator" unless you're driving a RHD. It's an off camber,
severe downhill turn that has the passenger looking straight into a
tree-lined ravine. For the driver, it's no big deal.

While I have everything appart, I'm replacing my 109's old Ford alternator

There is a little plug with a small red and smaller white wire comming off.
Where do these go to?

My guess is the red to the battery and the white to the generator lamp.
Can anyone confirm this?

If I route the big heavy output wire directly to the battery, is there any
reason why I just couldn't run the little red wire to the big wire
connection on the back of the alternator?

Has anyone tried rerouting the intake of a Kodiak heater so it reheats
"heated cabin air rather than outside temperature air??

I currently have the front wings off my car, and the modification looks
very easy to do. I would need to shorten the intake duct, and cut a hole
in the upper diagonal part of the right side foot space. This would
pickup air from the upper footwell.

It seems to me that if I could reheat the heated air, it might actually get
warmish in the 109. Anyone tried this yet? Any fume problems (It should
seal well)?

Paul,

Good to see you! I think that Sandy Grice was the one who had the custom
visors made. I got one, put it on my rover, and it is the talk of the town!

If he ever decides to reproduce them again, I've got about 3 other

Is it true that in Land Rover folklore that one must elevate the front of
a 109 when bleeding the brake system? I'm having difficulty getting all
the air out of the lines and wonder if this is the magic bullet.

No, the magic bullet is to turn it on its side, first one side, then the other.
The problem is that the bleed screws on the front wheel slave cylinders are
on the horizontal centre line, therefore air can easily be trapped above the
bleed hole when attempting to bleed the brakes.
I have written many times to the digest over the past couple of years on
how to bleed 109 brakes, I have just had trouble with my mail software and
lost all my mail so i can't go back and find it.
Please E mail me direct if you cannot find it.

hi all,
last week I changed my pickup cab on my 90 for a station wagon top. I ordered
take-off parts from the UK, which worked out very reasonable. The main
components are the roof (plus alpine windows), sides (plus aluminium-framed
sliding windows) and rear door. However, I don't have a US-spec 90 so didn't
have to bother with the roll cage. It is not hard to do but you need to check
the parts manual to be aware of all the angle brackets, nuts & bolts, sealing
strips etc. that are essential for a proper job.

The first overwhelmimg impression is the amazing visibility out of the back and
sides, compared with what I had through the soft top on the rear of the pickup.

While I have the panel off I thought I might replace the manual antenna with
an automatic one. I broke the top off in the brush... too irresponsible to
get out in the mud to lower it until it was gone. Has anyone made the shift
themselves or have suggestions? As I understand I will need an power lead
from the radio and a continuous power lead from somewhere else.
Thanks, Bob Jameson

Depends where they are/what they're doing...

How about "Obliviuos"; just ask spenny when you see him. Or better yet, ask
him after New Year's celebration. This anecdote should be on someone's web
page by now.

Or perhaps "Rover-whipped"...

*On the deep thoughts subject...is it my imagination, or have a lot of
*coil sprung folks wound up on this list...after the "Great Divide" . I
*see several questions and signatures with RR, D90, and Disco in them.
*Interesting.

I quit the list a year ago after it became overloaded with irrelevant rubbish.
After having another peek I find that it is now back to being an interesting
and informative source of Rover chat.

Also had a look at the CRO list, as I own an old and well used 110, but find
this list more interesting. (I still miss the old IIA). And I think that any
true Landrover mad person who owns a coiler for whatever reason secretly
hankers
for a Series vehicle, or two, or three.......

Probably won't be contributing much as I am temporarily estranged from my Rover
(but not complaining).

Subject: Engine Conversions.

William L Leacock recently asked about engine conversions to his S III 88.

Bill, make sure that you really want to spend the money on the vehicle
first. If the answer is yes, then make sure it is a darn good job cause it
can cause more problems than it is worth.

I modified my S III 109 Wagon from its non-original S IIa 2.25 Rover diesel
to a 3.9 Isuzu 4 Cyl diesel and also changed the worn out S IIa gearbox for
a Ni**an 5 speed truck gearbox. The rest of the drive train is standard Land
Rover. The choice of engine was swayed by the fact that here in Oz, 109
Stage 1's and 110 County's came with a choice of 3.5 V8 or Isuzu 3.9 Diesel,
and pre-loved engines are relatively easy to find.

What I ended up with is an excellent machine for both daily commuting and
off-road work. The power and torque figures are about the same as a 300Tdi
however the torque starts from idle with no waiting for a turbo to wind up.
It was not cheap but the result was worth it. The old thing is comfortable
at 60 mph on the open road and returns about 25mpg empty on the highway, 22
mpg with a full load. Off road, the diesels engine braking is superb and
steep hills never require the wheel brakes!

Perhaps this doesn't answer your question, but some engine conversions can
turn out OK.

Regards, Phil Carkagis.

I have a Series III 109 that I modified a a year ago to cure the problem
that you speak about. The original breather housing was removed and replaced
with a banjo type fitting with a gas thread to screw into the axle casing. A
length of heavy rubber tubing like heater hose or fuel hose is clamped onto
the axle fitting and routed up into the engine bay to finish near the heater
box. Nylon lock-ties hold the tubing secure against the brake hose and other
parts of the body etc. A plastic fuel filter caps the end of the hose to
stop dust and dirt getting down to the turning bits.
I did this to both diffs, gearbox, transfer case and fuel tank so that there
is now no problem with over-pressure and (more)leaks when things heat up.It
also means that there is less likely-hood of getting water in the diffs
during river crossings if the vehicle is hot (it doesn't help the swivel pin
housings, however!)

I hope that this is some help,
Regards, Phil Carkagis.

Subject: Ford V8 into series, SA tour 1998

Hi there folks,

A) Has anyone any info on putting a Ford Fairlane V8 into a series
   LR ?
I have a friend in Zimbabwe who has the motor and some spare time.

B) Please have a look at my home page regarding the 1998 Golden
jubilee tour of South Africa as planned by the LROC of SA

There is a prelimimary route that we will follow of about 7 500 km in
about 8 weeks.
This will be open to ANYONE IN THE WORLD WHO IS A MEMBER OF A 4WD
CLUB OF SOME SORT AND WHO OWNS A LR.
