Subject: Carburettor stuff

Seems like a lot of threads going through the digest on the Zenith carburettor
and I'm equally interested and confused when the Zenith on my 109 decides to
"act up." So, I have some observations.

1. I've found the "O" ring seal between the body and emulsion block to be attack
by whatever may be in the cheap(?) fuel I may buy when away from my regular home
station. The damn thing will swell up like an excited teenager and then cause a
rich running condition. Replacing the "O" ring will solve the problem. You might
think the bigger "O" ring would seal better, but doesn't. And, why do they call
it an emulsion block?????

2. I understand the so called reformulated gasoline actually contains an
additive called MTBE, (Methyl Teriary Butyl Ether) and it's the ether that is
causing the problem with the rubber seals etc.
Mayube someone with more organic chemistry knowledge or Zenith experience than
me can shed some light on my observation. What kind of rubber would not be
affected???

3. If the side screw adjustment is sometimes called the "mixture control" why do
the workshop manuals refer to it as "volume control screw?" I guess with a
little imagination the two labels can mean the same.

Once the Zenith mysteries are solved, we can get onto fixing the obvious LR
problems!

Subject: Servo Brakes
Date: Sat, 19 Oct 1996 15:09:29 +0100

After messing around with the brakes for a few days and getting nowhere, I
had a chat with a mechanic at a LR garage. He told me that the reason my
breaks were so heavy to press, is that there is no vacuum on the servo, so
I had a look.
Let me say at this point that the vehicle in question is a diesel.
After tracing the pipes back to the inlet manifold I noticed that where the
vacuum hose attaches there is a strange cast piece(no idea what its
called?). After anothe little chat with that mechanic, I found out that
this is supposed to have a flap(simular to a carb) in it which is operated
by the accelerator! Not in there? It seems that when the previous owner did
the engine swap from petrol to diesel, he found there was no linkage from
the accelerator to this `flap`, so he just took it out and put in a bolt!
I have now found out that these things are like gold dust and I can`t get
one.
So what I have decided to do is the make one as I have access to
engineering equipment. So what I need are either drawings or some
dimensions of the flap(It is not in my haynes manual) or any other advise
you have to offer.

Subject: Click and Clack

This morning on NPR, Click and Clack got a call from a fellow who had been
riding in Africa with a driver and mechanic in what he described as a Land
Rover. There was a mixture problem, so they took the hood (bonnet) off and
the mechanic rode on the engine with his hand over the top of the carb.

Two questions:

1. Why didn't they use duct tape instead of the mechanic's hand to cover
the carburetor?

2. If there was no duct tape in the car toolkit, was it really a Land Rover?

They use this system on the LEXUS futhechrissakes! You surely don't want
your
ROVER to sound like a LEXUS, do you?
Besides, I find that an elephant draped over the transmission tunnel does
an excellent job of sound deadening. You can use the hide for seat
covers.

Mark Hardig

P.S.Hey, just kidding, don't skin any elephants (or me for suggesting it)
If you need animal hides, use cats, They're not endangered. And cat
squalling drowns out transmission noise like nothing else.

because duct tape is a rare if available commodity in Africa, and in the
middle of the bush you usually don't carry duct tape, it is only us
pampered Americans who have the luxury of stocking our vehicles with all
of the necessary repair stuff

Yes it probably was-who says it coyuldn't have been a Land Rover, just
because it doesn't fit you idea of what should be carried in the
vehicle. In Africa Land Rovers are vehicles and simpy that. They are
used as any ordinary vehicle would be used in the US, to get from one
place to another.

According to Rene Pray, LRNA rep for the western US, the 2500 D90 to

of a 'bonus' that LRNA received from the US Dept of Trans. Because
LRNA previously produced Discos for the US market with airbags when
in fact they were not then required by DOT, LRNA received a 'credit'
 to produce 2500 substandard vehicles.

(Nice to know you can still pay more to get less :)

Don't fret, the life you loose in D90 was someone elses life saved in

Before you go to all the trouble, find out if the diesel can support this
piece. I understand that only petrol engines have vacuum at that port
and you can't use the diesel with the servo, you have to have a vacuum
accumilator or vacuum pump. Dave VE4PN

Subject: Brakes: '64 88" w/ 109" front brakes

Started looking at the front brakes on the 88" this morning. It's kind of
obvious that new brake shoes are needed.

Interesting enough: the brakes on the front were replaced at some point with
109" brakes.

On one side though, I wasn't able to adjust the brakes. Took the wheel off
and removed the drum. The cam adjuster is not turning when you turn the bolt
on the back. I can get it to turn with a little assistance from the front.

Question: Is that cam piece replaceable or will this require a
new/replacement brake anchor plate?

Thanks..

There is a '72 RR for sale here in Southern Ontario for $7000. It is in
the Pt. Robinson area. Apparently it was refurbished in '93. I haven't
called for details yet.

Any advice? Is this a good price?

Is there anyone in the area who could check it out for me?
