John Liu wrote of using a relay connecting the two battery positives
together, closed by the ignition switch.
Instead use the alternator charging light to energise the relay. On our VW
camper this is the factory set up. The charge light output from the
regulator is low until the system is charging. This prevents trying to take
starting currents of 100+ amps through the relay contacts that are designed
to carry probably no more than 20. If you want the second battery to help
starting fit a second starter solenoid and a selector switch to choose 1,2
or both solenoids for starting.

Don't know how the D90 doors are made, exactly, but when I re-did the door
trim in my IIa, I filled the void with a piece of styrofoam (closed cell
polystyrene)insulation from a building supply place. Cut it exactly to fit
with my pocket knife. I'm not sure how much it helps, because the old boy is
still pretty drafty (or is it draughty?). The stuff is really cheap. I
seem to remember 4 or 5 bucks for a 4' x 8' piece. It does take the tinny
edge off of the door slam noise.

I'm trying to unsubscribe myself from the list and the major won't let
me. My network admin changed my address from
dboehme@rad1.pcmail.ingr.com to dboehme@bestinforsg.com and because my
return address (the new one) doesn't match my original address (the old
one) it refuses to unsubscribe me. For now, I'm receiving double posts,
but shortly, the list is going to start getting those annoying "address
not found" messages.

HEEEELLLLLLLPPPP!

Thanks,
Douglas Boehme

P.S. I'm actually just trying to get rid of my old address from the list
so the "address not found" messages don't show.

Hello everyone,

I apologize for this non LR entry, but I am hoping that somebody in the list
can help me.
A friend is restoring a Rover 80 car - I'm not sure about the year model (I
think its + or - 1970).
We had one source from UK, but was not able to supply all items (some
obsolete items - like badges, hinges, rubber seals, etc.).
Anybody out there that can help, I would appreciate it very much.
UK or US supplier preferred. Kindly inform me complete address, telephone
and fax.

The frame is in good shape from what I saw. Rob's more of an expert that me.
The outriggers showed some additional bracing but we couldn't figure out why
it was done. There are stress cracks on the sides under the windows. The
rear door isn't exactly aligned but it's close. The interior is bare but
very clean. The motor smoked a bit upon starting. There's no ignition
key... just a switch. The motor is clean on the outside. Fair amount of oil
underneath. Didn't drive it.. Greg wasn't home but we did start it. 2 of
the lights on front fenders were replaced by reflectors to cover the holes.
The rear bumper is one of those diamond plate deals. It has a roll bar
attached to body work inside. That's about it off the top of my head. All
in all, it's not too bad but then again, what do I know? :-)

BTW Where you at the Crested Butte event? Meet some folks from your club but
can't remember if we were introduced or not.

Now this is a bit out of hand. My statement to you was that if
Dormobile parts become avail. I try and sell or get them sold to those
struggleing to put a real Dormobile made by Martin Walters back into shape.
Then if that doesn't work, the parts can get used for whatever anyone sees
fit. I think it is a good policy, and as the contact for the Dormobile
owners club, a healthy one. If Dormibile owners don't need the stuff... on
with the 3 door projects, yard planters, whatever, and have a great time
with them. You attitude is not appreciated, and the comments in your email
directly to me, about my lack of support for your project and me making as
much sence as the DOT and I should rethink my position in the Dormobile
owners club are out of line. I simply said, I don't know where you can get
the parts, as I keep my stuff for the needy real Dormobile owners, at least
for a while.

Subject: chipped front pully?

hello all,

my poor 1960 SII 88"... well, last weekend while replacing a front leaf
spring pin i noticed something else wrong (wouldn't you know it). the front
pulley on the block is chipped 2/3 the way around. it hasn't thrown a belt
yet, but this has me worried. i just rebuilt the engine and put it in 4
months ago. the pulley was fine then. does anyone have any suggestions as
to how this could have happened? my shocks are weak, could the front axle
have hit the pulley on a hard bounce? i thought about this, but the axle
doesn't look like it could travel that far backwards. i live in florida and
we don't have any rocks around here, so it couldn't have been that. i would
think that you could hear something like that coming apart. what do you
guys think?

Bruce I have had the exact same experience as you did from Whom I think Mr X is

HOWEVER The parts belong to him and he can keep, use or sell them at his
own whim to whomever he so desires. I understand that it is frustrating to
be in a position where you need a hard to find part but a person who has a
spare will not sell it to you because you have the wrong sort of Land
Rover. But that is his parogative and no one ever said life was fair. So
just ignore Mr X and his company and get on with your own life. You will
never come off looking good if you persue this in public.

I Have had similar if not the same problems with the same part set that you

Subject: Re[2]: Info on Split-charging system ?

There is a split charge system designed by lR, for the 110, but can be used on
any vehicle. It invloves a voltage sensitive relay that is in the charging
circuit. This relay closes only when the charge voltage is in the 13.5-14 volt
range. The voltage sensitive relay then sends power to a 70 amp relay that
connects the two batteries, allowing them both to run the vehicle, start the
vehicle, power the lights, etc,. When you start winching, running 20 zilion
watss of fog lights, or whatever, if the voltage in the sytem drops below the
13.5-14 volt level, the voltage sensitive relay opens up and takes the main
battery out of the circuit, leaving it charged up and ready for action. The
secondary battery should be a deep cylcle battery becasue it is the one that
gets drained. This system is suipposedly better than the regular split charger
units that you buy at Pep Boys or wherever, because you tend to lose some
voltage through those. A little more expensive though, I think it's about $150
US for the kit, plus a good deep cycle battery...Call RN for more info. I got
the wiring diagram but it doesn't do much good without a better
explanation...part # is ST3403M- Split Charge and Voltage Sensitive Circuit
Defender 110.

Well, we did it once again...ordered too many T-shirts. I thought that with
this *six color* design by Sand Toler, these things would fly off the

they're $15 apiece and available in all sizes except XXL's. Add $2 for

In addition to the fact that SIIA g'boxes aren't syncro'd on first & second,
there are also differences in the clutch mechanism, slave cyl., bellhousing,
shift lever, etc. These parts can be swapped, but with some work and fiddlin'.
See the Rovers North catalog for a graphic depiction. See also L. Porters
"Guide to Purchase etc. of Series I, II &III which also discusses this. I am
sure someone on this list has direct experience of using a SIII 'box in a
SIIA or vise-versa. The transfer case gears on the later boxes were helical
to cut down on noise. I think these can be swopped from one housing to
another, but only as complete gear sets. Again, see the Parts Catalog to see
which part # are the same for both. Good Luck. Have Fun. Cheers. Andy.

Yes, Mark, rumor has it that POD computers were supplied under private label
arrangements to several other companies. This was due to concern that their
name recognition could adversely effect sales. You can, however, recognize
them by several characteristics:

1. Oil spots underneath the computer.
2. Cloth wrapped insulation on the internal wiring.
3. Random and intermittent malfunction (probably not software related).
4. Negative grounding system.
5. Abundant chassis vents to let out the smoke.
6. Strange noises while operating and/or just after shut-off; snapping,
sizzling and crackling sounds which may, or may not, precede smoke.
7. Removable bit bucket which must be manually emptied by operator.

The rumor was that POD personal computers were widely used by British
Leyland and today can be found at low cost in surplus stores still packed in
cosmoline. Perhaps some of the UK LROs may be able to shed some light on
this matter. Please note that I am not affilliated in any way with any of
these firms.

Thanks, that was interesting. I've been around British cars for about forty
years and didn't know some of that. O.K. I didn't know most of it.

Thanks again,

Granny

How did you get the pulley off when you rebuilt the engine? If you used a
puller, you may have stressed the flange.
