If not please accept my apologies. I am in the process of deciding what will replace my 1988 Jeep Cherokee Larado. I do not want an Automatic transmission so I am locked out of the Grand Cherokee line due to the fact that it is simply not made with a 5 speed. I can build up a Sport but it appears to me that I will still not be able to get the features I want. This has lead me to look for better choices and have found the Discovery would be something I could be happy owning. Yesterday a paid a visit to my local dealer and they are steering towards a used 1996 Discovery SE7 they have. It appears to be in generally good shape w/about 7,500 miles on it. It has the black paint but other than that it did not seem to have anything additional to the package. The dealer has indicated that their offer of $32,900 is a steal for the vehicle and if it were new obviously that would probably be the case but I would have thought a value of more like $29,000 would have been appropriate. I really did like the front and back A/C and my wife likes having the sunroofs but other than that I think I would be perfectly happy with the basic Discovery. Am I stupid?! I like to be the only owner of my vehicles. The Jeep has about 150,000 miles on it and has served me very well but after driving and looking at the Discovery it does clearly seem to be a superior vehicle. I would be interested in anyones feedback on the value of the offer from my dealer and also feedback on the reliability and maintenance costs and ease of the vehicle. I want to be able to go where I want when I want without being held back by weather or terrain withing reason but living in Indianapolis I don't think this is as big an issue as Wyoming but I may want to live there someday too. I had this same problem with my first LR. Dont forget the seal has been in compression for qiute a time and gets very hard and when you prod it there is no give in it and you think thats the bottom of the groove. The groove is quite deep actualy. Recently I have had many question and all of them have been very well answered (AS I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO EVERYTHING THAT I ASKED FOR) so here comes another question. Whilst having my gearbox repaired I decided to have a look at the breaks. Well as soon as I removed the back drum I knew that there was trouble. The backing plate had a huge hole in it and the whole thing was rusted. The spring popped out at me when I pulled the shoes off and one was broken. (Its a wonder the car stopped at all!!). Anyway I pulled everything off and decided to have the drums machined and to get new springs and shoes. A few weeks later I come back with a backing plate, new shoes, machined drums and new springs. BUT, when I try to put the things back together they don't seem to sit properly. The LR is a series 3 stage 1 and I think that I might be putting the springs on incorectly onto the shoes. There are 3 holes at the bottom of the shoe and 2 up the top. When I put the springs on to the holes that make the springs strech the least the shoes fall off, when I put them onto the next set of holes, the shoes are sprung too tight and ptotrude outwards. WHAT am I doing wrong. Thanks for the help in advance. Mirek Miroslav Belik Email: M.Belik@UWS.EDU.AU UWS, Macarthur Phone: 018-028-708 or 61 2 823 9445 P.O. The tailgate is in good condition and is Land Rover (light) green. It was painted three years ago and used about one month since then. For the person wondering about ordering springs from overseas, I just ordered a complete front set with all the stuff from Merseyside which is now called LR Supermarket. I am very pleased with their service. I received a FAX conformation within three hours of my phone call to them, and within eight hours I received a second FAX with the flight numbers, days and times of arrival in Canada. The price was very good. All the parts necessary to do the replacement on both sides including chassis bushes came to 182 pounds delivered in Canada. Shipping was 115 pounds. Each spring was 24.890. I don't understand the 3 place decimal but maybe that is how they show shillings or something. "U" bolts were 2.250 and shackle pins were .842 for example. I could have had door to door service for an extra 40 pounds, but the International airport at Winnipeg is only about 30 miles form here so I chose that route and besides it allowed me to do my own clearing with the import office of the Federal Govt which I thinks saves a bit more. Besides the dished bonnet, I am looking for the wire screens for over the lights and a used OD if someone has one for sale or trade. I have lots of Diesel, Ser II, and IIA parts for trade. I think the people who have dealt with me will tell you the parts I sell or trade are like new or if they have some blemish, I will tell you before you put your money down. Seven of my 8 Land Rovers had one. Strangely enough my present one doesn't have one. I think on this one, a very late IIA that has lots of Ser III on it except the padded dash, the bit they did pad and because they installed a very large heater, there wasn't room for the throtle so they left it off. I am about to do the chassis bushes on my 88. I suspect I will use a threaded rod with a nut on the back and a deep socket on the front and using another nut, draw the bush out into the deep socket. Has anyone found a better way to do this. I see in the LRO Magazine, back page, Bearmach sells a sliding hammer with their composite bushes to do the job. Even if you started off with the front and rear propshafts aligned, the diff would allow them to rotate at slightly different velocities. Part time 4WD, though, would only be used off road, so the loose surface becomes your differential. -- David Olley ............................................................... Date: Mon, 02 Sep 1996 11:40:28 +0100 From: David Olley at New Concept <newconcept@tcp.co.uk> Subject: The head came off! Brute force always wins! Oil on top of the pistons probably just indicates very worn valve guides. When you get the head down to the machine shop, have it worked thoroughly - surface skimmed, exhaust seats milled and fitted with hard inserts (then you can run on unleaded) and new guides and valves fitted. You will then find that your engine will run like never before - and no clouds of smoke on start up. Cost is well worth it, and you will lose a lot less oil. By the way, when replacing the head, do not use the copper gasket. Use the later "non retorque" type (fibre faced). These do not require retorquing after running, and are not prone to sticking. Under no circumstances use any compound or oil on the faces when fitting. -- David Olley ...............................................................
