I already have sought out a couple opinions on this but...
Being things are so very quiet here I thought I would get some more
opinions about replacement swivel balls.
Genuine vs Aftermarket........ anyone have any opinions regarding this or
anyone with firsthand experience??
I plan on keeping this lla for a long time and tend to think the
aftermarket ones with gaiters will be just fine.
Comments??

Well if you follow the logic of those cretins in the Calif. DMV you've
got a '66 because that's the age of the engine and that's all that
counts. Of course, the other view is, if you follow the logic of the
cretins at the Calif. DMV the year is determined by the VIN# and you've
got a '69 and that's all they look at. Just as well you're not in
Calif. :)

This might be worth checking into deeper; I read in one of the 4WD
magazines recently a test of OME springs on a Jeep Wrangler. So it's not
just Japanese leaf-sprung vehicles. Try calling OME directly.

Hey Bill..

Looks like the list split - on the first stage out of Dodge. I tried sending

Thursday was the last day I saw any messages - less than 10 at that.

So two questions... Is the Major dead? and exactly what address should be

What is the Long Trail T/A tread pattern like? (I am familiar with the

Hi all

Took the Rover on its maiden voyage this weekend. Maryland
Combined Training Event at Jackson's Hole Farm in Northern
Baltimore County, Maryland. It really performed outstandingly.
In and out of 4wd, up hills, down and through creeks and muck. What a
pleasure to have it out and about.

Question though: Occasionally when shifting out of 4 hi to 2wd hi, none
of the gears would engage, no grinding, nothing. I'd shift back into 4 hi
and all would work then back to 2 hi and all would work again. Is this a
normal idiosyncrasy or does it indicate a problem?

Thanks

Sounds like the transfer box is in neutral. Happens to me sometimes
and I don't think it's a problem, like you say it usually goes in
second try.

I got the Atlantic British Swivel Ball replacement kit, which was 459 bucks US.
I got two new balls(!!) new top pins, bottom bearings and Railko bushes with
thrust washers, new halfshaft bearings, and new halfshaft oil seals and swivel
seals as well as gaiters. I found the quality just from appearance to be okay
except for the gaiters which seemd a little sloppy, but they worked okay. The
only thing I didn't like was that I couldn't use the new halfshaft bearings
since the inside race is a seperate piece that is difficult to remove from the
halfshaft and the new ones had a slightly smaller O.D. than the old ones. That
was ok since the old ones were still good. I also couldn't get the pre-load low
enough even using ALL the shims they gave me, but I guess i could have used some
of the old ones. I just figured things would loosen up over time and that since
the steering felt ok that I would be alright. (I was). Other than having to
tighten the swivel ball bolts once I haven't had any problems. I guess it'd be
nice to have the "security" of GEnuine Parts in such a critical area, but I
didn't have the cash, so... I'm still holding onto the old ones for repair at
some later date.

As near as I can figure I have mounted a newish triangle mount and clamp (both used
but "recent") and also a newer distributor to cam connector. I'll have to compare
them closely with the originals which are definitely '65s. However, both the
original and replacements do have the blade/notch assembly on the drive rather than
the older spline assembly.

By the way, yes I do have a parts catalog - but not at work :).

I wasn't aware that there were different blade "things"; or are you saying I need a
different vertical drive mounted to the cam?.
This definitely sounds like it's contributing to the problem (probably the primary
problem) since the Turner block is definitely newer than the old one.

Guess its' time to say hello to the UPS delivery man again :)

Cheers,

Jeremy

P.S. One of the benefits of restoring a land rover is that I know the UPS delivery
man by name now and he schedules his runs to try and deliver in the early evening
when I'm home. Makes me wonder just what percentage of that particular UPS run I
account for :(

I've tried "help", "index", etc. in the main body of the message sent to
both "majordomo@Land-Rover.Team.Net" and "Majordomo@playground.Sun.COM". I
also sent the messages from both my AOL and Compuserve accounts... When I
sent these messages, they were not bounced back, but I've never recieved a

I haven't recieved the digest since 5-1-96, and it was intermittant
(sometimes got it, sometimes didn't) for the couple of weeks prior... The
problems all started when I unsubscribed (went on vacation), and subscribed
when I got back....

I have been able to post (I think????)

Any suggestions?

My theory is that the LRO realtime list is fine and we are all standing
around wondering what's wrong with it instead of posting messages. If all
the "what's going on" messages can get through, surely messages with LR

Hmm. This is getting a bit odd. When I noticed the problem I did estimate the
engagment of the blade by looking at the rotor and it seemed a rather less than
1/4". However, the distributor seemed not to be seating completely into the
block by a comparable amount. I attributed this to the deformation of the
clamp and clamp area; hence my suspicion that this was the primary problem.

Maybe I have the thicker base (triangular) piece, but I don't think so. This
would seem a bit strange since it is listed as only used on the spline drive
type which I never had.

To answer your question on the gaskets, yes I'm currently using the thin
version so that can be ruled out.

'Guess I'll find out tomorrow (when the new distributor is scheduled for
delivery) and the weekend when I'll realistically have time to try fitting it.

Thanks,

Jeremy

P.S. Hope you don't mind multiple copies. I figured others might be
