ACK. [To'ed to lro, Cc'ed to Mike].

ObLRO: the clunk in my drive train has been getting worser and
worserer over the last few weeks, and even turned into a clunky
rattle when driving over bumps in the road. Ho ho, I think, could be
a suspension problem, not just sloppy U-joints. So I finally get
around to checking it and whadayaknow one of the U bolt nuts has
undone itself and the axle is flopping back and forth.

Before retightening I checked the rear axle alignment and it seems to
be pointing slightly to the right. That would explain the slight
left hand pull on the steering that I've been living with all these
years. Now there's a small amount that the axle can be moved on the
spring before tightening the Ubolts down, but not enough to line my
axle up correctly. Strange, I think, maybe the springs aren't quite
symmetrical and one is on backwards. So I dropped both springs and
they line up to within 1-2mm. Then I measured the distance between the
spring hangers. Aha! the right side is approx 10mm longer than the
left. Well I'm not going to fix that on a sunny Sunday afternoon, so
back on went the springs and I'll just continue to put up with the
steering.

All's well that ends.

Subject: Dormobile wanted

Hi All,

This message is intended primarily for the UK and other Euro LROs.

My family and I are planning to tour the UK this summer, starting in
mid-June, and would like to do it in a Land Rover Dormobile or Carawagon.
Obviously we'll need to purchase a vehicle in good working condition
since I don't want to spend my holiday rebuilding various bits, and I'm
sure my family feels even more strongly about this than I do.

I'm looking for a vehicle built during the 1960's, 1970 or 1971. I would
go for diesel petrol power. I've been told that Carawagons were not supplied
as diesel powered Land Rovers, but there is at least one diesel Carawagon
in the United States that I am aware of, but it may well be a later
conversion. Such a conversion would be fine, as long as it was done well.
Either LHD or RHD would be acceptable.

I would appreciate any information on available vehicles from owners or
from anybody who knows about one that is or might be available. Thanks
for any help you can provide.

Rgds,

Walter Swain

Mike,

I received this message from the list, but then you're not a whole lot of
miles away. It could be possible that the list has been very quiet
because a lot of the prolific correspondents are students who are now
cramming for exams. Maybe a Molson truck got bogged down in the OVLR mud
and our northern friends have been preoccupied. At any rate, most of the
messages I've seen have been about no messages coming through. Seems like
a paradox. I'm sending this reply to the list with a cc to Mike.

Somewhere between St. Kitts and St. Lucia I have managed to lose a message from
someone in the US who wanted info on the LT230 transfer box oil splash disc
modification. The '94 model 90s would have the LT77 gearbox, for which this mod
is not relevant. The '95 model 90s and Discoverys with the R380 (manual) box may
need the modification, but as it is only recommended for vehicles with less than
12,000 miles there are probably few that still qualify.

I think the enquiry referred to an LT77, but get in touch if you want more
details.

Hi all

Took the Rover on its maiden voyage this weekend. Maryland
Combined Training Event at Jackson's Hole Farm in Northern
Baltimore County, Maryland. It really performed outstandingly.
In and out of 4wd, up hills, down and through creeks and muck. What a
pleasure to have it out and about.

Question though: Occasionally when shifting out of 4 hi to 2wd hi, none
of the gears would engage, no grinding, nothing. I'd shift back into 4 hi
and all would work then back to 2 hi and all would work again. Is this a
normal idiosyncrasy or does it indicate a problem?

Thanks

Subject: Frame Replacement Log, 17

So close and yet so far...

Lets see... First order of business was putting the top back on, which
went without any problems. That made it really look like a vehicle
again.

I took a day off, and ran around town to get some things done. First,
I went to a shop that specializes in british cars, mostly rebuilding
'50s and '60s race cars, and had them make up a reservoir to clutch
master cylinder line (no one else had fittings), since I can't seem to
find one anywhere. That wasn't too bad, only double the cost of a new
one... :-(

Then I brought my wings to a welder and had them do some repairs. I
needed to have the mudshield mounts fixed, and a few holes patched.
They did an ok job, for $95.

So at that point, I was ready to work on the hydraulics. The clutch I
was able to bleed without too many problems (I think). It feels
normal.

The brakes were a bit trickier (of course). The vacuum bleeder helped,
but there is still air in the sytem someplace. But, I think I have
enough brake to get me to a shop and have them pressure bled. I don't
have the time & materials right now to make a pressure bleeder myself.

After that, I wanted to check the cooling system for leaks and flush
it. Doing that, I discovered my first bug: I forgot to tighten down
the nut on the temp sensor. Grrr. In order to get on that nut, I had
to pull the radiator again. This time, I got all wet.

New clamps on the fuel filler and a new breather hose...

Ok, radiator back on, checked - everything now ok, cooling system
filled, walk three blocks for a couple of gallons of gas, a visual
check for anything obvious, battery back in and checked ("remember its
upside down because we're in the other hemesphere" says my wife - her
way of remembering positive ground :-) ), look for smoke - none, key
on, look for smoke - still none, gas guage bounces, hit the starter
button - it cranks, good sign, check again for anything obvious, crank
it again - see through the vent fuel now in the in-line filter, crank
it a little more and VROOOOOOM! it comes to life! :-)

But, I've got the charge light doing wierd stuff, so I shut it down. I
go take a look and right away I spot a loose wire to the voltage reg.,
reattach that, and fire it up again. Everything normal on the inside -
oil pressure guage shows 50-60 lbs at idle. Then I go out and do an
inspection while its running, everything looks dandy, except the
exhaust looks a little blacker than usual, so it seems to be running
rich. I can worry about that later.

:-)

With that step, it was prepare for the first test drive. That ment
getting the wings re-attached, the mudshields installed, the lights
checked out, etc. I got as far as getting one wing nearly mounted
before I discovered that I've got the wrong mudshields. Alas, I bought
Series III mudshields by mistake and of course they don't fit. Grrrr!
And if I would have realised this eariler, I could have had the welder
move the mounts. Damn Damn Damn! Of course I bought the shields from
England, so returning them would be a major pain in the bum. I didn't
know they were wrong because there was literally nothing left of the
old ones but little bits of rust.

Anyone want to buy a pair of brand new, genuine late IIa or III
mudshields? I'd like to get nearly cost for them, so I can get new
ones for an early IIa.

So, I'm stuck for a couple more days. I don't want to mount the wings
because I need to drill out mounting holes in the new attachments that
were welded and I want to be sure they match the shields.

I kept myself busy putting the floor down and generally doing
little things. It was really cold and wet yesterday, about 40 degrees,
and my gumption waned.

One more installemnt should do it...

Could someone tell me if I have now a '69 with a body and motor of a
'66, or a '66 with a frame & bulkhead of a '69? I think, if I go by
weight, it would still be a '66 with '69 and '96 fighting it out for
second...

Hypothesis: The great majority of the LRO subscribers are on the
digest. We have seen many digest readers complaining. Despite
a great lack of volume recently, methinks the real-time list is
still intact, though the digest has a severe headache from being

Hello everybody,

Here are two questions for specialists :

1) Can anyone explain me if there is a good reason or not to put
larger tires than one's provided by default. For example,
putting some 235/..R16 in place of 205/80R16...

2) I read in a French 4X4 magazine that tires pressure
recommanded by constructors are always minimized and must be
increased by at least 1,25%. Is this affirmation true ?
Then, do I have to continue using following pressures for my
Disco (205/80R16 BFG Long Trail T/A) :
    FRONT Wheels 1,9 Bars
    REAR Wheels 2,6 Bars
(Sorry but I don't have Lbs values)

Thanks for the input.

The realtime LRO list seems to be intact, but volume dropped very suddenly
about two weeks ago. I also (used to?) subscribe to the the RRO list, but
haven't gotten more than a handful of notes from it over the same period. I
tried resubscribing but the major said I was already subscribed. Volumes
from the three lists (West Coast, LRO, RRO) used to be about 80-100 a day.
Now it's about 30-40.

I'm going to violate protocol and cross-post this just to see if I get my
own responses back. What I expect to get are error messages from invalid or
unreachable addresses. Something is seriously wrong.

No cheers.

Subject: Bizarre Lucas Distributor Diagnosis

Well, I figured out over the weekend why (or at least one reason why)
Mathilda wasn't starting.

It seems that the Lucas distributor has become sufficiently worn to
develop a rather strange problem. The base of the distributor where the
clamp attaches to maintain the position relative to the block has become
slight distorted over the years (a few hairline cracks are visible).
The clamp itself is also slightly distorted. The end result of the
combined distortions was to create a situation where the shaft of the
distributor was apparently only just locking into place in the block.
Upon tightening the clamp after adjusting the distributor position the
distributor rose sufficiently away from the block, due to a combined
tapering effect, to dislodge the rotor shaft. Being dislodged the rotor
was free to spin at will (or more accurately not :( ); hence no
ignition.

One more bizarre thing to consider when diagnosing old parts.

Cheers,

Jeremy

My theory is that the realtime list is working, but the digest isn't. As
most people are on the digest, not the realtime list, that would explain
the dramatic drop in traffic, with some of us still able to get "10 or 15
e-mails per day", some of which probably include crys for help from cut
off digesters.

Of course, I dunno what to do about it.

won't waste mailer bandwidth by selling myself, I'll just say that our URL is as
follows: http://www.OverlandMotors.com If you don't have graphical web access,
send me some e-mail and I'll tell you all about it.

I announce this at the great risk of being flamed. I would only like to say
that the only commericial use I'm putting this list to (beyond this beginning
post) is to add a short sig file to my mail....I hope not to annoy anyone
further. If you would like to recieve commercial plugs via e-mail, let me know
and I'll put you on our list.

Regards,
Eric Zipkin
