Subject: Parting out series III

I going ahead and doing a engine, tranny, transfer case swap in my '73 LR 88
Series III... I will basically be replacing everything from the pumpkins
forward.. I currently have a 2/25 L petrol with weber carb, stock 4-spd
tranny, and stock transfer case. I am located in Denver, Colorado.

The transmittion and transfer case are in good shape.. The clutch is about
gone as well as the master cylinder for it. The engine has some "unknown"
(never took it in to be checked) problems. There is water contamination in
the oil, and the oil pressure is low. I've never checked the compression or
had it checked for bad heads. The PO told me it has had the "unleaded" heads
installed reciently (possible because the gaskets are new). It has a weber
carb. It's odo reads 68,000 (assumed 168,000), but I'm not sure of the
history other than it was originally purchased in Virgina. The radiator is
also going to come out... Basically, everything from the axle pumpkins
forward (including driveshafts)

Make an offer, I'm willing to trade for some other parts I want... Soft top,
half gate tailgate, push bar, salsbury axles, axle lockers, winch, new front
seats, passenger side mirror, new window tracks, tire carrier parts for rear
door (has plate & holes, but no hardware) or whatever you think I might
need...

FYI: I'm swapping in a Chevy 4.3L "vortec", fuel injected, V6. Also I'm
 putting in a 700r4 4-spd auto transmittion w/ B&M shift kit, and an NP208
transfer case.... Should be a screamer when finished ;-) The time table is
that the actual swap should happen May 20 and finish mid/end June... The
engine is still running in the car, and can be removed at any time in the
next couple of weeks. I can make arrangements if you want to drive the car
with the stock engine in it...(provided your in the Denver area or know
someone)...

Try to e-mail me direct (I've had problems recieving the digest for the last
week)

Thanks,
Chris Fisher

Subject: Leaking / cracked D110 axle casing
From: rc@fourfold.ocunix.on.ca (Robin Craig)

There was a chap from Oz on the other day saying he had a crack in the
axle casing near the diff housing.

I would suggest the following actions,
1 see if LR themselves, depending on age of vehicle, will givie you a new
casing on good will basis with seals etc and change iut yourself.

2 If you have any intention of welding yourself I'll give you some advice
from my own view point as a welder and fabricator and machin shop type.

I would remove axel from vehcile and dissemble.
Wash and clean casing, then maganflux the crack to see how far it goes
and also if there are more.

The preparation prior to welding is very important if you ever want to
have a structurally sound and leak proof weld. Any surface that has had
hydro carbons on them are a potential nightmare to seal by welding
because the hydro carbons cause porosity in the weld leading to pin holes
and leaks.

So once the length of the crack has been established I would drill the
ends of the crack with a 1/8th diam drill. Then usiing a die grinder vee
the crack out. Next using a small diam arc welding rod such as a 6010 or
6011 do a root pass in the joint. This is type of rod used for pipe
welding root passes. Then using the die grinder again clean out the vee
of the wld removing flux and debris, cet it shiny clean.

Then using a 7018 electrode do your cover pass in the joint. Voila 100%
success guaranteed if I was doing it!

Robin

Subject: AC Dripping

My AC is dripping onto the floor of my 1993 LWB. I poked around and found a
3/4" hose hanging down. Is this supposed to be connected to overflow
outside? If so where do I hook the thing up? Or is this more or a serious
problem with the evaporator?

Thanks!!

Our dealer - has replaced parts that rusted (e.g., tailgate and rear bumper).
I did not get the impression that this was at all unusual. Additionally,
they have taken care of sections of body panels -- that are aluminum and not
rusting -- "under the warranty" when touch up work has needed to be done.
Maybe they are allowed a bit more flexibility than some shops because of the
volume that they do. Don't quite know...

Ask your dealer and you may be pleasantly surprised....just don't get my guys
in trouble!

Take care,

Hank
