This weekend is the BRLRC Mayday rally in Parkersburg WVA. Over 40 of
Solihulls finest are slated to attend. Alas, the friends and family members I

this wasnt my first Saturday off in months, the ingrates). So I am extending

Bingo. You have too much gas coming into the carb for some reason.
Stuck (open) float valve is the most likely possibility, but there
are probably other valves on a Solex that could leak an inopportune
    times.

At idle it will not run as it is being flooded. At wider throttle
positions, the excess gas as a percentage of the total gas is not as
bad (plus if it's a leaking float valve, you might actually be
consuming some of the gas that would otherwise be leaking over.)
But it's still too rich so you have no power. Adding choke makes it
*worse* meaning it was already too rich. Starting works because it
isn't pushing gas past the float valve (or wherever) in earnest until
    the engine is running again.

Subject: Re: D90 Accessories(top 10)

Here's my list:

Top Ten Accessories:

1 Good first aid kit (and the knowledge of how to use it!)
2 Emergency supplies (ranging from a space blanket, some matches and a
couple of powerbars, up to a full kit with sleeping bag, stove,
foodstuffs, etc.)
3 Good CB
4 Tools and fix-it bits (incl. duct tape, hoses, etc.)
5 spare parts (what you need to get home; a new starter can wait)
6 highlift (or other) jack and lugnut thing (and spare, of course)
7 Spare gas tank/jerry cans
8 winch
9 roof rack
10 Snorkel

As you may have guessed, my number one priority is staying alive in an
emergency. Going from survival/abandon vehicle (1-3), to repairing the
vehicle/getting unstuck (4-8) to added comfort (9), to just too cool
(10).

YMMV, but I wouldn't recommend venturing out anywhere without at least #1
& #2. Vehicles can be replaced; people can't.

advantages of being on the realtime list, I guess.

Beware of epoxies. They tend not to expand and contract due to temperature
the same way as glass and can cause the glass to crack. I've tried RTV
with no success (different British car). Wouldn't hold - too much torque
for a small contact patch. I ended up using glue for auto mirrors found at
the local auto store.

Clayton, I can sympathize. Friday I was intending to take my Series III up
to the Joe Lucas Mendo Not a Rallye when I found that I'd lost a bolt on the
right door hinge and then the interior rear-view broke off. Ed is mistaken
I'm afraid. No it didn't fall off the windshield. The shaft (looks like
painted pot metal) just broke out of the little plate that screws into the
head-liner over the windscreen. Neat. Just fatigue I guess.

On my Series IIa I had a similar problem but the mirror itself broke when it
fell off. So I went to the local Ford dealer cause I liked the mirrors I'd
seen in an F250 pickup. Cost $29 (19 years ago) and used a cyno-acrylic
(like super glue) to attach it to the wind screen center frame. Worked very
well. I may try something like that again.

I read somewhere that most epoxy formulas will eventually be broken down by
exposure to ultra-violet; probably not a good choice for this application.
I think you might want to try cleaning all the 'sticky' stuff off to get a
clean hard surface and then use some cyno-acrylic stuff to reattach it.

Good luck,
Gerry

Subject: Quiet day on the list...

WHATS going on, is everybody just feeling quiet today? Or are we all
actually busy working? I'm dying to get to work on the Green Car but
I've decided to hold off until I find a place to live. That means
probably this weekend or early next week. I'd like to have a rolling
chassis by the end of May. This of course does not include rebuilding
the gearbox, which I have decided to attempt. I finally got a hold of
the chap who is going to repair my bulkhead, so that makes me feel a
little less apprehensive. I hope this isn't the only message that
comes over today, its boring enough around here without having to read
     my own drivel...

Oh yes, a sighting. Finally saw the SIIa pickup that I saw once in
Arlington VA. Its a SWB, with 9.00x16 tires and pick up cab, with an
18-wheeler style "air(?)" horn attached to the front left wing. The
bulkhead and breakfast, as well as springs and exposed chassis parts
were encrusted with rust. They still felt fairly solid, just surface
pitted due to lack of paint. looked like it'd spent some time in a
very suny climate. The truck sat nicely and the springs and chassis
looked good ansd solid. Door tops and footwells were toast. Very cute,
checked under the hood and found spiderwebs around most of the
components and NO coolant in the radiator. Sidelights were gone, and
the bumper was held on by two bolts that were just sitting in the
holes. Color was VERY faded blue, almost white, with 1966 Virginia
tags. Probably be a good restoration project for somebody that has a
bulkhead and alot of patience. Or a good beater, if it runs...I almost
     left a note...

Hi all,
Awhile back someone was talking about stripping paint off steel parts by
soaking the parts overnight in a solution of lye or lime and water. I
can't find the file now and I need to strip paint from a bunch of smaller
parts in the next few days.

If anyone remembers this could they please pass the info along to me?
