Subject: Power Brake Booster

As a legacy of my MGB days I still get catalogs in the mail. A recent
Victoria British catalog MG.30, lists a Lockheed Remote Replacement Servo
Kit for $359. It looks v. similar to the remote servos my old Rover 2000TC
had. I post this because it will allow owners of the old, non power boosted
brake Series LR to add a servo to their brake system w/o replacing the master
cylinder. Whether this is cheaper than retro fitting the dual circuit power
brakes from a later vehicles I dont know. I do know that the dual system on
my old '71 SIIA saved my butt once, when one of the orig. front brake fllex
hoses was rubbed through by the edge of the front wheel rim. I replaced all
the hoses then and routed them properly after that episode.Proceed with
 caution. Cheers. A. Blackley

Subject: 1/4 ton trailers

Manuals for M-100 and M-416 1/4 t trailers are available from Portrayal
Press, P.O. Box 1190, Andover, NJ, 07821. I believe the M-416 was the one
used with the M-151. The M-416 manual was $12 (reproduction). Their catalog
lists orig. or repro manuals for virtually every US mil. vehicle or
accessory. They also have LR books, manuals plus military history books. I
believe I saw Robin Craig's M-100 at the Rovers Inn in 1994. It is almost
identical to my neighbors WW2 American Bantaam jeep trailer. I offered to buy
my neighbors but he wouldnt sell, but did direct me to a surplus store in
Lancaster, Ohio which had about 50 M-416s released by the National Guard
(back in Nov. 1994). I found a nice 1978 M-416 with hydraulic surge brakes
for $329. These things probably cost Uncle Sugar 10 times that amount. The
drawbacks with these are: requires a pintle hitch (not a prob., I have one
built up for the box receiver on my 83 RR), the elec. are 24V mil. (I removed
the orig. lights and replaced them with the hardware store variety, and ran a
sep. plug harness under the frame. I left the orig. wiring intact for later
use or resale), and there is not a rear tailgate, as on the original WW2 one.
Nonetheless I use mine to haul topsoil, brush, camping gear , etc. If anyone
needs a copy of some specific procedure I can copy it from my manual, but i'd
prefer not to copy the whole thing. E-mail me. Cheers. Andy Blackley

Hello all,

I posted this before under another header, but I expect people that read
that one
to have deleted this... Thanks for the answers on ignition timing by the way.

This must surely sound familiar to someone:
When cleaning my airfilter I found out there was only 0,3 litre of oil inside.
After cleaning the gaze filter with petrol it took a little less then a
litre to fill
the filterbowl to the mark. Now, a couple of months later the top part of
the inside
of the Zenith carb is covered with a thin greasy black layer. There is some
oil in the
rubber hose from the filter to the carb too. Is this normal? Should I put in
less oil then
suggested by the manual? Or is this because I drive shorter distances and use
the choke more often in winter? Or is it high revs that cause this?

Thanks for any advise, Jan.

Subject: Re: zenith vs. rochester

----------------------------- Begin Original Text -----------------------

The Zenith carb is the best carb for the 4-cyl series motor. It is reliable,
gives decent performance as long as the rest of the motor is up to snuff, and

gives the best economy - also runs the smoothest. No contest between
Rochester. Rochester notorious for washing down cylinder walls w/excess gas -

among other evils...

----------------------------- End Original Text -----------------------------

That does happen if you leave it jetted for a 6 cylinder engine. But if you
replace the 56 jet with a 50 jet your economy goes up and you are no longer
dumping all the extra petrol into the cylinders.

I think the ever popular one venturi Webber is the worst of the bunch though.
Compare its venturi size with a stock Solex or Zenith carb (which is
considered minimal carburation anyway). The Webber's venturi is way smaller
meaning less air fuel mixture can get into the cylinder. This means less HP.
I also understand that unlike the Rochested that comes jetted too rich, the
Webers come jetted too lean and have been implicated in some valve burnings
by people who have bolted them on and drove.

For a Rochester, a #50 main jet is very close (some people say #48 but I
think its not quite enough for high rev smooth running)

Does anyone know the proper jets for a Weber?

Hi All,
I'm picking up a new Epson Greeen Disco next month in Atlanta GA
and then driving to Fairbanks Ak. There is no dealer in Fairbanks so I'm
wandering if people could send me a list of factory flaws they encountered
so I can have the vehicle inspected for the same before leaving the dealer.
For example, I think I've heard some poeple say that the rear door leaked
on some discos. If anyone could send me the problems they encountered I'd
appreciate it.

I don't think you will be able to register a homebuilt/kit car as a Land
Rover 109. Rather it would be registered as a "reconstructed vehicle" or
something similar depending on state. I've also heard of several states
including Calif. using the date of engine for emmision requirements.

There is a rubber hose running from the valve cover to the carb if that is
what you mean. It looks original.
In the middle of the hose is an aluminium thing with a flat top.
It definitively is using oil...
Are you suggesting it is oil from the breather on top that is making my carb
black inside? Where does the pcv system go normally?

You have to fit a new piece of glass, which is laminated with the
heating element between the panes. The element is similar to a
heated rear window, but the wires are much finer and hard to see
when you look at the glass - just as well really.

There is slight flaring of oncomming headlamps at night but you soon
get used to it. The benefits are amazing though, you can drive in
the rain without a squeegie in your left hand and freezing fog
is no longer a total nightmare.

I can't remeber the cost now, but I thought it was reasonable, but
not cheap. Well worth it though.

I got mine from Craddocks, but it was made by tripplex (SP?)so your
local tripplex agent should be able to get one.

There are just 2 wires to connect (live and earth funnily enough) and
it is no more complicated to fit than a normal screen.

NOTE: I occasionally get notes sent to my old address at vnet.ibm.com.
This address is not really valid anymore and I am surprised the mail
gets through. I don't get into bother or anything if it is used but
there is a chance that someday it will be stopped and the note will
not arrive.

I only have two left over after filling my needs. They are currently

These are the 5" long jobbies in yellow, no spare greens at the moment.

For those of you who dont know, the packaging of the "Matchbox Originals
" series of toys is different here in Canada than in the US. We have
bi-lingualism non just about every product here.

So if you are a toy buff and want some of these I can get them for you,
as and when I see them around.

It is only the card that is affected not the little box thatit is on top
of.

In case you are wondering which one I am talking about it is number 12

So I guess the thing to do is store the cars in a garage and be very careful
not to scratch the paint. I guess the person who had a D110 for sale on the
list a while back who's car spent a chunk of its life carefully stored on
jackstands was just maximizing his return on his portfolio. Maybe the
Farrari and Jag investers are starting to deversify their car portfolios.

People invest in desirable low production cars all the time. Maybe in
another five or ten years the best US spec D110s will be stored in a climate
controlled environment.

Increasingly glad I don't have one so I don't have to worry about value vs
use

This is essentially a '52 with covered Brockhouse trailer (according to SI
Club Newsletter), even though the box says 1948. It is based on the castings
for the Dinky 1948 SI. If you worry about minutate some of the details may be
off. It is a very nice looking model though.
I obtained mine from the SI Club a year ago, who manged to purchase the LR
seperately from the set. They sold all rather quickly. Usually they are sold
as part of a set of 6.

BTW, I purchased a Dinky Mersey Tunnel SI in mediocre to reasonable condition
a week ago at a show in Maryland. Only LR at the show.
