Subject: starter just spins

What I really hate is when, after the motor just spins, you pull the motor
out and the gear and other bits off the end of the motor are missing.
It took a week to fish out all the bits!  Used magnets, wire, etc...
Too lazzy to remove the engine.

Subject: FC101 campervan conversion

I'd really like to hear from anyone who has seen, used, or even 
undertaken a campervan conversion of the FC101 battlefield ambulance.

I've previously converted a VW Kombi back in '84 and then took it across 
the Sahara from The Gambia via Mali, Niger, and Algeria in '90...  
interesting...

I now would like to construct something a little more able to reach the 
parts most campervans cannot, and I've been think pretty seriously about 
the FC101 ambulance.  It seems that I can purchase an ex-military vehicle 
in the UK, originally manufactured in '72 (???) for about 5000 pounds 
sterling, but what would I then be letting myself in for?

14MPG; less that saluibrious front seats; panoramic views; practically unstoppable 
driving; oodles of space in the rear....

Hi Hank.

I have my second series III 109 STW with a 2.25 litre petrol engine in it. 
I have tried driving a brand new V8 once, but only for a short ride in a 
military practice area. It was enough time to make me love that engine though.

The 2.25 litre engine is a no-nonsense engine built of the parts that make a 
petrol engine run and nothing else. It is not very powerful but very sturdy and 
will take the car through anything, but not neccesarily very fast. It has done 
so for quite some time now.

I'll advise you like this:

If you want power, go for a V8.
If you plan on making repairs yourself and you're not a wizard when it comes to 
motor theory, go for the straight 4 (that's what I do).
If you plan on making repairs yourself and you're a wizard when it comes to 
motor theory, go for the V8.
If you have your car repaired by someone who will charge you for it, well maybe 
the straight 4 is cheaper, I don't know really.

That's my opinion, I hope you can use it.

It isn't ... if you look real hard you can find them with Honda Crossroad written
where it should say Land Rover Discovery!
