.I always wave to Series Land Rovers, but they hardly ever wave back either.

I NEVER wave to Landrovers.
They're driven by (hhhhhk ptttt) FARMERS!

Wouldnt wave to yuppiescum in SloaneWangeWovas or Recoverys either

I have my pride.

Behave, people! I dont see any flaming on this list. I see a bit of banter adn
a couple of folk with ulcers. And a helluva lot of useful information - often
coming from teh same sources as teh banter.

You want to see flaming? Checkout rec.motorcycles, where it's done by
professionals. The Landrover list is a much kinder gentler place.

So before you're blood pressure blows your hat off, check whether what you
are whining about can be interpreted humourously...........If not, c'est la
vie. (For ignorant colonials, that's Italian - we're cosmopolitan over here.)

YES! This is what it's all about. Pull out the engine yourself. Smear grease
and oil over yourself like war paint. Grease back your hair with Waxoyl! Be
one with your machine..

WHAT! Grease and Oil on your flywheel. Wayward grease and oil in a Land
Rover! Un-heard of. Doesn't happen.. Never. We can't have rumors like this
being spread around..

Pardon me a second..... I've just been informed that I may not partake of
the happy sauce for the remainder of the evening... :(

OK.. since the flywheel is just a big chunk of steel, just degrease it.
Gunk, Kerosene, or what have you. Of course, the real important part is the
face where the clutch disk mates up with. After your done scraping the years
of accumulated grime off, check it out. Is it scored or gouged? Since you've
got it out, why not take it to your local machine shop and see if it needs
to be re-surfaced?

There's a good reason.. We, of the Series persuasion, hardly ever wash our
trucks.. (There *are* a few exceptions... degenerates all). As a result of
this it has become increasingly difficult over the years to determine the
parentage of oncoming traffic. Rather than risk the embaressment caused by
mistaking some mundane Toyota or Ford for the elegant, yet robust Range
Rover, we choose not to wave at all..

Or maybe it's just that we have too many knobs and levers to play with (no
comments from you, Maloney) and don't have a free hand to wave with??

RR tyres:
There seems to be net.interest at the moment, so here's another pearl:
Did you know you can get larger tyres on a 2-door RR than on a 4-door?
(Pause for sound of some US drivers thumbing onwards past BFG 33inch page).

Incidentally whilst on the 2/4 door thing, did you know that much
better mpg is available on the two door?

There's no disclaimer on these pearls; you can freely cast them amongst
your friends and they'll just suppose you're right;-)

Cheers,
Steve. 79RR, exV8Lightweight, '70Beetle, 24vCosworth Scorpio, pushbike.

BTW, was it this list where someone asked on the pro's and con's of RR
diffs vs. o/d for Series Landies? - Get both if you have a V8
transplant, otherwise get the o/d as you won't want to lose 1st low
for off-road work.

I'd like to suggest that we each send in 5 words (plus a
definition/description?) and Granville compiles the start of the list from
that :)

------------------- from Granville ------------------------
English English -> American English:

o Bulkhead -> Firewall. Also refers to other structural cross-body
members separating compartments (as behind the cab area in an 88 = "rear
bulkhead").

o Gearbox -> transmission.
o Main box is the normal (main) transmission (1-4 + reverse);
o Transfer box is the transfer case (high/low).
o windcreen -> windshield
o bonnet -> hood
o A hood is the canvas top of soft-tops
o spanner ->  wrench
o paraffin -> kerosene
o petrol -> gasoline
o prise-> pry (Not sure about this one -- prise & pry are slightly different
actions :)
o carburettor -> carburetor
o aluminium -> aluminum

--------------- From Ian --------------------
Soft-top has a canvas hood; hard-top has a metal upper-body with only one
row of seats and 3 doors; station-waggon has 2 rows of seats and 5 doors

Green Road Run - An organised drive along a (normally overgrown & disused)
untarmaced & unclassified road (one that often turns into a stream or a
ditch :)

Transmission is the drive-train: the collective name for gearbox, transfer
case, differentials, prop-shafts & axels.

Subject: disc warping / for sale postings / 230+ readers and growing
Date: Thu, 24 Nov 94 07:30:11 -0500
From: William Caloccia <caloccia@sw.stratus.com>

Warping disc brake rotors, I reckon this advice would also apply to rovers:

One possibility is over or unevenly torqued lug nuts, they should
never be put on (fastened/tightened) with an air wrench, but should
always be finally tightened with with a torque wrench to
the manufacturer's specs... Even if your torque wrench is off a bit,
but consistant, you'll be better off than taking the random torque
from an air wrench. If you do it by hand, w/o out a torque wrench,
then you'd better hope you're consistant, and don't fade or get
over ambitious or throw your wieght into it, etc...

For Sale Postings on the list (re: haaland@atm.ox.ac.uk):

Yes, it is ok to post private 'for sale' or 'wanted' messages on the
list, a decent description is o.k., but save the service history for
additional enquiries. As the posts are archived (available from
Majordomo@chunnel.uk.stratus.com via mail for the last month), there
is no need to repeat posts with any frequency. People will go to
the trouble of asking for a repeat or finding the original should
	the motor be of interest.

We do have one subscriber who commercially imports rovers, and they
periodically make contributions, and they also advise/advertise of
what they have that is interesting or available. To date, no one
has objected, and they have been and have been considerate in
keeping the details for further enquiries, etc. With some luck
they might get some business, and they'll be another Rover owner :-)

[this paragraph has been added to 'info' for lro-digest, etc.]

Re: digest --
The trailing '^''M' characters will be removed from this future digests.

Re: digest archives --
In addition to the file <yymmdd> for the daily digest, there will
also be <yymmdd>.toc which will just contain the table of contents
	to allow easier searching.

Re: Majordomo
Is still happy to service any request for the 'lro-digest' list.

I've talked to majordomo about the 'lro' vs the 'lro-digest' thing,
and he'll still not deal with requests for 'lro' very well, but I
have left instructions to contact me before doing any 'add lro'
operations, so instead of blowing up while attempting to write to
an non-existant 'lro' list, I ought to get a mail notification that
someone is trying to subscribe to it.

Subject: RoverWorks Comments

I've dealt with Roverworks for a number of years , and even worked in
the shop briefly. My experiences started off well, but have been going
downhill ever since.
It's a long story that none of you want to here, but the end
result was that I trailered my 109 to Roverworks expecting to do
put a new frame under it while working there. I had ordered the new frame
six months earlier. Well, the frame wasn't there, and Later I found out that
Bill (owner) hadn't even ordered it. (He had assured me earlier it was
in a container on its way). I had to go back to school, and had no place to
store the Rover, so he offered to buy it (new drivertrain and sundries).
Well, one year later, I haven't seen any money for it, and he doesn't
return my phone calls. So I'm going to go down and pick up what's
left of it \(If anything).
So, my experience (and it's considerable) tells me that the people
at Roverworks are smooth talking rip-off artists, with little attention
to timeliness or honesty. Their work is good, but not that good,
and I would never go there to buy parts unless they could show me them and
I could drive away with the same.
So, Russell, good luck to your friend.

All,

I have been getting parts from England for a number of years. I have got
things like a Bull bar for the Range Rover and all my parts for my two SIII's.
Despite the shipping, I still save $$$

The best way to save $$$ is to make a large order and send it over by either
ship or fed ex, 5 day.

I use Craddocsk, Paddocks and also Merseyside Land Rover, all have saved me
money over Rovers North even with shipping. I also have the luxury of having
my parents in England, Dad a Lanr Rover nut. I can get things sent to him, and
he forwards to me via regular mail, also cheaper.

As I mentioned before, we should all group together and order parts and save
on the shipping.

I ALWAYS wave at ALL Land Rovers, most Series don't wave, I have had a few
Range Rovers wave back. Last year the wife and I took the Range Rover up Mount
Washington, I we passed two, both waved back.

I do agree that MOST Range ROver owners don't wave back or even know just what
they are driving, MOST can't be bothered with the waving stuff. Sad but true.
I have a neighbour that lives 1/4 mile down the road who just got a DISCO, he
went to Canada to get it, the reason why ? because the wife wanted one because
she didn't want a JAP 4x4 like everyone else !!!! I asked them if they waved
to other Land Rovers etc, they said why would we want to do THAT !

Personally, I think they got a DISCO cause we have a RANGE ROVER.... only
joking.

We in West Swanzey NH now have a Range Rover, 2 Series III's and a DISCO in
less than 1/4 mile.

I go off road in my Range Rover, and I wave back.

We already do this here in Ottawa. Srings and rims and such
weight quite a bit and sending by ship (three - four week
delivery) is the cheapest way to go. I have five or six
people right now I am putting a show boat order for.

Subject: Jurgen's Brake Rotors

Jurgen,

Re your question about brake disks warping frequently, there can be more than
one cause. The common one that you seem to have ruled out is excessive heat.
This can be caused by heavy braking over long distances, lot's of extreem stop
and go, and left foot braking (how many times have you seen someone barrel
past you in the fast lane with their brake lights on?), where ressting one's
foot on the pedal can heat them up real fast. If you continue to drive after
really heating them up, all should be OK. But when you come down a long hill
or after other heavy braking situations, and come to an extended stop, you run
ito problems. The rotor at this point is red hot, and you've got a small area
clamped down by your brake pads. The entire rotor begins to cool except for
the area clamped by the pads, which is well insulated. Differing levels of
cooling/contraction = warped rotors.

The other more likely cause is improper use of an air wrench when replacing
wheels. An inexperienced/uncaring operator can really screw up your lug
tightness. And even an experienced operator is subject to the variances of
supply air pressure caused by the compressor cycling on and off and the load
of other users. So what I would recommend is that if you ever have to have
anyone besides yourself replace a wheel, give him an extra Mark or dollar or
whatever you call those silly things with the Queen Mum on them that Uncle
Mike uses, and ask him to tighten it by hand.

Subject: Broken swivel ball drain plug

While crawling around underneath the Land Rover on a winterizing project
I discovered that the last so-called mechanic who changed the oil in the
right front axel swivel ball housing had broken off the drain plug at the
point that the threads meet the head of the plug. (Very bad for my blood
pressure). The thread portion of the plug is still in the housing.

Anybody have any ideas on how to remove the remaining part of the plug,
preferably without getting any metal inside the housing?

Does anyone know of a rough price for a heater (orig. smiths type pref.)
for a 54-58 series I landrover.

How readily available are they in the US/UK. They don't seem too
readily available here in Australia.

Ah hell... we all know that is the 15 inches of play in the steering,
one takes his life in his hands when trying to drive a series one
one-handed..

...er, could it be that I missed out some messages or a digest? Did anyone
already comment on the report of the National Rally in the Dec. issue of LRW ?
Like which car belongs to whom... and the feature of OVLR on page 111...
Just curious.

Looks like you did miss out (about 2 weeks ago). That's Dixon's 109
on p.111.

I have bounced my insider's scoop on the national rally photos to Stefan.

I dunno if these are in the Haynes glossary, but here's a few:

Wings Fenders
Boot Trunk (I know, Rover's don't have 'em, but you might want
to buy parts at a boot sale, so there.)
Sticks The metal frame that holds up a Hood (soft top), also...
Hoodsticks see Sticks
Courgetts Zucchini (Don't ask me!)

I'll add more as I think of them...
