From: AKBLACKLEY@aol.com Date: Thu, 2 May 1996 10:17:04 -0400 Subject: 3.5 Freshen Up Jim Dolan enquired about 3.5 parts. Sorry Jim I dont have any heads laying about. If you need a replacement heads two additional places, besides the usual ones, are Eight Parts (AKARovers west) in Arizona and T&.S Imports in Pandora, OH. Or contact Famous Four in the UK. Ive had good results from them - less than 1 week turn around after faxing my order. Buick heads may work, I have no experience with them, but they wont have the hardened valve seats for unleaded so I dont recommend them. I had similar problems when I first got my 83. The left head gasket blew. Pulled both heads, and the right side was not far behind. The guys at RN said this was common on high mileage 3.5 V8. Poor gasket material. Both heads were lightly skimmed ( they both need to be exactly the same for the intake manifold to fit properly), new Gen. Parts gaskets fitted. The block was OK. No prob.s 14K+ miles later. No exhaust pipe donuts were used, but there are individual gaskets for the ex. manifold to head join. While the heads were off I also had new rings and conn.(big end) bearings installed, both standard size. Even after 110K miles the bores were almost like new. A new valley pan gasket and end seals are installed, using a good gasket sealer. This part is a bit tricky, as everything wants to slide around, and the manifold with carbs is not that light. Take your time (but dont let the gasket seal harden!) All this was done with the engine in place. To do the main bearings the crank must come out, which means take the engine out. Ow! When the clutch goes I intend to do this job, plus the timing gears and chain, which also must be removed to take the crank out. I am no pro mechanic, but ive heard tales about removing the main caps on big bore V8s, dropping the crank (after disconnecting the transmission and pulling it back far enough for the pilot bearing to disengage the flywheel) just enough to slip in new bearing shells. Sounded to me like the worst sort of shade tree bodge, all on your back too. No thanks! Good Luck. Andy. ------------------------------[ <- Message 5 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960503 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

I don't doubt it. I have a regular policy on mine. I was really just responding about the appraisals, which I had to get when I bought mine, in order to get a loan for the purchase price. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Uncle Roger "There is pleasure pure in being mad sinasohn@crl.com that none but madmen know." Do you have to have the engine running when you run the shower, or does it store the hot water somehow? How much do they want for the set up? Date: Thu, 02 May 1996 12:07:12 -0700 From: "John Y. Liu" <johnliu@earthlink.net> Subject: Diagnosis Well, my 109's problem was a loose carburator jet that was just about ready to fall off. Not so far from the diagnosis received on this list. I suppose had it occurred "in the field" and had I not been in a business suit I would have checked the fuel pressure, fuel filter (for clogs), fuel line (for clogs), then pulled off the air hose from the ait filter and poked around in the carburator throat looking for something awry, and hopefully would have seen the problem. The gas leaking from the carburator body was a clue that there was a "too much" fuel problem, I guess. Carburators scare me, there is so much going on inside, lots of little pieces waiting to be lost, and little of it seems amenable to field fixes. But maybe that's just ignorance talking. And maybe I've been intimidated by my other truck's Holley 4-bbl and shouldn't be so timid with the cute little Solex. Do more mechanically savvy LRO's carry any carb parts in their spare parts bag on offroad trips? A spare jet, nuts and bolts, etc.? What about fuel pump parts, fuel line, etc.? ------------------------------[ <- Message 11 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960503 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Don't even mention the a-word - I think they've forgotten. I'm still on the island of St. Kitts, so if they crank up the 90 now it'll exit my garage and 50 yards later it'll be in the surf, and I won't even be there to conclude that it might need more than dismantling the dash and ignition switch that settled their hash last time. But while I am here, I have to report that LR is quite well represented, which is significant as this region is flooded with you-know-whatsu and the rest. There are lots of Series vehicles, from the barely holding together daily workhorses to the well-maintained/restored, some very nice looking Defenders - and not just the generic aid-programme type but a number of personal statements, like a particular metallic blue/green 90SW that I kept seeing, with just enough presence to be noticed and in its understatement simply outshining the poser Pa..ro & Tr....r uglies that abound. Considering the quote "Nobody ever lost a dollar underestimating public taste", P.T. Barnum could well have been a Land Rover owner looking around now at what some people think is a good purchase. From: iharper@afm.org Subject: Ignition Wires Date: Thu, 02 May 96 19:57:27 EST I was in my local Canadian Tire store today and noticed that they had spark plug wire sets on sale. On their brand they have that lovely little sticker that says "Lifetime Warranty". Obviously it's perfect for a car that never dies!! Has anyone used these, and if so, what is the CT number for a S3 2.25? They come in those plastic sealed packs, so I can't go through and match the sizes (although there were only a few for 4 cyl) Also, I was going to get shocks at my local UAP/Napa dealer, and they had ones (81273UNS) that seemed identical to the old ones, as well as being inexpensive (around $25 each) Anyone had any luck with these? What else should I use? Date: Thu, 2 May 1996 20:26:16 -0700 From: gpool@pacific.net (Granville Pool) Subject: LR/BMW rumor I got mty June issue of _Road_&_Track_ magazine today. In the Ampersand section was the following: "Rover clone as BMW's 4x4?" by Ian Norris "With Mercedes' AAV sport utility well on its way, rumor has it that BMW is formalizing plans for its own 4x4 for the U.S. market. Not surprisingly, the off-roader will have its roots in Solihull, the home of Land Rover, rather than in Munich. The basis for the new sport ute will be the replacement for the current Discovery, due to make its debut in 1997. "Based upon the running gear of the existing Discovery, the 1997 version will be available only as a 4-door and will come with a new Rover diesel engine and the venerable Rover V-8. The newcomer will be built at Solihull and sold throughout the world as a Land Rover, but it will also be made in South Carolina for sale in the U.S. as a BMW. "The U.S. vehicle will be visually different from those sold under the Rover badge with a BMW-influenced grille and front end. Inside, it will be more in keeping with BMW's ergonomic traditions. Under the skin will be less BMW input, since the German engines are less suitable for use in off-road vehicles than the Rover V-8. The ex-Buick unit has been the mainstay of the Land Rover range for years now and has been well adapted to its purpose. Although a sport utility would fit in well with the existing BMW range and customer demographics, this plan has been officially denied, but don't be surprised if there's a change of mind come next year." Hmmm, lots of tidbits crammed in that little rumor (which sound rather more than a rumor to me). New Land Rover diesel engine? Does this mean to include the U.S.? Sounds pretty clear hear that rumors that BMW engines will soon replace the Rover ones are probably unfounded. Replacement for the current Discovery? Does this mean the new CB-40 or something else that's in the works? Fud fer thot. From: iharper@afm.org Subject: Vapour Lock Date: Thu, 02 May 96 19:57:28 EST Finally caught up to date with the digests, and followed the vapour lock issue as it unfolded. I have had a similar problem, but the fuel line setup on mine is different (though it looks factory installed!). The line runs up to the firewall, where it goes through a diesel type cannister filter, then down by the brake servo, past the WW bottle and makes a 180 to the carb. This seems contrary to all the advice of keeping it in front of the engine and lower than the carb. Should I ditch it and run a regulation line across the front by the thermostat housing and straight to the carb? BTW I was also advised to ditch the Weber refit and reinstall a new Zenith, which I did, because that was compounding the situation. (It never had alot of power anyways) HELP, it's starting to get warm out again....
