For a really accurate tdc screw a piece of plastic (Clear) tube into the
plug hole. With the cylinder at approx TDC fill the tube with ATF then rock
the crank back and forth. Mark the pulley when the oil level is lower than
its highest point on each side of tdc (same level each side) and TDC is half
way between the two marks.
The other advantage of this method is that the film of ATF remaining in the
cylinder will help burn off some of the carbon. Be sure to blow out most of
the ATF before putting the plug back in and turning the engine over.
