My SIIA pickup finally arrived from England today. Except for a broken tail
light and a few dings in the rear license plate, she survived the trip quite
well.
However, somewhere along the way, the ignition was left in the "on"
position. Thus the battery was flat. I think it fried the fuel pump as well,
as the pump was working fine when I left England 6 weeks ago. Once the
battery was charged, I jiggled the wires on the pump and "Annie" fired right
up. But, the pump wouldn't keep running and it finally made a "pop" noise
and began to smoke. I pulled it apart and all the wiring melted. Drat.
The catalogues want around $400 for a 6-cyl pump unit. Has anyone modified
their system to use a standard in-line fuel pump from a place such as Napa?
I like the price better, and it would be easier to find a replacement on the
road. What psi does the 6 cyl run? The pump at Napa I looked at runs 7-13
psi. I doesn't seems as though it needs much, as once the truck fired, it
kept pulling fuel even when the pump was disconnected. It just won't start
without the pump.
Ideas, tips, comments, ridicule?
