I've always had a mix of resentment/attraction to the coleman 2 burner red
tank white gas beast. I own a few expedition and super light stoves but the
coleman green monster is still the stove of choice when you want something
that will run in any conditions. They rarely work well (in comparison to my
MSR Dragonfly) but they almost always start.
A friend of mine's dad is an engineer who specialises in underground sewage
construction in permafrost. He's often up north, and says that the workers
all have their coleman stoves, which have a 1/2" layer of caked on food and
burnt stuff on them, the sides and cover ripped off, the main housing dented
and mangled from years of use. They swear by these things to cook their
lunches, warm their hands, and defrost their mitts.
Personally, there's nothing quite like the taste of white gas in your coffee
in the morning... However, cowboy coffee's my favorite ;-)
