For a period starting in 67 the license plate letter ran from August to
July, thus a B reg for example could apply to an 84 or an 85. So if a
vehicle was an 84 B (as opposed to an 84A) it would be called a B reg, if
it was an 85B (as opposed to an 85C) it would be reffered to as a 85. The
idea being that it created the impression that the vehicle was newer than
it really was. This gave rise to the use of letters to describe the
vehilce.
