It just goes to show you that there is variation in the carbs over the
years and one version's correct jetting is another's valve burner. And
I can see the ocean from my front porch.
When I tried a 49 the engine ran so lean it cut out at 3000 RPM from
not having enough fuel. A trip to the CO meter showed the engine to be
running REAL lean. It took a 51 jet to get my carb in ballpark range.
My carb was from a 1954 Chevy with 236 inline six engine.
Best thing to do is take it to a SMOG guy and ask what the air fuel
ratio is at cruise RPMs.
