Actually the bypass oil filter system in the early 2.0 liter (and 1.6L?) is
a remotely mounted filter with piping that runs from the engine and back.
The filter is a canister that looks a lot like a small propane torch tank
that has compression fittings on top to fit the piping. Every 10K miles
(whether it needed it or not :), the filter should be replaced. The filters
are like $90.00 unobtanium these days.
My biiiig questions are: how is that filter different in functionality from
modern spin-on filters? I understand the oil pump doesn't send all the oil
through the filter before the galleries, but does that mean the filter is
different? Has anyone done this before?- I'm not going to reinvent the
wheel if someone can point me to a filter adaptor and appropriate fittings.
FWIW, the oil pressure is adjustable at the pump (kinda like the freeplay in
the steering box on later LR's), so maybe that is the way to compensate for
filter differences.
I'll keep you posted.
