To what purpose? I bought it from the original owner and I can assure you he
was not the type to be impressed by add on trim pieces. The vehicle was 20
years old at the time and was completely original as far as I could tell. I
can understand upgrading many components of the vehicle, but that particular
piece is not on my list.

I think the dish was installed in the deluxe bonnets to provide a better
forward view. If that's the case it would argue that the bonnets started out
without a dish and were changed at a later date.

Having watched many of these discussions on the Healey list and I can only say
that the truth may be so simple we overlook the answer or so complex we could
never guess the truth.
I heard of someone asking Geoffrey Healey in a tone of reverence and awe what
their (Donald Healey Motors) transcendental (I added that word) purpose was in
selecting the particular metallic green color that most Austin Healey engines
were painted.
He took a drag from his pipe and, looking very sage as though summoning deep
and important memories said that at the time they received the first order of
any magnitude for the cars they had one drum of RAF surplus green paint and
one of silver, but not enough of either to paint the whole lot, so they mixed
them.
In other words, it might be interesting to know the answer, but it probably
doesn't make a damned bit of difference.
