As I was leaving on my trip to Maine, for Bruce Fowler's Winter Romp rover
event, I started getting a bit of noise from the transfer
case/tranny/driveshaft area. I immediately thought that it was my front
driveshaft, which I removed. No dice. Then, I proceeded to mess around by
jacking up the rear axle and seeing what was causing this horrible noise. I
narrowed it down to the T case/tranny. It was related to road speed, and only
audible on acceleration or heavy overrun, not on coast. This is an expensive
sounding noise, the ones you dread.

Well, it's nasty. The high range gears are all shot. Looks like one gear tooth
chipped/broke, and due to the super goopy gear oil because of the cold,
instead of simply falling into the pan, it rolled around and took out
everything in it's path. Ugly. This happened AS I WAS JUST LEAVING for a 9
hour drive. I don't usually carry a spare Transfer Case in my spare parts
    box.

I was just in this T case, and saw no marks, flaws, or problems with the
gears. The gear oil was the proper type and at the right level. Weird.

So, Bruce, needless to say I won't make it. Grr.

    J-L
