[lro] first and reverse failure

    Jim, the symptoms you describe are classic indicators of failure of the
    first gear on the mainshaft. In ser 2/2A it is common to both first and
    reverse gears, and the weakest link in the box. It's a straight cut gear
    with a low contact ratio; 2, 3 and 4 are helical and have a higher
    contact ratio. Early boxes had a 15 tooth gear and the later boxes a 14
    tooth gear.
     While you are in there fixing the gears, fit a new 2nd/3rd gear bearing
    bush at the same time.
