Just to chuck in my twopennorth..
When did SUV come into use? Mid-Eighties, early 90s?
There were Landie estates/station wagons from the fifties, allong with
Suburbans, Travellals, Scouts Powerwagons, Townwagons etc etc... All large
people carrying utility vehicles, some/most 4x4.
Sports could be anything from soccer through huntin' and shootin' to
climbing, hiking, canoeing... whatever. I guess proponents of these
activities would use a vehicle to carry their sports gear in. I don't take
the Sports in SUV to mean sporty driving as in Keiths Miata or TAWs Triumph
BTW.... I can't see it somehow.
Thus utility vehicles used for sports have been around forever.
The modern useage, ie 4x4 'wagon loaded with electric toys. aircon and
leather that goes to the office, mall and back is somewhat missing the point
IMHO. It's _us_ that drive _real SUVS, and should claim the name back!!
