Er, Al, I'm sorry, but you're wrong. A tach can be run from that
terminal. It provides a signal that varies from system voltage to
zero. Stick a voltmeter on the terminal -- you'll see the voltage
change (or half system voltage, depending on your meter). I don't
remember if it's at engine speed or twice engine speed, or something
else entirely. (GM almost always ran these alternators at twice
engine speed; though it might be a bit more in a diesel). This is how
GM ran tachs in diesels equipped with the alternator. It's quite
possible (even likely) that a rebuilt alternator is equipped with a
voltage regulator that doesn't provide it, as it's not used by GM in
gas vehicles.
