The first time that I drove along those Michigan roads I wondered whether
there had been some huge corrupt construction scam at work building
substandard roads. But over the years they haven't changed and there seem
to be a lot more of them. On one of my trips across Canada by way of the
Northern Tier States I was pulling a small utility trailer. just a little
thing with perhaps three hundred pounds of stuff total. When I hit those
Michigan expansion strips I thought the trailer would rip the back end of
the Subaru it was jerking and leaping so much. I wonder what they do to
large transport trailers?
The only other place I have seen such horrible expansion joints is the
Trans Canada ring road around Winnipeg. They were (are?) as bad as
Michigan's with the added feature of nasty frost heaves.
By the way, I phoned my wife at work and told her the coffee holder
story. Her response was, "I thought they were against The Old Land Rover
Law. Serves you right."
