I drove from Canyon de Chelly in northern Arizona to Tucson in front wheel
drive after breaking a rear axle and not having a spare. I experienced what
felt and sounded like tranny wind up releasing. Every few miles there would
be a huge shudder followed by a very loud "bang" from the front. I never
have figured out what caused the noise. A subsequent inspection of the
entire drive drain revealed nothing amiss. After I fixed the axle everything
was fine and it never happened again.
