Alan,
Marcel Chichak has compiled a pretty comprehensive list of lucas
distributors, their advance curves, applications and so on. It's on
his tech page, at
http://www.telusplanet.net/~chichm/tech
He lists 40944A for Land-Rover 2.25 engines 61-77. I know Miss Jess
is older than that, so if you find that you have a different number,
let him know. Actually, even if you don't have a different number,
tell him so that he can update his application list.
He also has a guide to converting a Nissan distributor
(self-contained electronic ignition) to fit an A-series engine (which
used a 23D4 or 25D4, so the same process would work for a Land-Rover.)
