Thank you for contacting our office. We appreciate your kind words.
Land Rover's heritage in the United States features the Range Rover,
Defender, Discovery and, in early 2002, the Freelander models. The Land
Rover Series vehicles were not included as they were not distributed by Land
Rover North America. We again appreciate your interest in Land Rover. If
you have any additional questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let
us know.
Thank you,
Land Rover Owner Relations

A quote from
http://www.freelander.com/content/freelander/freelander_heritage.jsp
"In 1948, Land Rover was begun with a simple idea: build a "go anywhere,
do anything" vehicle that would capture the world's imagination. That first
vehicle -- now known as the DEFENDER (emphasis added) -- accomplished its
mission."
Ahem.
I am a proud Defender (and Range Rover LWB) owner, and I don't think the
line goes back that far.
I can understand not wanting to admit Land Rover started with a J**p
chasis. However, why skip all the legendary Series vehicles?
