    Nope that's not it. The Defender uses thinner sheet metal than the
    Series II.

    According to Land Rover sales publication# LR335

       The overall length of a One Ten regular is 175 inches
          (THe stationwagon is longer)

    According to "Land Rover Technical Details, October 1971", Publiccation
    #806/10.71

       Overall length of a 109 is 175 inches.

    So maybe they just did a better job of centering the rear wheel in the
    wheel well opening.

    If you look at a series rig from the side the rear wheel is noticably
    forward of the wheel well centre.

    I know someone who centered the rear wheels in the wheel well of his 88.
    He created a Series II 91.
