    George, the front cover mod is pretty simple.

    The mudshield over the seal is held on by a ring of rivets. Drill those out
    and punch out the remains.

    After that clean and paint the mudshield if you wish, and while that's
    drying drill and tap the rivet holes in the cover - likely 8-32 or
    whatever's closest to the original hole. Once done,. the mudshield can be
    reattached with screws - daub some sealer on the threads or you might get a
    bit of seepage around 'em.

    Then, next time the seal needs replacement it's a 20-minute job...
