The reason for this is worn valve guides. The sloppy fit in the guide
allows the valve to be pushed ever-so-slightly out of vertical by the
rocker. Valve contacts seat at the same place first each rev, so it
develops a hot/weak spot, leading to the familiar, wedge-shaped crack.
