Date: Mon, 6 May 1996 21:33:48 +0200 From: lopezba@atnet.at Subject: Shopping spree in LR country Dear all, last week I was in the UK on an annual shopping spree. On Monday we went to Dunsfold, where Mr. Brian Bashall was kind enough to show us part of the collection (and we did not spend *that* much money, after all). We bought some parts for the SI 107" Station Wagon restoration project, and got some free advice. He also told us that somebody is trying to get him interested in a web site, but he hesitates to start that because "I would not know the people, and whether they are real enthusiasts or what". So if you find the time drop him a line and encourage him to get on the web - there should be some very interesting pictures of all his "firsts". The address is D L R attn. Mr. Brian Bashall Alfold Road Dunsfold Godalming, Surrey GU8 4PN Fax: ++44 1483 200738 If you go there to get parts, send them a list in advance and tell them when you will be there, this will help parts availability. The name of the spare parts manager is Glen Blakebrough. After Dunsfold we went to Yate to get some restoration things from Eastwood, and then to Hay-on-Wye to buy books so my wife has something to do while I fiddle with the Land-Rover. The next day we visited John Taylor, who had agreed to show us his restored 107" S/W. He has four or five S I's, and the day before our arrival had driven 300 miles to get a few valves for his latest project, an 80" fire tender that he was going to show this past weekend for the first time. Next we went to see Stafford Dovey, who had managed the impossible and got me a rear bulkhead for my Station Wagon - only about 290 were ever made for the UK, and only about 3,000 altogether, so finding this part was no mean feat. I can highly recommend him for all sorts of odds and ends. You would be better off writing, though, and telling him about your wishes. Let me give you an example - I bought a bonnet spare wheel mount from him last year, but he only had the round rubber blocks for the tire, so I asked him to find the rectangular blocks that are right for an SI. After a few weeks he sent me four by mail, at a very reasonable price. One of them was in its original wrapping, with two labels attached, so I wanted to keep it - Staff found another one for me, in exchange for pictures of my S/W. Oh, by the way, if you know of any 107" S/W, please ask the owner to drop Staff a line, he has started a Ten-Seater Register and is interested in vehicle data, pictures, history and whatever else is available. His daily transport is a 1956 107", and there are a few more hard-working Land Rovers in his yard. His address: L. Stafford Dovey 173/4 Acre Rd Carlton Near Newmarket Suffolk CB8 9LF Tel ++44 1223 290468 (no fax) If you call him, allow for plenty of time since he is usually inside a Land-Rover up to his elbows. Better to write to him, anyway. He is not geared for credit cards, by the way. Staff had problems with Land Rover, since he used Their Name In Vain (he called himself Land-Rover Specialist without being properly anointed by them). Now he is pretty much the most L-R-knowledgeable person I know, and keeps the legend alive - they should give him a medal instead of harassing him (not that he complains). After that it was a day birdwatching in Minsmere, and back to Vienna. So summer, fall and winter will be spent restoring, and next spring should see me ready for the big one - Iceland in 1997! From: ericz@cloud9.net Date: Wed, 8 May 1996 06:38:14 -0700 Subject: Internet Rover Withdrawl Re-post, it seems this never went through.... Hello all! It seems that the lists have slowed down quite a bit these days. Probably everyone coming out of hibernation with the weather slowly improving in the northern hemisphere. If you happen to be suffering from Internet Rover withdrawl, I have a small solution. I am pleased to announce that I'm now in the Land Rover business. I won't waste mailer bandwidth by selling myself, I'll just say that our URL is as follows: http://www.OverlandMotors.com If you don't have graphical web access, send me some e-mail and I'll tell you all about it. I announce this at the great risk of being flamed. I would only like to say that the only commericial use I'm putting this list to (beyond this beginning post) is to add a short sig file to my mail....I hope not to annoy anyone further. If you would like to recieve commercial plugs via e-mail, let me know and I'll put you on our list. Date: Wed, 8 May 1996 12:02:54 -0500 From: Fred Ellsworth <fellswor@camb-lads.loral.com> Subject: Rollbars, hinges, galvanizing Hi all, I've been looking into the possibility of making a roll bar of some sort for my 88". Right now I'm thinking along the lines of a Defender style cage that will fit over the tropical roof above the bed section only. This might be too complicated for an amateur in a welding/fabricating class though, so I'm open to suggestions. I'd appreciate any input from others who have made or seen a setup they liked on an 88". The class doesn't start til next month so I have plenty of time... In the meantime, I took the door hinges off to be galvanized along with a bunch of other parts and ran into these hokey captive nuts in the bulkhead. I ended up having to drill the heads off three of the bolts to get all the hinges off. Has anyone discovered a better replacement for these? Finally, while I'm on the subject of rollbars and galvanization, I've noticed that some clubs/organizations' specs for roll bars prohibit galvanizing. Is this because it makes it difficult to check materials & welds, or are there some other adverse affects I'm not aware of? Thanks in advance, Fred PS I haven't recieved any digests in over a week, and only sporadically for a couple weeks prior to that, so for all I know I'm sending this posting to electron-land. If anyone actually sees this and has suggestions please send them directly to me. Has anyone ever heard of a RR axle shaft breaking?<< The ARB is a stronger unit. It has a four spider gears versus the stock two. >From what I learned when researching this myself, most of the problems with the half shafts were with the 10 spline shafts in the series vehicles, the 24 spline shafts in the newer vehicles are stronger. Some of this may be due to stronger material or increased diameter (I don't know if either is true), but mainly to a better transition of force from the splines to the shaft. This area of transition on the 10 spline axles is usually where the separation occurs. ------------------- | | | | _ _ ____|____ _ _ | Rob Dennis O |[___|>>>>>>>>>|___]| O 73363.427@Compuserve.com \____===_=====_===____/ Atlanta, GA USA |oo |(_)###(_)| oo| (404) 875-4537 | | ### | | | | ####### | | 1972 SerIII 88 |_____|_#######_|_____| 1990 RangeRover [_______________________] EEEI EEEI Send By: Rob Dennis 73363.427@Compuserve.com On 10-May-1996 ------------------------------[ <- Message 11 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960511 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

In the Ampersand section was the following: "Rover clone as BMW's 4x4?" by Ian Norris "With Mercedes' AAV sport utility well on its way, rumor has it that BMW = is formalizing plans for its own 4x4 for the U.S. market. Not = surprisingly, the off-roader will have its roots in Solihull, the home of Land Rover, rather than in Munich. The basis for the new sport ute will be the replacement for the current Discovery, due to make its debut in 1997. "Based upon the running gear of the existing Discovery, the 1997 version will be available only as a 4-door and will come with a new Rover diesel engine and the venerable Rover V-8. The newcomer will be built at = Solihull and sold throughout the world as a Land Rover, but it will also be made = in South Carolina for sale in the U.S. as a BMW. After reading and coveting Land Rovers for sometime, I am thinking about trying to get one. I am looking for a Series IIa if possible. One of my fiance's concerns is how reasonable it will be for us to use it as a "daily driver" for around town. Any opinions? The two vehicles I am interested in is a Series IIa 1964 LWB Station Wagon. I haven't seen it yet, but the owner said that it's in remarkably good shape with 120,000 miles and runs well. He said there is a little rust damage on the body, and he is looking for US$6,000. The other vehicle I am really interested in, is very fascinating, but probably too impractical 1957 Series I. The owner is a total car-restoration fanatic and has completely gone through the axles, differentials, brakes, transmission, electrical system, etc. After talking with him and seeing his work, I trust that he has done a professional original job, and I know that the hard part of the restoration is done. The engine seems strong with decent compression, but hasn't been worked on. He wants $3,900, but my fiance is *very* unsure of how dependable it would be. I would appreciate any advice (or pro-ammunition), --Jason _______________________________________ Chicken Scratch Design E-Mail--> jasonc@csdnet.com CompuServe --> 71234,442 http://www.csdnet.com/~csdesign _______________________________________ ------------------------------[ <- Message 14 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960511 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]
