Subject: Registration of "Grey" L-Rs

     All,

A friend of mine here in the US has recently taken possession of a
quasi-IIA 109 station wagon imported from the UK. He got it
registered OK (he lives in one of those easy states), but upon reading
the little metal data plate in the cockpit has discovered that the
plate (and hence the veh. no.) are from an 88. It seems that in his
present locality, if he simply had a 109 data plate, he could
reregister, preventing difficulties if he or his wife get transferred
by Uncle Sam to another jurisdiction.

Is this reasonable? Any spare IIA 109 plates out there?

Is the vehicle's true identity stamped in the frame somewhere,
     presuming the frame is original?

He received the Brit tags with the car (one square & one long) -- can
anyone match those numbers with the factory ID?

I will pass the fruits of your collective wisdom to him; he is not up
on the net. Thanks in advance.

     Hank

Subject: No D90's after 95

FYI, My dad recently checked out the D90 for himself and the salesman
(Automaster in Burlington, VT) said the same thing. Also mentioned that a big
part of the problem is that they are bringing them in as trucks (no rear seat
installed) and installing other stuff later. They are paying something like a
25% import duty. But Customs is getting rather PO's at this strategy (probably
Detroit's lobbiests are pushing that along, even though LR only sold about 600
Defenders in the US last year)

Cheers,

May all the Rover Gods forgive me. We have a 2.3 litre Ford Tempo. This
engine will lug quite happily from 600 rpm in fifth all the way up to a
speed of 110 plus mph. Has anyone considered this unit as a transplant. Ours
now has over 100,000 miles and seems ready for the next 100k it even leaks
like an authentic LR. Ther must be all kinds available from the wreckers
yard.

I have a friend who has both a 2.25 petrol and a diesel land Rover engine

about which engine he should rebuild and install? He is not on the net so
I will have to pass the info on to him. Thanks, Mike.

Oh - why not rebuild both and just change them depending on the job? Petrol
for nipping in to town, winter weather. Diesel for long hauls and low-end
torque. Perhaps one in front and one in back with a second transfer
box... you could engage either or both ;-) I think we've got a project

(This is not a Taylor-question :)

I'm now in the market for a 109 which I will be using for
o Camping holdays (mainly within Europe)
o Recovery work at SLROC meetings
o Driving when it's to mankey for bicycling

My preference is for a Diesel engine (I have a heavy right foot), but I'd
be interested in people views on the benefits or disadvantages of either.
If I get a few replies, I'll summerise and post....

Incidently, I had thought about using a 101 instead of the 109, but I
couldn't be able to fit a capstan winch, nor would my wife be happy
getting in & out of it (a 101 with a Perkins conversion would be ...
"interesting" :)

BTW, if anyone in the UK knows of a 109 with a good engine & chassis that
needs bodywork and a new home - let me know :-)

Did he pump sand into someone's oil filler spout??

Hey Uncle Brad,

Define for us what bad is. I am not about to turn a guy in without knowing
what he did. In these days with law inforcement after scape goats you never
know. If all he did was use some LSD, or declare that he was above the law
without actually acting upon it, then bah bum bug. Ok, enough of my hot
air.

I have never heard of this guy, but if you tell us what he did maybe we
will be more enthused on catching him.

Yours,
Jason

Your adventure sounds interesting. It would be great if we could publish
your postings in the Toronto Area Rover Club News as It is wonderful to have
real Rover tales to include along with stuff we steal from elsewhere. If you
go ahead with your hook up and daily postings or if you write when you
return, can you post an authority to reprint in the TARC news.
Thanks, enjoy your trip.

I have read in LRO how Land Rover spares are sought after overseas.

I live in Cornwall (UK) and have come across a large quantity of second
hand Land Rover spares, masses of differentials, but just about
everything else as well, bodies, engines, gearboxes etc.

If anyone in foreign parts may be interested in an export deal, then
please let me know. These are not my spares, and of course anything
that may result is dependant on the owner being willing to sell (I
don't see why not) and someone being able to arrange transport.

I am not an import/export agent or anything, just trying to help out
the 4WD community, and I hate seing things go to waste. The chap told
me that he sent a load of diffs to the tip just because the casings
were rusty and he couldn't afford the time to clean them up. I am sure
someone somewhere in the world would like these and be willing to offer
him something he couldn't refuse. He said he would be willing to
recondition them if he had a definite buyer.

After spending a significant amount of time on scripts to implement
automated key words, I've determined that it is definitely non-trivial.

The number of insignificant hits exceeded the number of significant matches...
in many cases - the number of possible tokens (wheelbase, lengths, without
prefix 'D' or suffix '"'), which could be a match and could also insignificant
becomes dizzying when common signatures are included (phone numbers, address num
bers, vehicle owned, etc.)

My brother Fred (a lurker) has written a script that he uses to process
the digests of the BMW group (which gets far more traffic than this). He
is only interested in 2002 talk, so he uses his script to extract only
those posts that contain "02". Of course, if anyone posts a message
without 02 in the subject, and it pertains to naught twos, it ain't
extracted.....people on that list tend to be "subject line concious"
though....

If anyone is interested I could get him to send you the script (which
you'd have to modify) but YOU'D have to convince us all to be a little
more conscientious WRT being descriptive in our subject lines.

I really feel that we all should be very carefull about discussing how to
Register Land Rovers with tag ? VIN problems.

I have it on good authority that US Customs are preparing a booklet aimed
specifically at our beloved Marque and how to spot the flaws etc.

The man responsible according to my source used to work in the Auto
industry selling the Solihull machine in the late sixties early seventies
and is very au fait with the various variants.

As I have said before this is as far as I know being done with the
cooperation of LRNA.

Uncle Roger tells us...

Oh, No! Not the BEER issue again... OK, look.. I have it on good authority
that (in Canada at least) that you don't get a cooler full of suds but the
bottle do wind up empty... For a number of reasons... (1-Dixon, 2-Dale,
3-McDermott, etc, etc) No, actually what happens is this... The beer, packed
in ice in a large cooler is placed where it can be accessed easily from the
tailgate. The Land-Rover, packed with thirsty Canadians, is placed in a
large mudhole where it can be proclaimed "well and truely stuck". The
Canadians then get out of the Land-Rover and proceed to slosh about in the
mud, which BTW can be anywhere from knee to navel deep. This of course,
causes them to be thirstier and cries of "Have a beer, eh!" can be heard.
The bottles are thus emptied, the Canadians are happy and the Land-Rover is
driven out (it was never really stuck anyway).

Notice how I kept this on topic by mentioning Land-Rover three times.. :)

You missed a couple of years ago where McD stepped out of his
Series One and discovered a slight drop off at the side of the
Land Rover. He went in over his head... :-) (water of course)
Of course this year the heavy off-road traverses a long beaver
dam. A wee drop on both sides, over rather deep and full of water.
Of course again, you have to get up on the dam, and then back down.
Now remembering your navigating prowness last year near beaver
dams, this should be rather enjoyable to watch... <grin>

	Rgds,

Subject: Peter Parsons' 1924 road tripper

Pardon for wasting bandwidth, but I lost Peter Parsons' email address.
Some time ago, he asked who was the round the world road tripping woman
who bumped into the the Great Round the World Air Race of 1924.

I finally found it. She was Aloha Baker of Britain, only sixteen at the
time. She wrote it up in CALL TO ADVENTURE! (New York, R.M. McBride &
Co., 1939). She also figures for about 5 min. in the 1989 PBS "The
American Experience" episode on the 1924 air race. The video is
available for educational purposes, but not for home use. Local library
should be able to ILL the book from somewhere.

Pretty strange car she used. I bet she p****d off a few camels.

If you are going to travel north of the border, try Ronnie Dale's
place....

If it isn't leaking,
it's probably out of something.

A.J. Bonanno asked about checking the oil level on the Fairey
Overdrive:

According to Land Rover's fitting instructions for the Fairey OD,
"Dipstick reading should be obtained by screwing fully into place."
0.4 L (0.75 pint) of EP90 oil is specified.

(btw, fwiw, while slumming around some of the grottier corners of the net, I
discovered that the <alt.tasteless> home page owner has awarded the 1994
Tasteless Rookie of the Year prize to none other than P. Ketteridge!)
