Date: Mon, 20 Mar 95 13:01:15 GMT From: cpitts@omi.co.uk (Chris Pitts) Subject: Renovating LRs for beginners... Dear All Having been lurking here for a while, I feel confident enough that I know what's going on to ask for some advice/comment. I have an M-reg (1972) Series III LWB stationwagon which I picked up fairly cheap (and it shows :-) ) over 2 years ago. It's nearing a road-worthy state again after nearly a year off the road (work, weather etc meant I could only get things done piecemeal. But only the brakes to bleed now ! Hurrah !). However, the beastie is only worth keeping if the chassis is sound. I suspect it's been used for pulling boats in and out of water since the back section of the chassis had to be replaced for any chance of it passing the next MOT. The rest of the chassis _seems_ sound - so far as I can see/reach/tap. What I'd like advice on is the best way to check the rest of the chassis. Do I need to dismantle the vehicle to a rolling chassis, or is there an easier way ? Ditto for the bulkhead - what's the easiest way of changing a badly corroded bulkhead (I'm assuming the worst here - it may be repairable). Finally, something which I've been wavering about since I bought it. It is fitted with the standard 6 cylinder 2.6 petrol engine. Assuming the chassis is OK, and it's worth doing some serious renovation, would I be committing an unforgiveable sin by chucking out the 2.6 and changing it to diesel ? Or would I be doing myself a favour ? I mean, I _could_ recondition the 2.6 so that I got 15 mpg out of it instead of 10.... :-} Any comments/suggestions welcome (except "You're crazy"...I know that already, otherwise I wouldn't even be considering this ! :-) ) - especially from anyone who has done any of these jobs - the manual makes it look easy. A Lot of paints cause the foam to disintegrate and you get left with bits of foam and pain stuck to your LR. I had this misfortune, and ended up using initation sheepskin, rollers which worked fine. David and Cheryl Ritchie of the BRLRC (Blue Ridge Land Rover Club) have installed a traditional-looking aluminum hardtop on their white D90. The installation is gorgeous. Unfortunately, I believe the roof they got a-hold of was a prototype from Solihull and that there may be no more. I witnessed the installation (How many Rover enthusiasts DOES it take to install a hardtop?) and it was a bit of a bear to put on. Had to remove the outside rollcage, cut some small sections of aluminum and draw the sides of the box together slightly to line them up (Land Rovers "relax" when the hardtop is not on and the sides spread apart slightly). And it had to be re-installed at least once to fix a leak. But the finished product was GORGEOUS. David and Cheryl are really nice people, and if you write them a nice letter via BRLRC, I am sure they will give you some details. Cheers, R. P. From: kleihors@prl.philips.nl Subject: Re: painting question Date: Mon, 20 Mar 1995 18:13:32 MET Hi Jan, welcome to the world of land-rovers (in a few weeks). Reg. the type of paint, it depends on wether you sand the body back to bare metal or not. If you do, you will need an etching primer first to adhere to the aluminum. If not, I would use any good paint that you can find. I would use some old-time poly-urethane enamel because you can apply it with a brush, roller, and it is tough. A land-rover will be scratched in no-time (with proper use). Any shiney new look is purely based on personality. I would use a good brush rather than a roller because it's easier to follow the window contours. Do not use a foam roller but go for the better sheep-skin ones they will give a much better result. Put some money in the brush or roller, it pays in the result. Aren't the army colours nice though? Pay more attention to painting the frame! You wouldn't have a spare soft-top lying around uselessly in a couple of weeks would you. I have a top-less 88" ser. II wich will need some canvas in a year orso (when it starts to snow). I'm also particularly interested in the "civilisation registration" procedure because it also needs a new registration, it has the tags, but the're not legal anymore. Hi list, The 109" ser IIa, is nearing completion. Thanks to the list, the steering is without play now, welding is all done. I have also installed a dual braking system from ATe which works fine. (Had to redesign one of the spare pedal boxes). Right now I'm reconnecting and improving the on-board electricity. Best wishes, -- Richard P. Kleihorst, | 109" station-wagon 1963. Sorry if this is a repeat. There is an excellent land rover sighting on a Bud Light commercial of all places. A young couple are driving on some kind of safari with a fully loaded SWB (probably a series IIA but I'm not positive) when surrounded by a troop of chimpanzees. High point is hubby complaining about the chimps being goofy as his wife comments on their being cute while at the same time several chimps are raiding their roof mounted cooler and liberating it of its Bud Light. Chimps are definitely smarter than that fellow, but drinking Bud Light is not a sign of much intellectual saavy. Date: Tue, 21 Mar 1995 10:36:49 -0600 From: hiner@mail.utexas.edu (Greg Hiner) Subject: Overdrive Blues The problem - Fill up the transfer box with 90wt (or I guess 80/90) go for a drive down the highway. 90wt moves from transfer box into overdrive and gearbox with the result that they both end up too full and the transfer box is low. Also fine mist of 90wt is deposited all over the rear (there goes that automatic frame oiler again). The overdrive just blows excess oil out its vent. Now this problem has been reported before and the anwer was to put vents on the gearbox, transfer case, and overdrive. Well as the transfer box was the one losing oil I thought it must be the one building up pressure so I put a new vent on it. That didn't solve the problem. Now I suspect the seals between the components must be bad. Any thoughts? As I said I use 80/90wt and I'm not sure if it is hypoid (whatever that means or not). Could this cause problems? I fill the transfer box up (IIa model) to the check plug on the side so I'm not overfilling it. Date: 20 Mar 95 19:14:28 EST From: "WILLIAM L. LEACOCK" <75473.3572@compuserve.com> Subject: Gearboxes et al Jan -- Netherland Your 1983 109 will have few metric fittings, most will be American threads, the UNF and UNC series, thes have hexagon head sizes similar to the metric. ie 1/4" unf takes a 7/16" ( 11,1 mm ) wrench but an 11 mm will do, the 5/16" unf takes a 1/2" ( 12,7 mm) wrench so a 13 mm will be a slack fit, and the 3/8" unf takes a 9/16" ( 14,27 mm ) wrench. Just be careful, do not try to puse metric screws in tapped holes, it is OK to use nuts and bolts. Geir Gearbox noise. Transfer boxes are usually not much trouble, take a look at the gear at the output from the main gearbox, this is accessed through a flange on the rear of the gearbox which is secured by 6 ( 9/16" a/f ) nuts, the gear is secured to the shaft by a castellated nut and a lockwasher, these often come loose allowing the mainshaft to float. There is a steel acces cover on the top of the box. If you remove the bottom transfer case you can inspect the state of the idler gear bearings and teeth. One of the problems associated with a box that rarely gets used in 4wd or low ratio is that the shafts that pass through the transfer case to change ratio or engage / disengage 4 w sieze up. at the front of the front output shaft housing , just above the drive shaft connection you will see a metal cover which has a couple of pieces of tube welded to it. If you remove this cover which necessitates the removal of the yellow knob rocker you will see 2 shafts, approx 13 mm dia, lubricate the ends and move the transfer lever to and fro, you will see one of these shafts move, the other is spring loaded to disengage 4 wd when going from 4 to 2 wheel drive, it may be necessary to move this with a plastic mallet until it will move freely. It is possible to remove the transfer box with the gearbox in situ, many people do this to reduce the weight when removing the box. It is easier to split them on the bench. If you remove the box change the 2/3 gear bearing bush as a matter of routine, also look closely at the second gear, the small teeth on the side which the first gear locks over to engage 2nd, these wear easily and lead to difficulty with keeping the gear engaged. Copper brake pipes are not very good, vibration plays havoc with them . IMI company make a brake pipe material called Kunifer, this is a copper alloy and it is very good, it does not rust, it does however need to be clipped in place properly. Do not use pure copper. I thought it could be a half shaft (i only wish) but on engaging 4X4 the same noise occurred when I tried engaging gears. The CLUTCH is firm and fine (by all appearances), meaning it is the GEARBOX. QUESTIONS: 1 - Any idea what the PROBLEM is? 2 - What ADVICE do you have if I do it myself? Never looked at gearboxes before. 3 - While it is out how about doing other maintenance /repairs /checks (cos i hear this is a NO FUN JOB - not to be repeated in the WILDS of AFRICA). Any help would be most appreciated. Thanx Barry Sounds like the layshaft bearings have collapsed if you are lucky the layshaft has not broken they however usually are. When you have the box out replace all the bearings and the reverse gear bushes or bearings. Put in a new clutch assembly and thrust bearing. Check all the gears for chips replace if any damaged. Check the springs and dedent parts on second gear engagement hub check the outer gear of the third fouth sincro hob any chips then replace. As long as the layshaft and gears are OK this should not be to costly. The LR box is not that complex after removing the bell housing you have resonable access just keep evrything in order on a bench and reassembly is the reverse of disassembly. Best of luck. There is an additive you can put in the gas that should stabilize it. I don't have any experience with the stuff myself, so I can't recommend anything specific. Check out an auto supply place or maybe an RV supply for what's available. Buy a good car cover.. One that can "breathe". I'm assuming that this will be stored indoors, but even so, after two years it will accumulate a lot of dust, so a cover is a definate must have. You need one that can breathe so that no moisture stays trapped underneath. You probably should disconnect the battery and coat the terminals with grease so they don't oxidize. Probably changing the oil prior to storage is a good idea - just to get rid of the nasty corrosives that accumulate there. If you have a manual transmission, some people recommend using a block to keep the clutch pedal down... keeps the clutch from rusting up. Find a copy of Hemmings Motor News and see if there are any places that specialize in car storage in your area.. What the hey.. if someone else is going to pay for it... Just for price comparisons, I bought two NAPA filters for $6.34 each in Manitoba Canada. I would like to get some idea what our prices are like compared to some of you U.S. locations. I guess with spin ons averaging about $3.90 each, you can figure if the spin on adaptor would really save much. ------------------------------[ <- Message 55 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 950322 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Prices vary all over the place, but the Fram filters used for spin on applications are the basic GM V8 application and there are billions and billions of them out there and priced accordingly. I think the one I use with the adaptor is the PH8A (looks right) and they are often sale priced (the time to buy a year's supply) at the high volume parts places like Grand Auto and Kragen for about $2 to $2.50 US or about $2.85 to $3.60 CDN. NAPA here is more expensive too. I've been told that WIX makes the NAPA oil filters. Several years ago Consumers Reports ran an article on their tests of oil filters. They fell all over themselves praising the Fram filters, and that was just as Fram came out with a more efficient design that was also tested, but not as thoroughly. They liked that one even more. There are those that find fault with Consumer Union's testing methods, but the critics usually seem to have just had their ox gored. Since I'm not an expert in most things that they test, I've found it to be a reasonable proctice to follow their recommendations unless I have reason not to. I had a series of Peugeots that I liked for various perverse reasons, and CU disliked for equally perverse reasons (The French tend to do things in their own way and CU likes uniformity in things like control locations). But at least they made their reasons clear and one could accept or reject their position based on information. I'm sure that they would regard each and every one of us as totally irrational for messing around with our old beasts. In fact, I noticed in the April Car issue that they refer to the Defender as "crude". Let's hear it for really crude! = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Walter C. From: sohearn@InterServ.Com Date: Tue, 21 Mar 95 22:35:35 PST Subject: D110's and LR signs Saw a D110 up at Mammoth Sunday. Just got a brief look as it went the other way. (BTW I wasn't driving so I couldn't flash my lights.) It was white and this brings to mind a question I have: were/are all D110's imported into the US white? I didn't hear anything back on genuine LR signs etc. I know everybody out there probably wouldn't part with one but what if you had two? Maybe for the right price? Dean J.
