If I remember correctly, the old project name for the Range
Rover was "Road Rover" (not to be confused with the
thankfully short-lived cartoon of the same name).
They were definitely aiming upmarket - a utilitiarian
vehicle with a less utilitarian fit, finish and comfort
level.
When last in the UK I had the pleasure of meeting one of
the Velar prototype Range Rovers (YVB163H I believe) and
its owner. The comfort level was definitely better than a
Series landy station wagon of the time, even though you
likely still could have cleaned it out with a garden hose.
It may never have been called a Land-Rover but it was
definitely cut from the same cloth.
Methinks they were making way too myuch stew from that
