Hi All

Well it looks like I need a rear diff. As for the past week or so when ever
I made a turn a LOUD bang came from the rear and It felt like I had slid
into a curb. ( But I had not ) When I pulled the diff out Over the weekend
I found two teeth missing on one of the gears Tried replaceing the gears
with a good one from a bad diff but after It was installed in the LR it
howls a lot.
So anyone out there got a spare diff?
Anyone coming to Chicago or near here from Baltimore who could bring a axle
with them?

Sandy: Sorry to hear about the tragic loss of excellent porter. The lucky
ones who attended the both BRLRC rally this past weekend and the MidAtlantic
the week before gave glowing reviews. I'll have to cross them Blue Ridge
Mtn.s next year myself.
As to beer: BRLRC hosts David and Cheryl Ricthie, who own a beer
distributorship as well as a fantastic collection of Land Rovers (some people
are just sooo blessed) provided a beer trailer with free flowing Bass Ale on
tap at the dinner at the end of the day. A perfect ending for a perfect day!

The event: We had 38 vehicles, mostly Discoveries, some Rangies, but only two
Series (not counting Alan Biggs wonderful hybrid). David Moore in his SIIA
proved that the olduns in capable hands can keep up the the newest. And no
broken axles this time out. We convoyed over public roads that varied from
deep mud, creek crossings, off cambers, holes that swallowed Dave Schworms
LRNA HSE (amoung others) and a long, very steep hill with lots of dry, loose
rocks that was so fun going down that some of us tried it again going up,
which was even scarier! This was my wifes first outing, and she came away
with a new respect for the old money pit (my 83 RR). Meeting so many nice
people and driving your Rover for hours in mud and dust makes al the other
frustrations worthwhile. Cheers. Andy Blackley

My office here in London overlooks the Honourable Artillery Company
and the Lightweights have to be seen to be believed. AFAIK they were
specially made by Rover specifically for the HAC. They certainly put
my battered and unoriginal (but fun - V8 powered) IIa lightweight to
shame.

I'll try and get some pictures next time they're out on parade; if
anyone's interested drop me a line and I'll see what I can do.

Not according to the packaging, my towing service (whose name I won't
mention here--he's in for enough abuse as it is) and the guy at the auto
parts store. Anyhow, I'll keep you posted.

And to complete the update:

1. Gas tank is bolted into place and fully funtional.
2. Disassembled the E-brake, cleaned it, reassembled an readjusted. Works now.
3. Wanted to do the same for the regular brakes. Couldn't loosen at least
one lugnut on each wheel. Bad tire shop...Evil tire shop. I guess the
Aluminium Man would have been a bust had I attempted it. Anyhow, will
locate an impact wrench and reattempt this project next weekend. Also hope
to bolt the hard top in place.
4. Leaky hub (outside, not in) seems to be "fixed". Topped off rear
diff--which means it's leaking at the diff again. I really should get an
intact gasket into place there. (I suppose it'll happen when I next break a
halfshaft!)

Always something to do...

Hello All

Whilst travelling the A11 in Suffolk recently I have been spotting a lot of
the new military spec 110s. Does any one on the list have experience of
these? I am particularly interested in how the spare wheel is attatched to
the side of the canvas and GRP hard top. Does it not restrict the view in the
N/S mirror.

They look quite impressive particularly the rag top versions which appear to
use some sort of plastic coated canvas, but that spare wheel stuck out on the
side does look odd. I am still waiting to see one in a layby where I can stop
and take a closer look.

On Sun, 12 Oct 1997 Nate <NADdMD@aol.com> wrote "If I park with the front
end lower, I leak a lot of gear oil (1/2 pint over night). If I'm parked
level or with the front end slightly up, no leaking."

Nate:

Your transmission clearly needs all it's gaskets replaced. It's not normal
for British transmissions NOT to leak oil. Especially when level. The fact
that it can be made to leak merely by parking on a hill beggars the issue.
This might be a warranty issue. It is difficult to imagine the export
inspectors allowing anything mechanical, which does not leak oil, off of the
rainy isle. You are quite right to be concerned.

If all else fails, you may need to dismantle the offending gearbox and
replace all the gaskets with proper, original equipment, paper, joint
washers; adequately smeared with grease. This should ensure an adequate
leak indicating that all is well.

Sounds like your timing has changed check the condition of the belt( not
the fan belt) best of luck John

Well I comfirmed it wasn't a timing problem when I turned the engine over
by hand to line up the timing marks and heard a resounding clunk!

Backed all the rockers off to make sure a valve wasn't contacting a
piston. didn't help.

Pulled the head and found a bunch of shrapnel packed into the top of the
# 4 piston. Either part of the valve guide/seat broke off or the P/O left
a little gift in the intake manifold.

Sooooooo now i get to pull the motor and replace bearings and pistons.

Matt,
spotted the following address in the classifieds of a year old (Aug
1996) LRO mag,
begin quote"

leafs). More Comfort, less weight, same payload. For more info write to

" end quote
There was some enthusiastic mention of parabolic springs a while back,
and I just happened to spot the ad a week or so back. Thinking I could
be onto a good thing, I tried emailing the address given , but just got
bounced, and attempts at faxing just got a 'no response' message, so I
dont know if this outfit still exist, or have moved or what. I was
planning to try the snail mail address, but so far have had not got
round to it. Let me know if you do get any response.

I understand the parabolic spring design for Land Rovers was originated
by Santana who manufactures Land Rovers in Spain. I saw an article
within the last 6-9 months in one of the LR magazines which said they
had a supplier in the UK who got them from an agent in the Netherlands.

I am considering having a local spring manufacturer build a set of them
for me using the spring rate information in the Land Rover Manual. Let
me know what you find out. If it looks fairly easy to have them made
locally, I will pass on the specs.

All of RTVs whose labels I have read have warned that they do. The only I
time I have ever used it in direct contact with gasoline (on a fuel

you may be okay.

At least they didn't put them on crossthreaded, which a shop did to 70% of
mine once. I now insist that anyone who has wheel off any of my vechiles
use the lug wrench in the vehicle to put the nuts back on with.

Land-Rover maintance seems to fill the time (and budget) available.

Subject: Solex Rebuilds / Alan Richer's Rochesters / Stg 600 Carb Super Replacement

Dear All,

Now that I've slowed the oil outflow from the Sheridan Valdez to a mere =
pint or two per month, the aged Solex has begun to spew forth more gas =
onto the manifolds than into the engine.

To plot my next move, I've run through the archives of past postings on =
the Solex using Bill C's newish Search capability (very handy, Bill!).

Seems a Solex rebuild kit is available cheaply from a Welsh Weber =
dealer. Past comments on Solex - Zenith - Weber single - Weber doubles =
- Rochester didn't show much of a consensus (surprise!).

So, here are my questions...

1. Are the Solex rebuild kits really available?

2. How difficult is rebuilding the Solex?

3. Anyone with strong feelings regarding the rebuilt Solexes advertized =
in LROI and LRW?

4. Calling Alan "Rochester Man" Richer: Does the Chevy Vega Rochester =
bolt on to the existing Solex mounting plate or do you need a different =
adapter?

5. I'd rather save my $ / L for a new frame, but does anyone have an =
informed opinion on the sexy "Automotive Component Remanufacturing's" =
setup featured in the August 97 Practical LRW article "Time Travel?" =
Its got a K&N, SU, new intake manifold, and unleaded head.

Thank you one and all! Regards,

Neil Sheridan

A few months back, LROi had a cut down drawing of the new Defender
"Wolf" XDs. They have a complex roll cage, similar to the NAS D90. The
spare wheel attaches to the side of the roll cage. Some models have a
grp hard top. The ht is not made by LR. I think its made by Pilcher
Green. The XD also has an Xtra Duty chassis, that has Xtra tubular
chassis rails welded in place. Does anyone know what that large grp box
is on the side of the wing? Its in the same place were the heater intake
is for the series vehicles. Is it a pre-filter for the air filter?

I was watching this show on TBS called "Little Warriors," which was
about how Laura Hutton (the model, is that the correct spelling?) lives
with the Masai. Unfortunately they were driving around in old Toyota
LCs. But there was one great shot were all of the Toyotas got stuck in
the mud. Guess what came to rescue them?? A 101 FC easily drove through
the mud and then recovered all 3 of the stuck Toys.

I guess that made up for watching Toyotas for an hour.

I thought all of the 100" prototypes are owned by Dunsfold. Are you
sure they were Real Prototypes and not just custom built?

This question is probably for the coil list, but I'm not a subscriber...
Has anyone installed Famous 4's custom springs? They offer coil springs
with a normal, 1 or 2" lift. I was thinking about getting the 2"
springs, but I want to know how the ride is compared to stock springs.
They are supposed to be 25% stiffer, what ever that means.

David,
not that I consider myself a spring expert, but as a physicist...

It simply means that you need 25% more force to compress them the same
distance as the stock springs.
Stiffer springs will make you able to carry more load without reaching the
bump stops, but unladen, your Landy will tend to lift one foot when going
off road. The ride is much harsher, too (I know what I'm talking about here).
You can find most of the LR spring rates on Jim Allens web page:
http://www.fourwheeler.com/techline/lrover/

hope this helps
