Just back from a weeks vacation and see Mike's toy Land Rover "ad" and
Kevin's response.
Whilst commercial advertising is a no-no (eg I have 50,000 Pairs of size
15 Camel Trophy Boots at $375 a pair) the offering of specials that may
be of interest to subscribers such as the toys or "discard" parts from
Mike is OK. I even like to see Kevin tell us of limited time offers from
LROI that we may miss if we wait for our magazine to arrive. So long as
it doesn't become a regular posting that consumes bandwidth and reading
time. So keep it up Mike, Kevin and all.
Thanks, Trevor

Reports I've read suggest it goes like stink, gives good fuel economy (27-
30 mpg UK gallons) but keeping it cool can be a problem.

Brad,

I'm in the market for some new wheels. Are these original LR wheels or 8 spoke
white ones. what size tires are on these? Have you riddenm your rover with
them? do they rub wheelwells, springs? do you have 88 or 109?

My current wheels are mismatched in width, offset, color, and rustiness, so
thesese may be better candidates for my parents garage.

Please get back to me soon, as my email runs out on the 18th of dec.

Just a quick note on your frame replacement logs.
Excellent work and valuable information. Ever think of submitting
to LRW or LWOI for publication ?

Every time I crawl under my SIII to pump in some more 90wt, I glance
(too look closely would probably prevent me from driving it) at the
flaking frame and know a replacement is in my future.
Your diary will provide a plan of action and hopefully save me some time
and effort when I tackle this project.
Like your web page design, too. Nice pics.

Now that you've moved to New Hampshire I'm sure that you're
much more accustomed to the kind of snow that the DC area got
last winter. I live near DC, in Dayton, MD. and work in Reston,
VA. Believe me, there is nothing i would have liked better than
to be out and about in the snow ('93 RR) but I was forced homebound
by 44" of snow in just over three days. I honestly spent four
days from morning to night on my tractor pushing snow around
for myself and my neighbors. When I ran out of diesel, it took
the better part of four hours to make it two miles to a neighbor's
home (and back) for more.

I will say that I enjoyed every minute of that week. I only made
it into work once (Thursday). Most of all I enjoyed the validation
I got for all of my "toys."

Subject: Wheels

I have a set of four wheels for a Range Rover, which a friend of mine
left in my stable 5 years ago, eventually telling me to keep them. They
are in need of a sandblast and repaint job, but are ok - they seem to be
for wider tires, which would suit me fine for my winter set - the
question is - can I use these on a series III, and with what tyre?

Instead of a large hole in the middle to accomodate the hub centre,
there is a bulge which looks as if it will cover the hub entirely.

anyone any comments on this one?

I happen to like LROi very much and have been a subscriber for about a
year--I can't count on the local Borders Books to have it on a regular

LROi isn't perfect but I was unimpressed with the one issue of LRW I have
seen. I actually find their layout worse than LROi's and in just one issue
saw all of the faults that have been previously mentioned.

For an owner with a non-running Rover, it's how I get my fix. ;-)

They can supply off-the-roll or a complete kit custom cut for your

Pulled up this page, and out of curiousity, looked at how they implemented
their counter. As I suspected they used the Web Counter service that I
used. (I could tell because it showed a broken link instead of a count.)
What caught my eye, though, was the name of the counter: "euro". So I
pulled up the Euro Parts Ltd. page and sure enough, they used the exact same
counter. So when you see 350+ hits to either page, that's the combined
total for both pages. I dunno what the relationship between the two is, but
they use the same counter...

Subject: Wobbly Wheel

Hi all,

Just like to publicly thank Chris Stevens for the help this weekend on the
rover. He stopped by so we could put new shocks on his and ended up fixing
mine as well.

I have noticed some slight pulsations in the brake pedal for a couple of
weeks, but it was intermittent and didn't seem to affect braking. I figured
I'd look into it when I did the swivel balls at Christmas. However, on
Sunday, we planned on replacing the half shafts in the rear and jacked up one
side to avoid having to drain the diff.

Needless to say, the wheel had significant wobble in it. The lug nuts were
all tight, so we went about trouble shooting it. Turns out the hub had
loosened up significantly. After retightening the hub down (on both sides)
and replacing the half axles, it runs well again with no pulsations on
braking. Best of all, the inside oil seal didn't get trashed (no oil on the
inside of the wheel)

Live and learn

Last Friday night, 12-13-96, I stopped for gas on my way home from work and
noticed a dark green D-90 parked at the local Sugarcreek store. It had New
Jersey plates and alot Phish decals on the bumper. I think it is the first
D-90 I have seen in town. I didn't get a chance to talk to the driver but I
figured he was a Phish-head in the area for a concert at Lake Placid. If
you are on the list I would like to say your D-90 was nice looking execpt
for the all decals on the bumper (non LR). I like the color, it is the same
as my 1973 Series III swb.

Did any one on the list recently sell a LR in Texas to an individual in
Massena,NY? My brother-in-law who lives in Houston told me about the sale
and he said it is being shipped to Richmond, Va where he was going to drive
it to Massena for the new owner who is a friend.

"Q3: The stud under
the exhaust pipe nearest the passenger compartment (bulkhead??) is corroded
to the nut; the exhaust pipe curves out into the way of the nut/stud coming

Well, if you're taking the manifold off take all the other fixings off and
you should be able to pull the manifold away from the head -giving you more
clearance to back out the stud some more, or even to rotate the manifold so
as to give you more space behind that stud.

Bill,
You're probably right, but the weight isn't an insurmountable problem.
Advertised weight of the GM v-8 is around 300 kg or 650 lbs, probably 150
to 200 lbs more than the LR diesel. ( and less than the Cummins 4 BT I am
trying to get into my project). Torque figure for the GM is 290 and hp is 160.
obviously too much for standard series drivetrain, but within the range of
the newer petrol Rover v-8's. I think this conversion is intended for
Defender/ Disco/ RR vehicles, though I would guess a Series coiler conversion with
the later drivetrain would be a good candidate, especially since the engine
would be 10 inches to the rear of the RR position over the axle. I'm sure it would be a tricky
proposition but mileage in the upper 20's with power figures like that
sounds interesting, and it's one of the few advertised conversion possibilities
that might be less expensive in the States than in England. I have also
heard that some of the reliabilty problems of the GM diesel have been
solved in the 6.5L version.
I was hoping someone had done this and could say whether it was a great idea or a bad
mistake. Just curious and planning the next one.

Just to clear up any confusion... I can categorically state that I am the editor

Dave Barker is the Secretary of the Yorkshire Rover Owners Club and has

I, Dave White, am the editor of the Yorkshire Rover Owners Club and have

Pam White is the one who's picture appears at the top of the articles that

Ersatz Soubriquet is neither the editor, the secretary or my wife.

I think that about clears it up for the moment :-)

Subject: Re: more.Projection responses..

Jan: I am using a rebuilt Delco 80 Amp. It is a little bigger than the 37 to
60 amp models) I'll get back to you with the model number on the unit.
I was getting 14 mpg or thereabouts with the CD-175s, but I know I was
running fairly rich (as proved by the E-check folks here. You need to get a
pass or a waiver here before you can either renew your plates or sell a
vehicle. :( ). On the freeway it would approach 18 or so at sustained 65
mph.
My early tuning on the Projection was very rich, I was only getting about 9
mpg at best, although I was also lead footin' too. I am now running closed
loop since Saturday so its too soon to tell, but I think it will be much
better.
The Isky cam appears to deliver power at a higher peak than the stock lazy
cam. I think the stock long duration cam peaked at about 2500 rpm, wereas now
it appears to peak at over 3000 rpm. The '81 to 83 RR LT-95 had a slight
overdrive ratio in 4th to match the stock cam and to stretch the mpg that the
factory could report, so now I need to stay in 3rd longer in some situations.
When I install a tach I'll be able to tell better.
The Isky cam is about as docile from idle as the stock was, which is good.
Once the revs get up it comes on much stronger.
Other Projection tips: The fuel pressure is back to the 13 psi recommended by
Holley. I am going to leave a small fuel pressure gauge installed in the
supply line. When pressure drop off it will be a waring to check the filters.
I thought idle was too rich intially so I lowered the pressure. This was not
necessary and it badly hurt part throttle running. With the 13 psi it runs
great. The LED on the O2 box tells you if you are near a 14:1 stoiciometric
(sp?) ideal ratio by flashing. It adjusts the voltage and current feedbacks
to the ECU to keep close to this ratio for all throttle openings below 2/3rd.
I also installed a heater hose adaptor plate on the back on the TBI body. I
had to order this direct from Holey. Cost $10. (I'll post that part #
too)This heats the throttle plate area to avoid icing. We've had some cold,
wet weather here of late and no problems with such. I am using a 14"
Edelbrock air cleaner, which has the greatest available drop below the flange
of the TBI and so gives max clearance. Even still the wing nut as made an
impression on the bonnet insulation (but not the bonnet) and clears the drip
channel on the bulkhead by 1/2 inch. The overall height from the top of the
intake manifold to the top of the air cleaner is about the same a the
distance to the tippity top of the dashpots of the old setup. Cheers. Andy
Blackley.

Subject: Breather "snorkels"

  Hi!

Some weeks ago, when I changed the front diff pinion seal, I
checked the breathers of the diffs, to find that they were both
sealed (the little bb was corroded). I took them out, dissambled
the upper part of the breather, and left it out, so I don't have to
replace the seal so soon again. :-) I've heard that it's a nice
modification to connect the breather vent holes to tubes to act as a
snorkels, so it vents out above. I have some questions about how
this could be done:
   1. What type of tubing should I use ?
   2. Can I run it joined (side by side, touching) to the brake
hydraulic piping (as they also leave the diffs to the frame) ?
   3. Where should they end ?
   4. What should be in the end ? Just the pipe turned down, some
kind of filter ?

    Thanks for the help! Pedro

Hi All,
I would like to clearify that the 3.8 engine I am looking at
engineering into my early 2A is a GM engine out of a Bonniville.
So far it looks good & possible. I am currently considering using an
automatic Trans to soften the impact on the drive train. The 350 GM
trans can be mad to fit & would add alot of strength. I know of Willy's
4X4 with a 350 engine & trans adapter to the transfer case.
If anyone can give me input please do. Presently the engine looks like
it's exhaust goes from the drivers side to the passanger side before
exiting down just behind the engine. I hope this will aviod the
steering box enough to make this an easy conversion.

Rather than all the time fuss and expense in modifying the existing
check valve type breathers use the breathers currently fit to the
Defenders (presumably also the more recent RRs and Discos too). These
are banjo type fittings with a hose preattached that will have (or
can easily be worked into) a U shape at the end to reduce the
risk of water enterying the tube. The tube can be routed in a variety
of ways.

Subject: Surprise in the mail from the ROAV

I was doing fine until the phone rang. It was a friend of mine--you all
know him so we'll just call him 'Towball'-- wanting to know if I'd seen the
ROAV's 'The Gearbox' yet. "Nope, haven't checked the mail, not expecting
any checks until late this week" was my response. "Well there's a cool
picture of your Rover in it!" replied 'Mr. You got it, I'll tow
it--anywhere on Earth'. "Hang on, let me see if it's arrived." Sure
enough, 'The Gearbox' was sitting in the pile of mail accumulated outside
my door, and on page six was a picture of my Rover. Ordinarily, this would
be a cause for celebration, sort of a proud parent thing.

Not this time. This picture looks like something from the cover of
'Really-Big-and-Stupid Tires Monthly' -- front wheels flying off the ground
as the beast crests a hill at excessive, non-tread lightly, speeds. You
know, kind of like the image that all of us who were at the Mid-Atlantic
have of boy racer 'Towball' and his sidekick 'Young, Single and
Conservative' sailing over the tank trap at light speed--having already
received a DQ for excessive speed, wheelspin and downright anti-social
driving. Worse still for me is the caption--"How it's [underlined]not[/U]
done: the last obstacle on the trials course." Captured for my viewing
pleasure by Jim Wolf. A wonderful feeling for someone who prides himself
in driving sanely and smoothly offroad--and most of all for being
non-damaging to his Rover.

Well it's my Rover all right--the PIAA foglights and the roll cage are a
dead giveaway. But to quote John Fogerty, "It ain't me" at the wheel.
Let's all give credit where credit is due though. The driver, following the
advice that I so often spew, that "the best race car in the World is
someone else's", is none other than our own list-meister, Bill Caloccia.

Bill had borrowed my pride and joy for a gentle little spin around the
track. (And somehow managed to mangle the gas cap in the process.) At
least I now know why my bushings have suddenly given up the ghost, and
thanks to Jim Wolf, I know whom to, urr, *bill* for the damage. ;-)

Seriously, another fine effort by Sandy Grice, Jim Wolf, and all of the
photographers who contributed to this issue of 'The Gearbox'. And don't
worry for a moment about my Rover, Bill--if something breaks, I can just
call 'Towball'.

RoverOn!

Ahem, I was disqualified because of an unannounced "shunt" ... OK, I reversed
down about 150 feet of track because of a missed turn. Ten (top?) possible
explanations for the mistake:

1) Naviguesser had no clue where we were going.
2) Naviguesser had eyes closed.
3) Driver had eyes closed
4) Naviguesser was whimpering behind bulkhead with his dog.
5) Driver in same position.
6) Sonic boom.
7) Heated discussion about the airspeed of an unladen swallow.
8) Naviguesser's kilt blew up.
9) Spectator's skirt....
10) (Most likely) Naviguesser finds it physically impossible to say "left"

I could go on, but you get the point....

I spent some time at their booth while at the Billing meet last July.
While there, I picked up a materials sample kit. Most of their materials
are horsehair backed vynal or an indoor outdoor carpeting with maybe an
extra thick padding.

I asked them about materials for repeated dunking. The one that they have
is their most expensive material. It looks like 5/16 inch neopreme with
aluminum foil bonded to each side, shiny side out.

I agree with you 100%. I have had bad experiences with that spray in
foam that comes in a tin, but around here there are companies that spray
airframes etc. It is a rubbery type of foam that isn't hydroscopic and
it doesn't turn to dust when exposed to UV. I think this stuff would
really give me a nice quiet vehicle and more importantly it would keep
the heat in in winter and out in summer. Dave VE4PN

Ron Franklin,

I was told once by a LR chassis engineer that the basic LR
drivetrain (RR, Disco, Defenders) was built for a 300lb-ft load. 290 is
right there but if you also went with an auto box, this would give you back
a nice cushion. As you know, manual trans are much harder on drivetrains.

Rob,

There's a guy in New Jersey whose name escapes me that has done
exactly what you are planning. He also was known for putting 215 Buicks in.
I believe he was physically challenged in som way and need the autobox to
help him enjoy Roverdom more fully. Perhaps this is enough info that
someone will remember this fellow and you can get in touch for details. As
I recall, it was a good setup. Ian Ashcroft (See Adverts in LROI or LRW)
makes an adapter to bolt a GM Turbo 350 auto to the stock 2A transfer case
and the box is plenty strong for a V6.
Good Luck!

Try have a look at

URL: http://www.xs4all.nl/~cdewaard/

It does realy explain about corrosion, but not so
much about how to get it avay.

There is different solutions, Clean the frame, blast it with
sand or metalic grain. Then give it somthing that can seal it.

E.g.
Hot dip in zinc.
Get the paint known as "Light Primer", 2 compoment epoxy for
   sailing boats keels.
Paint it with zincpaint.

All realy good solutions demands that the frame is easy
accessible.

It is always an issue that gives a lot of advise and discusion
in Your local Land Rover Club.

Because of Christmas and Newyear, next meeting is on february the 4.

If You are not a member, call me, on phone +45 43 46 65 96 or
mail here.

No, works only when submitted in water.

Happy Rovering
