BTW, how do you burn the valves? Just really hard driving? The Australian Army had a modification to ALL series III sixes which involved either totally removing the tappet clearance plate on the rocker cover, or scratching out the original Land rover figures and changing them to Inlet .008 and Exhaust .014. The Australian Army Service manuals for both the GS (General Service) and FFR (Fitted For Radio) have also been changed from the original Land Rover figures. My enquiries have revealed that the incidence of burnt out valves dropped markedly after this mod. If you are lucky enough to have an FFR with winch, the only way to do the exhaust valves is to remove the whole passenger side wing and exhaust manifold/pipe assembly so that you can remove the exhaust tappet cover!!!! Its now on(at least I think it still is) in London, but without Michael Flatley, who,due to some argument or other left, and put on his own show called "Lord of the Dance".Riverdance is available here as a video. When we got back, there was a message on the machine from Land Rover Richmond that they had some used Discos on the lot and to come on up, and oh by the way, LRNA has a offer for full maintenance for the first 45.000 miles. Went up to look at the used ones. By the time we would have bought one, it was cheaper to by a new '96 SD with the maintenance plan. So we traded the VW and are now a two Rover family. From: RALPH@SMUGGITS.MHS.CompuServe.COM Date: 23 Oct 96 09:38:44 EDT Subject: Parabolic Springs. As many other leaf sprung land rover owners may have, I am considering putting air springs under my 101. The process, although a major project does not seem too traumatic. I have done some research and am now at the point that I am considering contracting the work, however I have run into one problem. Air spring conversions for trucks use Parabolic springs, which apparently are a different steel that the multi leaf springs we have on our landies. I have been informed that there are only two companies in the UK that produce these and there is virtually no chance that I will be able to find the right size off the shelf. Does anyone know what the properties if these parabolic springs are? What is it about them that is parabolic? If I cant use them, does anyone have any ideas on how to produce a replacement half spring to use as the trailing arm in the suspension. I believe that the minimum order would be 500 springs! Does anyone know where I would be able to get them in smaller quantities (I am doing this project in conjunction with a company that specialises in air spring conversions so there may be the possibility of a small batch order.) From: DONOHUEPE@aol.com Date: Wed, 23 Oct 1996 12:21:34 -0400 Subject: Half Shafts The question was recently posed: WHEN will a half shaft break? The timing of half shaft breakage is strictly controlled by Murphy's Law. Shafts will break when it is the most inconvenient and when you are the least well prepared. Assuming your Land Rover has the original lucas half shafts, your best insurance against their breaking is to have spares (and all the usual gaskets and tools) in the car at all times. The gods of darkness are ever vigilant and they will know when you leave home without spares and tools. I take these matters as an article of faith. Be prepared. In the 20 years of owning my 109, no half shafts have broken. I have replaced twisted half shafts before they broke. Spares and tools are always in the car. It is not just Land Rovers that have suffered from this metallurgical malady. Back in the mid 60's, I replaced 4 or 5 good english steel half shafts in a 948cc Austin Healey Sprite. Must have been the tremendous torque. All broke in the same place; at the point where the splines fit into the differential. This was not uncommon with english cars. A good procedure with a newly acquired Land Rover is to pull and inspect the half shafts. This also provides an excuse to replace gaskets and a few potential oil leaks. Be sure to fill with oil the small reservoir in the hub at the outer end of the shaft. The allen nut in the filler hole is often a chore to move. Oil is cheap. Date: Wed, 23 Oct 1996 11:39:39 -0700 From: jouster@rocket.com (John Ousterhout) Subject: more half-shafts >Also, any clues as to when they might go? My .02c, in partial answer: I had our company metals specialist examine my broken axle parts. He concluded in about 2 seconds that it had experienced an initial excessively high torque, causing a circumferential crack, followed by repeated cycling which propagated the crack the rest of the way through the axle. It broke pulling away from a stop sign. About 3 weeks before, I'd been pulling small but tough tree stumps in low range with the front hubs unlocked, downhill on dry pavement. This meant all the available torque was being routed through the rear axles, rather than (at least having a chance of) being divided between the front and rear. I believe this was when the initial crack started. I replaced both rear axles. A few years later, the next axle broke a few weeks after some serious 4-wheeling in rocky terrain, again pulling away from a stop sign. My conclusions, and advice, would be to check the axles for incipient cracking when you get home after any severe use. A magnetic drain plug would also be a good idea (it keeps the broken chips out of the gears and bearings), as well as carrying spare axles at all times. Reverse lights appear to be in working order (bulbs work anyway), but do not get power when tranny is put in reverse. Found an unconnected (PO I guess) wire that originates in rear green w/ black stripe while doing regular fluid level checks. I've been told to pull out floor panels (a first for me) and check operation of switch on tranny and/or reconnect wire. I also want to add a switch on center switch plate to be able to use reverse lights as work lights. Questions: Any caveats for removing floor? Checking switch operation? Adding the other switch good/bad idea? Is green w/black wire the right one? Any misc. comments welcomed and encouraged. Thanks in advance. -- Herman L. I broke the right (short) side about a month ago, no warning, just let out the clutch at a light and BANG! Afterwords, I heard a slight grinding noise so as soon as possible I removed the broken piece, other axle, and disconnected the drive shaft. This was a NASTY break, bent, twisted, and a HUGE break. Drove in front wheel drive for next 2 weeks until I finally replace it. Only about 2 or 3 weeks later, the other side broke. Exact same (stop light) scenario, this time no noises afterwords so I left everything as it was, locked the front and drove that way for about 2 weeks. With the possibility of going hunting (deer) this weekend, and taking the LR on a 500 or so mile trip, I thought it wise to change the broken half shaft. So I pulled it next to the IIa 88, (temporary parts donor) Jacked up the side to be removed on both LR's (didn't have to drain oil that way... Lazy Bugger move, eh?) and with an air impact, (true Lazy Bugger tool!) managed to yank both out, half shafts out, and slap it all back together in about 15 minutes! (That "blue goo" stuff makes great gaskets!) The break was a nice and clean one, about 1" from the outside end, on the splines, just before the large splined "lip", and I was able to remove the long piece with no problem! In summary... I carefully examined the broken half shaft only weeks before and could see nothing wrong with it. I don't think preventative maint. is appropriate here, other than checking for obvious problems (twisting, etc...). And secondly, if one goes, replace the other at the same time!!! I now have a bit of a cluch problem. I drove it to work today, and on the way home the clutch pedal was going very 'light' every now and again, requiring almost no pressure to depress fully. The clutch seemed to disengage properly most times it did this, but on time the gears were hard to select. I've only had the LR a week, and haven't driven it much since it needs new tyres, but I've driven it about 100km before this with no problem. Today was in peak hour traffic and 29deg celcius, so I think it may be heat related. Any ideas ? I think the clutch slave cylinder seals might be a bit stuffed, and the cylinder expands slightly in the heat, and so the fluid bypasses the seal, so no fluid pressure. Maybe ?? I'll start by bleeding the clutch system, and see what happens. Any suggestions welcome. Doug. PS: I'm planning on getting new tyres, and I've been bugging the au-lro list about tyres.
