Subject: Polarizing dynamos?

Have a Rover product that was acquired with battery incorrectly connected for
positive ground. With battery correctly connected (negative ground), the
charging light stays on. It has been suggested the dynamo (generator) is
"polarized". How do I re-polarize the dynamo? And could such a mis-connection
'cook' the voltage regulator?

Actually when acquired the LR probably had the battery correctly connected
(positive ground) as LR's through SIIA suffix C (mid '67) were built with
positive ground. Try connecting the battery properly (positive ground) and
see what still works. The voltage regulator may or may not be fried.
Converting to negative ground is not difficult but does take more than
switching the battery connections, including repolarizing the generator.
Unless you are fitting a radio or alternator there isn't a need to switch
ground.

While negative ground has been the standard in North America for decades,
many British cars were built with positive ground through the mid-60's. Only
those who mess with old British vehicles are likely to have seen positive
ground, so assuming the battery was incorrectly connected is a simple mistake
to make.

An obvious label (in front of the radiator) stating that a vehicle is
positive ground could help avoid mistakes by "helpers" and future owners.. LR
used a "Caution, Negative Ground Vehicle" label after switching production to
negative ground, presumably expecting confusion and mistakes after the
switch.

Go for maximum smoke and get the power directly off the battery. Most auto
parts places have aftermarket fuse blocks. Mount a fuse block on the
firewall and feed it directly off the battery. Then you can run your
accessories off that - with individual fuses. Your ammeter won't show the
use of any of these accessories, but at the same time, you won't be putting
any extra load on your already toasty wiring!

Subject: LightWeight over heat?

I have just moved on from a 1967 SIIa to a SIII lightweight with a V8
conversion. The problem is that it runs quite hot on the guage. I have checked
the system for the normal problems (leaks blockages etc) but can't find anything
wrong. There is a non standard fan on the rad that works fine but may be it
should be beefed up. I am really after some advice as what *should* be in place
for the cooling system or what I can do to make the engine run cooler. It starts
to move on to the "red" quickly when the car is stationary.

Any help?

My '76 sIII has bonnet mounted washers. I don't know if it's
standard. Sometimes i'm happy with them, sometimes not. when the wind
is in the right direction the will spray the whole windscreen and i
let the fluid sit for 3-4 seconds (when i dare) and them wipe. When
the wind is from a bad direction, most of the fluid will disappear.

All the above only during the periods when the washer is working, of
course.

Second Point for today:

Just got the Ford tractor back from the machine shop. Don't ask...BAD news.
However, it's up and running EXCEPT for the water temp gauge. Tried replacing
the gauge and sending unit to no avail. At that point, I figured it had to be the
power line to the gauge (ground was good). After the proper incantation, I amputated
an appropriate sized piece of wire with connector from the old Rover harness (finally
the rover content) and ran it to the gauge. Voila. It now works. (We've had two
different mechanics look at it with no help over the past two years)

Subject: The Blue Brick's Big Day Out

Hi All,

For those of you who have followed along, the Blue Brick (my 67 88" SIIa) was put back
on the road at the end of April. While BB did do some offroad time at a horse event,
I basically drove local errands, looking for potential problems and letting the karma,
spirits and gremlins settle in. Last evening, I loaded up the family and the dogs (I
don't have a winch yet), and took the blue brick into some relatively serious offroad
stuff. What a champ. Drove BB down into the creek by the house which we have only
tried crossing on horseback and with the 4wd tractor previously. We crept in and
crawled out the other side with all passengers staying dry. Gotta love it. I didn't
even break anything...a bonus!

Prince Charles the 67 88 total restoration made some good progress today.
Finished hooking up the steering and adjusted the play to zero. Finished
hooking up the starter, and the exhaust system. Put in the radiator and
radiator cowling and put in both driveshafts. Took eight hours with some
help. We have a system down now, look for parts for 2 hours the put the
parts in for the next 15 minutes. then remove the parts because we forgot
something despite four separate workmanuals laying around.. If I did this
for a living I would starve. Thank god my two retired helpers are as
organized as I or our 10000 sg ft shop would not be enough. We can
generally narrow down the location of a part to 2000 sg ft. It also helps
having three Land Rovers torn down at the same time/. Seemed like a good
idea at the begining, because as you were waiting on parts to come in for
one you could be working on the other. However by the time the parts come
in for the other you forgot what you ordered and what they were for. It has
gotten to the point at times I was unsure whether God could figure out where
all this mess went, Despite my upmost respect for God. I'll give you 10 to
1 now that God doesn't drive one of these. I believe this digest is a cover

Hi all.
Looking for the fault in the spot light circuit with my new meter, I found that
my voltage is 14v. Can anyone tell me how much variation from 12v is OK?

(The light relay was giving a healthy click, so appeared to be working, there
was no power to the lights. I finally opened up the relay. It hadn't actually
being going click, it must have been more like a squish, creating a layer of
little bodies between the contacts. The lights now work, but I guess I need the

Subject: Enough about smoking already

Look, all, I have no interest in wasting any more bandwidth discussing
cigarettes, but let’s get the record (finally) straight.

First of all, healthcare is NOT free, we all pay for it via our taxes and
insurance premiums.

Second, statistically, it is NON smokers who should pay more for health
insurance because they tend to live longer and statistically use more
insurance dollars than smokers. Look it up for yourselves if you don’t
believe me. I did, so I’d have the FACTS straight.

Third, stop listening to the propoganda of smoker-bashing politically correct
types. Everyone’s vices are evil except the ones YOU share. Have some
tolerance. Remember, smoker-bashing will someday be as distasteful as any
other form of discrimination, because at it's root, that's ALL it is.

Fourth, think carefully about the REAL dangers of smoking, compared to other
vices: Ever see innocent bystanders get gunned down because a “cigarette”
deal went sour? Ever see someone pass out and slide his Rover into a school
bus full of kids because he had too many cigarettes? Ever see the fire
department cut out the bay window of a house to remove a man too fat to get
out the front door because he smoked too many cigarettes? No. You never see
these things because they don’t happen. Drugs, Alcohol, food, all things are
bad unless used in moderation. Learn to be tolerant of the vices of other
people if you expect them to be tolerant of yours.

If you smoke, you accept the dangers therein. Asking RJR to pay for your
healthcare or award you damages because you smoked two packs for thirty years
is as stupid as asking LR for chiroprachtic care because you drove your rover
700 miles down an abandoned railroad track. Same with drinking, doing drugs,
driving J**ps, working on Lucas electrical systems, etc. Your body is
ultimately the only personal property you can REALLY own, and what you do
with it is your business, not anyone elses. It is certainly nobody elses
responsability, not RJR, McDonalds, Guiness, Jameson’s, Timothy Leary’s, nor
anyones but your own. Be responsable for yourself.

Let’s all lighten up and get back to Rovering, O.K.? I want to hear more
about diesel vs gas, not camels vs marlboro

I'm not sure if you meant to post to everyone on the list. In any
event, congratualations. (Is getting a LR similar to adding a new

On the West Coast (Mendo_Recce) List, we just gripe about LR
